Jason White does an incredible job and he doesn't like the spotlight so is the perfect guy to do what he does. I honestly don't really know. But there were sure some songs in which Jeff Matika didn't play guitar and just did background vocals. I think he also did the lead guitar parts during the verses of Boulevard of Broken Dreams on tour.
Gonzalo17
10 hours ago, pacejunkie punk said: It was, but there’s nothing to be done about that. They’re still doing two hour sets. It seems like another no win situation for them. When they do a lot of fan interaction, people complain it slows the show down and they don’t have time for as many tracks when Knowledge, HAR and KFAD take forever for instance. Then they remove them, cram 37 songs into a setlist, playing two albums in full, and people say they’re rushing through the set and there’s no fan participation. Well do you want to hear a lot of songs or do you want more people pulled on stage, Billie lying on the stage ranting and singing covers and ten minutes of Hey-Oh’s Bugs Bunny style? Maybe you want the t-shirt cannon back? Complety agree! 35-36 songs (including JOS and homecming, two complete album played, and not only de "hits") IS much better than crowd "singers" destroyng masterpices and lot of heee ohhhs.

I've seen them so many times and have been listening to Green Day for 20 years now. I was at their show yesterday and will see them several more times over the next days and weeks, simply because I love this band. But honestly, the live shows have gotten worse, shorter, and less interactive since the 21st Century Breakdown tour. It feels like the band is rushing through the set. They are getting older, and I understand that, but that's just my opinion. The 21st Century Breakdown tour was the pinnacle of their live performance. They have gotten shorter, but I wouldn't necessarily say worse though. I was at the Lyon show and when I first read some where that they had played 37 songs I was like "no way! Their show in Venezuela (2010 or 2011 I think) lasted way longer than this and they didn't play that many songs then!" For me it's still hard to believe that they played 37 songs, even after counting them myself. But they did. I got to hear American Idiot in full (literally a dream come true), I had been to 5 Green Day concerts before (1 from the AI tour, 3 from the 21stBD tour and Bataclan last year), and yet at this show I got to hear 15 songs live that I had never heard live before. For me that is pretty monumental. If they have to sacrifice a bunch of hey-ohs and the whole King for a Day act (or whatever else they were doing during the previous tours), in order to be able to deliver that, I'm cool with it. As you say, they are getting older, we cannot expect them to keep the same pace they had 15 - 20 years ago, and of all the things they could sacrifice in order to be able to keep on delivering a good show, I personally feel they sacrificed the right ones. 4

He played extra guitar or did extra backing vocals on most songs, Kevin does the same job now. Jason W is the second guitarist so does more including often doing lead guitar, Jeff/Kevin is mostly just to beef up the sound more. Agree on Jason, love him! In Aaron Cometbus' "In China With Green Day", his account of going along on the Asia leg of the 21st CB tour, he talks about the Jasons and Jeff and mentions Jeff was added to add extra guitar and vocals to make their live sound even bigger. He also mentions that Kevin Preston (Prima Donna was the support band) had been in the running for the job but was judged to not be able to sing quite high enough. I guess in the end they decided his singing was good enough

I remember seeing brutal love live and remember how good both his and Billie’s vocals sounded.

Cris.
7 hours ago, Suicide Commando said: What have you guys thought of the crowd so far on this leg of the European tour? I can only speak for the Lyon show so far, but the crowd was pretty amazing! Not too tough, but definitely very into the show, singing along to every single song, jumping when Billie asked them too, turning on their phone's flash lights when asked, doing the hey-ohs, etc. That said, this is my first concert of this size in Europe, so I don't have a lot to compare to, and I was in the front row, meaning that anyone near to me had queued for hours or paid for VIP, both signaling a high level of commitment. The other thing that I found interesting and loved about the crowd was the wide range of ages, I'm in my 30s, and yet I saw people at least 15 years younger than me as well as people 15 - 20 years older and more. It really says something about the band that they have managed to keep older fans engaged for decades, while still appealing to younger audiences. 1

I expected an absolute shitfest in Lyon, but it was one of the best crowds I've been in. I usually find crowds boring when I've got clear air behind me, but I only did in Lyon because people were too busy dancing, singing, jumping and waving to be aggressive. It didn't matter how old or young someone was (as Cristhyne said, there was an impressive range of ages), what nationality they were, or how long they'd been a fan – we were all united in our love for Green Day and music. The crowdsurfers who came over were doing it for fun. Whenever I looked around, people were smiling and freaking out, even one of the security guards. Obviously, it was just one show and I find it very hard to believe British crowds will ever be that decent, but then French crowds have an even worse reputation and they didn't live up to it, so I'm hopeful other shows will be like that.

Idk, they sound great to me and they’re playing their two most iconic albums at most tour stops in addition to other wonderful old and new songs. I seriously have been loving the setlist most shows so far. The shows are still really long and their energy still seems fantastic. IMO, watching Billie performing sober is a more pleasant experience on every level — you can see him enjoying being in the moment and there are no rants/outbursts that tended to happen on the 21CB tour. And “less interaction” — they’re definitely playing straight through songs more than they used to, but I personally love that. At one point years ago, it seriously felt like they’d stop in the middle of every single song and that’s just not necessary. From what I’ve seen, they’re still engaging with the crowd, but in a way that’s less disruptive of the performances, and as an audience member I definitely appreciate that. 12

They're also specifically playing straight through songs more on this tour because they're playing through two complete albums, 1. to fit all the songs in, 2. because it's more fitting to perform whole albums that way and 3. because as a result of playing a lot of songs they don't usually play they're playing fewer songs that have specific traditional crowd interaction/doing extra stuff moments
Popular Post stories and songs
Yes @Hermione all very good points! And I feel like a lot of us were getting a bit tired of the more interaction-heavy songs anyway, so I really appreciate the changes they’ve made to the setlist this time both for squeezing more songs in and to freshen things up.
Popular Post Marki.
^ These are all great points, the next tour that's not specifically an anniversary tour might look a little different again. Or it might not, but the most important thing to me is that they seem to enjoy playing these shows so much and have lots of energy & want to play 2,5 hour shows still. Though I have to say I wish Billie would talk a little bit more haha, I do miss that.

I love the interaction stuff and never get sick of it. I would legitimately choose extended KFAD/Shout over Dookie in full at these shows (since I already saw Dookie in full in 2013, if I hadn't I wouldn't as I'm not that crazy) . But I understand it must be sacrificed for playing two albums in full and it's worth the trade off. Plus like you said Billie always finds ways to engage with the crowd anyway, doesn't really matter either way as he's such a master of connecting with the crowd you feel engaged with him every moment of any show!

I was also just hesitant to bother him because i feel like they’re happy for every moment they’re NOT approached by people lol ah it would have been perfect though, we were in the same shop (i was next to/behind him at the register) and when i was done i exited past him and stood in front of the shop to shelter from the rain… then he came and stood next to me for several minutes 😄
