New Song 1981

Not had the chance to listen to it in full yet but I heard some clips on Facebook and I agree it seems very basic. Just standard GD, nothing special. At least it's something new though I guess.

I'm also intrigued by the 1972/1981 years theme. I don't think it means anything or that theres going to be a theme but maybe there was at some point or 1972 became 1981 or something. Interesting

MTV was launched in 1981, I think it’s quite clear the song is about a girl seeing a music video for the first time and how it changed her life.

I really like that! Are we getting back to lyrics that mean something lol

Did you at least watch the stream on Facebook last night?

I couldn't, I was busy. Hence why I couldn't be there. :P

If there’s a music video for this song, I would love to see them do it in a low quality cable TV 1981 MTV style

What if 1981 is the name of the album and the guitar tech means album in Fall??

Not the best job on the vocals but otherwise okay? It’s repetitive and I can’t say I’m impressed but the performance didn’t feel as confident as I’d expect from them so I believe there’s space to grow

I don’t think this is single material (I hope anyway bc if this is the lead single, what’s the filler going to sound like?)

Well the lead singles were never the best songs on Green Day albums, so don't worry 😄

trilogy was the best work of green day beside the concept albums... but they are on the same bar  but just like in an other genre, where one genre is concept and own is each song on there own

Also like… they need to figure out a way Billie can read lyrics that’s easy and comfortable. It’s difficult to look down on a piece of paper and sing. He could pull it off for RocknRoll All Night, but the whole thing with someone bringing a sheet music stand on stage also seems like both an unnecessary hassle and spectacle. Just put up a bunch of screens onstage, keep them there just in case. Seems like an easy solution.

Robbie Williams uses teleprompters on stage for many years. That would be a good possibility. They look like stage monitors with a display on it and can be placed everywhere on the stage

They should make it look retro, like a 1981 music video.   Have the guys in their best 80s gear.

I don't think he forgot lyrics, sounds like he was losing his voice to me

I don't think he forgot lyrics too. Why would he forget something in the chorus when it's literally the same phrase over and over again

Not very many headlines about this anywhere.   I guess an actual studio version would cause a much bigger stir, because aside from us...nobody is talking about this. Lol

Pros, its a fucking banger with what sounds like kerplunk and the trilogy had a baby. Its good to hear Green day going back to their roots.

Cons, This performance is terrible. Billie Joe sounds like he has a pole shoved up his ass and possibly has a throat infection with his rasp. He seems to forget the lyrics half way through and it makes me pray to god that the album version does not sound like this. He seemed at times to almost mutter the lyrics and its honestly kinda painful. I hope with time Billie will be able to perfect the vocal style he's trying to achieve with this song because it does have potential to be good. But that leads to another problem. Much like "Here comes the shock" it is WAYYYY to repetitive. The lyrics are nonsensical and hard to follow. It really makes me wish that Bille would go back to the style of telling some sort of story with his songs instead just songs about girls thrashing their heads to MTV. Honestly I would love to hear a continuation of the story of Saint Jimmy, like some sort of son or someone who's trying to follow his legacy. The whole reason I fell in love with Green Day is because I felt like I could relate to him, his songs had a sense of depth. Especially in American Idiot, 21 century break down, and Revolution Radio. This new popper punk style which Billie seems to have become obsessed with is just not something I can relate to personally. Well some of them are fun, I really miss the days of Billie telling stories like "Jesus Of Suburbia".  I guess what I'm saying is Billie needs to do a better Job at paying homage to the great albums of the past, making as dance, and making us deeply feel the emotions that I know Billie is able to make us feel. And for me personally, "1981" just doesn't do any of that.

There is no denying that Billie is a phenomenal writer and a hell of a singer and performer. Everything he wrote has been a banger. Even foam had great songs like graffitia and fun songs like take the money and crawl. But the thing that really made Green day special is you could relate. The thing is he is in his 50's and it is difficult to get creative at that age. I still think the album will have outstanding songs but will never reach the level of earlier masterpieces

I've only listened to the song in full once. Cause as soon as I heard it, I was like "This recording is shit quality. I want to hear the studio version of the song". I literally just can't have an opinion on if this song is decent or not until I actually hear the final version". The lyrics on genius just seems like random shite that doesn't mean anything but the lyrics are probably largely incorrect because of how low quality the recording is. Or I'm just not getting the lyrics. What does the chorus "She's gonna bang her head like 1981" even mean?

It's not really incorrect tho. That's kind of what I've heard too so the lyrics on Genius make sense.

I guess there’s different ways to interpret them as always, but the most explicit meaning that is there is IMHO quite clearly the launch of MTV in 1981 on cable Tv and the impact it had on the kids of that time. Some of that is probably incorrect, but even like this they seem to me as some of the most descriptive and clear lyrics a GD song had in a while.
