New Song 1981

A release in december could be a difficult decision promotional. But if they‘ll announce their tour in january/february people have less money than in december because of christmas 😂

So yeah, for a better charts performance probably better at the beginning of the year but ticket sales would make sense in november/december as a present from your besties or something 😂 Who knows, I‘m just excited and take it whenever they start selling tickets or pre order

Billie (perhaps deliberately) didn’t even say it was a new song. Casual fans probably just assumed it was another deep track they didn’t know and forgot about it quickly thereafter.  This is not meant for promotion. I think they just wanted to give something to the uberfans that would recognize it as new and also (possibly mainly) to try it out and see how it sounded live.

They would have to say something soon. The radio stations are talking about it

Didn’t MCR release Foundations of Decay around that time last year?

Foundations of Decay was released in May last year. Wow, I remember how stoked I was that they could release a new album anytime soon. Well ... 😅

Robbie Williams uses teleprompters on stage for many years. That would be a good possibility. They look like stage monitors with a display on it and can be placed everywhere on the stage

That's what Ozzy does, too.

Having sat with the song & footage from the festival for a day or so, i'm really not getting the hype. The song is bang average, at best. I don't like saying that because these guys are my favourite band. Hoping that the studio version is way better, but the chorus is just so middle of the road.

RevRad was such a fantastic album & on that tour, Billie sounded at his best and the band were phenomenal. I don't know if the FOAM era has pushed his vocals to places they should never have been pushed to & now were seeing and hearing the aftermath of that in his live performances as of recent. It's a shame because he's always been renowned for being a great singer & Green Day one of the best live bands, ever.

I wish I loved the song but i just don't.

All being said, those little 8 second clips that leaked a couple weeks back sounded great. One Eyed Bastard was awful though (I know that was a foam b-side)

It's quite the opposite actually, clips were FOAM outtakes and One Eyes Bastard was recorded later.

Finally listened to it the whole way through, and yeah it is just very average. Could be a catchy little bop, but nothing more. It does have the classic GD sound which is nice. Wish it wasn't so repetitive. Don't really have any thoughts on it further than that. Probably won't listen to it again until it gets released properly.

There are so many things that rhyme with 1981, it seems like Billie could have come up with something else.    I'm hopeful that Billie simply wasn't well rehearsed on every verse, and they weren't stated clear at the concert.    Let's try out some better lines for the chorus!

She's gonna bang her head like 1981

The clouds are raining, she's got glasses for the sun

Pain shooting through the barrel of her gun

She's gonna bang her head like 1981

or

She hurts so bad sometimes she feels numb

okay, that's enough.

I know genius lyrics isn't at all correct.   But it's still cool to see a very generic album cover and the two songs listed over there.    And if you click on 1981, it says "this song is expected to be released in 2023".

Here's a question:   Was there anyone in the crowd that night that knew every word?    Also, GDC Insiders - had you guys heard this one before?

Essentially, 1981 is the year before it all began for Green Day.    1982 would be the year Billie's father passed, Billie met Michael Pritchard.    Billie would get Blue around this same time......  we could be looking at those stories through a rock opera perspective or even just standard song perspective.   An actual prequel to American Idiot that is in some ways, MORE emotional than that record.

I'm digging deep into his guitar lesson days with George Cole, wow.   Blue was purchased from David Margen of Santana!        If Green Day's next album is about Billie birth all the way up to his struggles in the American Idiot narrative....

WOW.

It was the quietest moment of the show. Nobody understood what the hell was going on.

The applause after the song sounded pretty loud to me on stream. How loud was it in person?

It’s because GD are normally such a tight band but the new song was really… tightn’t

During FOAM, I listened to all the artists Billie mentioned as an influence.     I guess now I have to listen to every 1972 and 1981 album ever.     I don't need sleep.

For now, check out the top hits:

But Billie said 1972 is dead

I think the studio version of this song will slightly be different than the live version. 1981 is more in the vein of Back in the USA, Too Much Too Soon, 99 Revolutions... If it will be the lead single of the new album, I agree that it's too straight forward than an anthem type of song. Nevertheless, its the familiar Green Day sound we all know, so I enjoy it.

I'm still going to listen to ever 1972 song ever.  But I guess I could start with 81 albums.
