New album - Saviors - Out January 19th

Sadly we know 5 songs out of the first 6 on the album. But Bobby Sox, Goodnight Adeline and ALL THE FUCKING SIDE B is gonna be so fucking great to hear for the first time.

1981 with the unenviable task of following dillemma - I wonder how awkward that scene change will feel in context

I think Green Day made a great move hiring the Baxleys for their videos this cycle. All of the videos have had a really clear artistic vision and were very well executed. They each told a story of the song that helped elevate it. As art, they complement the songs in the way that videos should at their best.

By contrast, the FOAM videos were a mess. The scrapped FOAM video led to a boring performance shoot with B roll that did nothing for the song. Oh Yeah was okay, but it didn’t help me to understand what the song was about very much, and FRA was basically hockey promo. Without one directing team behind all the videos, the results lacked cohesion.  What we’re seeing now is something completely different, similar to the way Sam Bayer made a great collection of videos for AI that all went together.

Hats off to Alice and Ryan Baxley and welcome to the Green Day fam!

I’m really excited for this album because it has gotten practically my whole family hooked. My sisters and I are big Green Day fans, and we have loved all the singles so far. My dad also likes Green Day, but he has mainly stuck with the older stuff and hasn’t listened to much past AI.

However, he first heard LMNB in that Taco Bell commercial and he absolutely loved it, and now even he is looking forward to the album. Never thought I’d see him excited about new music

They shot a video Billie talked a little about before the iheart show, describing it as total chaos. It got scrapped after a rough cut. It was directed by Sam Bayer and we saw posts from some extras and designers involved at the time but never saw the finished product. Then they threw together a boring video and rushed it out. Shame really, I hope it leaks someday. The person I spoke to in the industry that saw it really praised it as bold and interesting. Not sure why they had second thoughts.

I'm curious if the video of the next single will be in full color and the transition from black/white to pink to color in the Dilemma video was sort of the transition from black/white to color of alle the videos for this album 🤔

Was there not something from someone involved saying what a brave, radical video it was and he was very proud of them making it and disappointed they had scraped it?  I think we came to the conclusion at the time that management had thought it had gone too far in some way. I think bits of the original ended up in the version we got.

I don’t think anything ended up in the version we got. They shot the performance in a different location and then cut in stock footage. I suspect based on the bits we did see (punked up actors and dogs, some BTS images of the band sitting at a table with a pile of “cocaine”) that it was reminiscent of the Oh Love video, glorifying the rock and roll lifestyle and not a cautionary tale at all. Maybe on final review it was not what they wanted to portray

And I think consistency is key. If you look at their best records most music videos were directed by the same guy. I think most of the 90s ones were the same dude right? You see consistency across dookie to some of warning atleast.

AI had Sam who also did BIAB and I loved that he linked clips of that into the JOS music video. 
 

I guess somewhere around the trilogy the focus on consistency fell off. Maybe the deals fell through because timelines were shifted? But then that became Rev Rad and Foamf.. we do know the band was also trying to get out of their contract going back to post 21cb. I know we argue about this a lot but I think it’s clear their unhappiness with their deals took their hearts out of it for a while.

Wirh Saviors I see a return to focus across the entire product. From the songs itself to the music videos. Now let’s see how they approach the shows. I assume the shows will change. This album has been received positively so they’ll incorporate it into their show. For a band in their 50s that is the measure of success. Not being a picture on a magazine or being in the top 40.

I think they intended to have Sam Bayer shoot all their trilogy videos too. He did Oh Love and Kill the DJ. Then Billie’s rehab prevented any more videos being made with the band and you ended up with ones like Stray Heart and X Kid that they weren’t in at all. 

Dilemma is my favorite since Back in the USA because I like videos that tell a story.

It's really funny how Dilemma is placed between One Eyed Bastard and 1981. The change of tone from the three songs will make an interesting listening experience. Kinda like how Still Breathing is placed betweeen Bouncing Off the Walls and Youngblood in RevRad

Yeah and Sam is extremely focused and strapped for time. He isn’t going to put up with waiting around and dealing with bs like that. As someone moving on up in the world and working with presidents and clevel execs I can understand that. If you aren’t moving us forward you get left behind.

One Eyed Bastard is at least similarly heavy sound-wise to Dilemma, but the placement of 1981 after it is a bit puzzling.

Ditto but my only complaint is where's Mike on backing harmonies? I think it would've took the song to the next level that's been the only thing lacking from saviors not enough backing harmonies from the other guys

Is this an outlandish Dude take, or is this pretty much consensus?   Man, I've heard only positive things about Saviors until I clicked on the iTunes reviews.   Some real haters on there  - washed up has beens, boring, same as foam (which I would have read as a compliment but it was a 1 star)....right now sitting at 3.5 stars out of 5 even though it's not out yet.   Which proves people ARE idiot and will hate Green Day music before it's even released.  Well, I love it before release so woo-hoo!

It’s all about vinyl releases, YouTube videos and commercials between porn videos now.

Hemispheres by Rush only has 4 songs so you’d be judging 75% of the album with 3 songs!

We haven’t heard the studio album versions for OEB and 1981. Not entirely sure how 1981 starts off or if theres some type outro added to OEB etc.
