I know we have the constant barrage of GDFan proclaiming it but I actually have a good feeling about September...

Mostly just really want to see another tour where they're actually playing new material, as much as London Hella Mega was an incredible show I was a little disappointed to not hear a single new song over the last time I saw them in 2010...

The new songs will need to fit into the live show, that's something that they haven't done well since the trilogy.

21cb and the trilogy had loads of songs that could fit into their setlist seamlessly. Rev Rad had a few. Foam had none.

What's great is their set is somewhat diverse between their newer classic rock sound and their old punk sound. I'd love to see them add 5 new songs to their set that has that newer sound, older sound and something in between.

It would be nice to see those 21cb and Trilogy songs added into the setlist too. The trilogy gets no love on the setlist at all.

But the question is, if 4 or 5 1972 songs get added to the setlist permanently, what do they cut?

I'm not entirely sure if it would be permanently but atleast for that album's tour run they should be able to play 5 songs from the album. If they can't they should re-think releasing this imo.

If I remember correctly Hella Mega tour's setlist is actually shorter than the normal GD concert. Don't think they would need to cut anything.

What if any of the songs become Dookie-level or American Idiot-level smash hits? Yeah I think their Hella Mega sets were like 1 hour and 30 minutes. I think their normal sets were always like 2 hours, correct me if I’m wrong

I'm willing to put $100,000 on that they wont. But out of curiosity what is the quantifiable target? Are we talking RIAA certification or chart position?

The guys themselves are even comparing it to American Idiot. Notice how Billie says, "It's got dynamics to it, y'know what I mean? And it stays interesting, in the same way like a song like Letterbomb is interesting!"

My comment was supposed to be sarcastic 😅

A Dookie/AI level hit would probably be one that nowadays would hit 100 million streams on spotify in the first couple months and make it to the top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100. The odds of that happening for Green Day are essentially zero. Since 21 Guns, the only track to make the Hot 100 was Oh Love which peaked at 97 while Bang Bang reached no. 4 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart (meaning it hit no. 104). Their most streamed songs of the 2010's are Still Breathing and Bang Bang which are on 92 million and 77 million respectively. A Dookie/AI level single would need to be far more successful than these two.

When it comes to a new album, the only real commercial success to be expected is the album debuting in the top 5 on the Billboard 200 and a couple singles reaching no. 1 on the rock charts but hitting the mainstream charts? Very unlikely. Revolution Radio debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200, FOAMF at no. 4. I think the new album could debut at no. 1 if there's enough excitement for it, I think a more AI sounding album is more likely to do so than an album that sounds more like FOAMF

I think when it comes to Green Day charting positions, they get a lot of airplay on the radio but they don't get streamed or sold enough to actually chart on the mainstream charts like the Hot 100. The only way I can see them having a huge single is if they collaborate with a more mainstream artist.

Or hit on some weird novelty cover like Africa that becomes a TikTok sensation

How well did “The Saints Are Coming” do in the charts? Especially since they collaborated with U2

It hit 51 on the Hot 100 in the US. In the UK it hit no. 2 and in other countries it hit no. 1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Saints_Are_Coming#Charts

Green Day were still at their commercial peak during this time as it was in 2006, just 2 years after American Idiot but the fact that it's a non-album single means that not that many people stream it today as it sits at 21 million plays on spotify (25 million plays if you include the live version)

If they cut out KFAD that will free up a good half hour or so

Cut the "Hey-Ohs" and you could fit the whole trilogy

How about Rock n Roll All Night, which is good but it’s just a cover

Good chance Pollyanna doesn't make the cut either. There are some Superhits I wouldn't hate seeing them retire as well (WICA, Brain Stew) but the odds of that seem low.

Absolutely, though it's more for the casual fan than anyone else.

I've got an idea!

If we stop speculating and actually talk about the reality of the record, then maybe the record will become reality SOONER.

This is my theory of reality.

This album is a lot like the sequel to Breath of the Wild in that I need more news about it.
