Artists are pushing "genre fluidity" not just to allow experiments and artistry but because it's easy for their writing teams to continually use generic progressions and scratch the surface of multiple genres than to try and actually stay fresh and write stylistically for such artist. To explain further MGK is a perfect example of the master of none syndrome I've referred to here. Green Day from a radio perspective in 2022 would solely be considered Alternative and as of late even considered Classic Rock or "New Classic Rock". Most of their airplay now are on those channels. In the 2000s they could easily be slotted into pop rock with select singles falling into soft rock or ez rock rotations. As for a sub-genre debate they're punk. You could break it down further from there and say pop-punk as they've incorporated elements of pop rock and classic rock into their sound over the years. But the whole "are they punk?" debate is a waste of discussion imo. Listen to The Ramones then listen to Green Day prior to 2000. Green Day is an AMERICAN ROCK BAND. They are a rock band that uses elements from Punk Rock, Pop Punk, Alternative Rock, Skate Punk and Power Pop. And Garage Rock. And Garage Punk. And Arena Rock. And Folk Punk. So there you have it.
