I see and view their older stuff as being punk rock more than anything they released over the past 10-15 years or so stopping around american idiot and then warning had more of a “pop” punk sound, but I guess it’ll depend on how you also view it, everyone has a different opinion

They're a Pop Rock/Punk Punk band and this much is obvious if you've studied their sound and moved a few words around in the question.

I'd call them punk rock but they aren't strictly punk rock. Certainly punk rock based, but not exclusively.
Pop punk to me is stuff like Simple Plan, blink 182, New Found Glory, etc.

Their various side projects make them virtually unclassifiable.  PG, Carry the Banner for eg, is in yer face hard core punk, outstanding. From FH on to the brilliance of The Network. Maybe a hard core punk, pop-punk, garage, rock and roll, techno-new wave band.😜

The term pop punk is a little too open about it being the commercialized, easier to listen to version of punk so I can see why he wouldn’t like it. It’s spot on though.

i would consider bands like neck deep or (some) blink lp's pop-punk

but i dont know how you can describe greenday as pop-punk, they are much closer to punkrock than pop-punk

It all depends on your definition of pop punk. Some considers pop punk any form of mainstream punk rock emerged from the 90’s punk rock revival. In this case Green Day definitely belongs here. Others use pop punk to define those 00’s bands born from the commercial success of 90’s punk rock bands, usually having an even more polished and accessible sound. In this case Green Day sits in a different bucket.
There is a clear generational, musical and stylistic difference between Green Day and bands such as Sum 41 or Simple Plan, so if we really need to use labels, I think it’s fair to have different labels for them.

That said Green Day developed a quite unique sound during the year (remember how easily a certain bunch of kids which rhymes with land trolled us by replicating it?), and in the last 15 years got heavily influenced by other genres, mainly power pop. So hard to answer.

They're Green Day and I love them for who they are and what they have given us and that's what matters. I couldn't care less what specific genre box people want to put them in.

Actually, that's just an opinion.

I've always considered them to be punk rock. I think the term pop punk is better reserved for bands like All Time Low, We The Kings, Simple Plan, Good Charlotte and Plain White Ts.
All of these bands have a much more "approachable" or "friendly" sound than bands like Green Day.

Yes, there's some pop punk influence in their overall sound, just like there's also power pop and garage rock but I think they've always had more in common when it comes to their attitude and sound with other punk rock bands, rather than pop punk bands.

Coincidently I am listening to "Blitzkrieg Bop" by The Ramones as I read this.

So....there is no difference.    As much as Punk rallies against the system, it's part of said system.    I believe it was a man called Billie Joe who said that "everybody wears a uniform".

It's not punk rock to be punk rock.
