Green Day Sues Bootleggers Selling Counterfeit Merch

I realize that Citi Field is an easy target for bootleggers to sell merch, but this happens outside at all the concerts. I don’t really get why they’re targeting NYC specifically.

Yea seems like a waste of time and money - I honestly love getting bootleg shirts at the end of a show - I always try to haggle and get a little memento with the date on it for like $10 opposed to $40/45.

Any chance this is more of a management thing?

I’m sure it’s a management and Warner merchandise thing, but for simplicity and clickbait sake media outlets will just report that “Green Day are suing…”

Oh, it's 100% management. The band members themselves are way too busy to be involved in some kind of petty legal thing like this and probably don't even care. Warner is just protecting its property.

I usually don't have any qualms against bootleg merch. I've been there when I didn't have 40 bucks for a shirt, but could afford a 10 dollar one from a bootlegger. At the same time, I get that Warner is protecting the brand, so I don't know if I can really blame them.

I mean, Warner is pretty anal about their brand, though I can see the concern about poor quality/unethically produced merch. Still, I agree with others that this is a management thing, not a band thing.

Anyway, what is all this stuff about $40-$50 shirts? I bought both my shirts from Hot Topic for about $20 each, and they are officially licensed merch. Do they just gouge people at the concerts?

Yes. Concerts shirts are notoriously expensive. I paid about $40 for a shirt the last time I went to a GD show.

I believe that is what I paid for my RevRad shirt. It’s more of a “memory” thing for me. I still have the AI shirt I bought “from hot topic” when I saw them on that tour. I don’t wear them. I’m hoping to get a tshirt quilt made one day of all my concert ts.

It's very possible this has happened multiple times before throughout the years and it just hasn't been talked about or news worthy. But what do I know? I don't really care about that type of thing.

Lawsuits are public record if this happened in the mid 90’s early 00’s during Green Day’s height you don’t think ANY news source wouldn’t have reported on it?

Sure, probably. I don't know. Like I said, I don't really pay attention to that sort of thing.

From my experience, lawsuits like that are a management thing 99% of the time, especially with big  “brands” like Green Day

No one really expect to collect anything from the bootleggers, and it’s most likely will be settled without actually going to court, unless Warner really lost their minds

This is more a Crush thing than Warner labels don't really care about the merchandise part (except if the band is on a 360 deal in which case the label sees money from sales from everything but GD is too big (and too smart) to be on a 360 deal...) except for the audio/video stuff now bootleg cds or dvd's labels care about those and more active catching them t shirts and other merchandise labels don't get a cut so they don't really concern themselves with that's up to the band and band management to handle

Yeah you are right, it’s more likely a Crush thing that a Warner thing. I still don’t think the band  has something to do with this personally

I just wanna know how much do they think these bootleg shirts are making... the cost of the lawyers alone gotta be more than what the bootleggers are getting

Warner’s name is on their merch store, when you buy merch you’re ordering from Warner. I’ve also seen the boxes the shirts come in at shows they have the Warner logo on them. Warner definitely is involved in the sales of all their merch, why wouldn’t they be the ones enforcing their claim of copyright?

Well if their merchandise is owned by Warner then Green Day are seriously fucking idiots

Hmm serious question - why would they be idiots?

merchandising is very tedious. I’m sure Warner just comes up with designs/products and then Green Day just has to approve it.  They don’t have time to do that themselves so they let Warner handle it and so Warner gets a cut of the money. A win win for everyone,

True! It's not just GD. A lot of shirts are so poorly made now. And I definitely have some $40 tour shirts that aren't the best quality.

Me too. I was just saying to my friend the other day a t-shirt from Warning or AI era they're really thick and good quality but the more recent ones are thin and out of shape after a couple of washes
