Make Green Day Great Again

"Pollyanna" may just be the best Green Day album since 21st Century Breakdown.

Through these past few years, the music's been pretty mediocre.

Despite mediocre lyrics. it brings back some solid GD vibes. Could this be an indication of things to come?

Let's hope so.

Yes, indeed! Oh! The very greatness that is due...! Oh how the dials on the amplifiers have turned. And now we're all gonna get blasted with such  a sonic vehemence the likes of which god has never seen.

Green Way even adapted the mantra from Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad and customized it to fit their California lifestyle:

"In the Digital Domain, Evil Doers may appear

Trouble starts Brewing, A super hero will appear

Super Human Green Day!

! -Guitar -

Super Human Green Day !

Their gonna amp it up, Kick some Giga butt

Their gonna rip it up, Our hero always makes the cut!

Super Human Green Day !

-Guitar-

Super Human Green Day!"

We don't know if a new album is coming any time soon, whether that song will be on it or whether that song is indicative of the sound of the album

If it is on the album and indicative of the sound of the album, I don't think it'll be the best since 21CB. It might be the best since RevRad but even that I'm unsure of. Pollyanna only beats out around half of FOAMF imo and if that's the first of the songs from the new album that we're gonna hear, then I'm not gonna be too hyped for their next album. Pollyanna would've been one of the weaker songs on the trilogy or on RevRad, and it doesn't compare to any of the 21CB tracks imo (Yeah people have issues with a couple of tracks but I love all of them)

Also, if Pollyanna is on the album, then there's a good chance HCTS will be on the album. If that's the case, then yeah. I'm not gonna be expecting any better than FOAMF

I also find it funny that they released a song like this given that Billie said this during the FOAMF promotion: "Rock and roll sometimes has become so tame because a lot of rock acts are always trying to look for the feel-good song of the year or something" and this song kind of seems like that

How can you compare this lazy uninteresting song to the beast like 21st CB? It's literally not even remotely similar in anything and I'm confused why so many people here think that. If I had to pick the best album since 21st CB I'd choose Love is for Losers or Money Money 2020 Pt II. They're not GD albums but since Billie and GD made them I consider them Green Day material.

I didn't even think to include side bands. In that case, MMptII is probably up there with the best of GD albums. Maybe not Dookie/AI level, but maybe around Kerplunk/Insomniac level.

Agreed. Polyanna is okay, but I have rather low expectations for the next album, if P. and especially HCTS are regarded as the better tracks.

I think stuff he says during interviews can only be taken as his opinion/feelings at the time, not neccessarily as a statement that applies permanently... I mean, he's say anything that comes to his mind :P

Well, you can't make a band "great" if they are already. If you don't like it, is ok. It doesn't mean the end of the world for them if they loose a fan or two.

I'll defend BJ when he said about the "tame rock stuff" that there wasn't a huge pandemic issue that break a lot of people in more than in a way. Pollyanna is a cute tune but it's message is reinforced by the current state of things. Even if the USA is gonna be "normal" soon if there is not a virus backlash, in other parts of the world the future is not that certain. So that's the main difference with "tame rock songs" and "tame Green Day rock songs"

Well, if I have the choice between „Green Day makes overwhelming music that is so hard to make and it fucks them up mentally so they fall into addiction“ and „Green Day makes the music they just want to make so that they are mentally stable“, I would choose option 2. But I think that RevRad was a nice compromise between the two.

Definitely want the band to be happy.

I believe my Power Popera idea is the best option.  American Genius will tell the ongoing life story of Billie as he and his friends make the world a better place and chew bubble gum.

Everything is going to be alright.

Not just in the end like those debbie downers in Weezer say.

But all the time.

Honestly, Polyanna is like a breath of fresh air after two releases of generally pretty dark songs

You mean after 13+ releases of pretty dark songs. :)

Green Day change it up on every album, and each time there are new fans and old haters and vice versa.

And yes, it's nice to hear.  I hope Billie really IS this optimistic.

My thoughts on it is that it's just more generic rock. I just find your standard rock to be boring in most cases and kinda empty. They've just been moving to that style more whether you like it or not. Personally I felt they transitioned completely to that with 21CB with AI coming close to being it at times. (yes yes hating on popular albums but I still wouldn't like it if it wasnt yadada)

Even if a band reaches great heights usually there was a time when they were just ok or even bad. We live in a society where if a band puts out something average or kinda bad everyone suddenly hates them now. It didn’t always used to be this way. Art can affected by many things. Life changes, problems, etc. We shouldn’t expect anything really good anymore. Are they still capable? Absolutely. May just be at a point where it may take longer to come up with something better. Usually by this time in band’s career, you’re seeing 7-10 years or longer between releases. And I’d be ok with that personally. I still like almost everything they’ve released but ever since AI/21CB we’ve seen fewer and fewer good songs with every album. They shouldn’t feel pressure to put out a great album though if it becomes too stressful. I’m ok with side projects being more interesting. I appreciate those a lot. I don’t really care how commercially viable something is. About half of rev rad was really good even if they didn’t have the same commercial viability. Maybe it’s better that way. Green day is more about the magic of the 90’s, early 2000’s. That’s probably why rev rad doesn’t work quite as well as dookie or american idiot or even 21CB. There just wasn’t the same social and musical landscape

I am extremely confused as to the exact nature and purpose of this discussion LOL.

I guess people of GDA want to have an actual say in what Green Day do.

I just want them to drastically change their hairstyles, frequently.

The music stuff is good how it is.

I am so happy that I am not as cynical as some of the people that think GD get worse with every release. All opinions are valid and subjective, I'm just happy that I am objectively able to enjoy what they have been up to since 21stCBD, based on the subjective quality of music. I have only one other bands that I feel have gotten more boring with time, and I wish that was not the case, so I'm happy to be able to continue enjoying new stuff.

There was not much point to my post, I guess, I'm really just celebrating my ability to enjoy stuff that I have no control over whether or not I truly enjoy.

Is this "Is Green Day Dead?" Part 2? What is the point?

I’m not really sure what I said that was so cynical or negative. It was more just true about the band’s quality right now but that they are capable of a lot. Just because you want green day to release things often doesn’t make me a horrible person. People can be really non-inclusive just because either you think they are stupid or just slightly negative, which is weird cause a lot of green day and green day related music is like that, but whatever
