Honestly, I was ok with HCTS as something they gave NHL to fulfill their contract, but if that’s what they’re doing for their next album/EP, I’d rather they just didn’t release anything.

It makes me feel like I’m watching an old person saying the things they used to say, repeating their old mannerisms, but it’s not them anymore, it’s just a shell, it’s like watching an automation of what they used to be.

Sad but true

Definitely the song I needed. Really upbeat and hopeful with some nice lyrics. It's a good summer song to blare with the windows down while driving around.

At 59 seconds the way Billie sings "We're gonna take back the night" reminds me of the same vocal delivery as "Stop when the red lights flash". Anyone else hear that?

Just so happy that it really does feel like better days are ahead.

They really set the bar low with HCTS and I wonder if that didn’t come out but this was released if people would give it the same reception. I think like others said Longshot and The Network album shows Billie and the band still has so much in them but for some reason they keep the playing it safe and rather generic with the Green Day stuff.

edit: just listened to it again. I like it musically and lyrically it’s a step up from HCTS but maybe I’m too depressed to enjoy it as the summer jam that people claim it is

So of course I was offline when this came out but I just listened to it and I do really like it. Sonically, this is a HUGE step up from FOAM, with no annoying clapping and weird background vocals. I agree with what others said about it having a strong Longshot sound. I also like the writing. Yes, it is very literal and not Billie's best metaphorical writing, but it is very honest and it is what needs to be said right now. Even so, there is still some depth to this. They are obviously talking about a lot of social issues here beyond just the pandemic starting to ease up. (Not really looking to start this kind of a discussion again, but I think most people here know the specific meaning of the phrase "take back the night," and it's no coincidence that Billie chose it). I am hopeful for the music to come. FOAM had some brilliant writing but a lame sound, and the Network album shows that the writing is still there as well. Pair that writing with sounds like this one and like HCTS, and I think we are going to get a great album.

I had to google that... Awful if true.

I don't understand how you consider that awful. I think it was something important that needed to be said.

Meh don't like the way the're going at the moment.

other artists are doing something different which i like, Foo fighters, Royal Blood, The Offspring for example. But can't say the same for Green Day.. :(

I thought the complaint here is that they are doing things that are "too different." 🤣

I like the message and really appreciate that he put it in a song that I can listen to and be reminded of it. But I don't really expect much more from Green Day nowadays, I kind of wonder if they've exhausted the pop punk sound?

I’m glad to see someone finally mentioning that Polyanna is a pretty sarcastic way to name a generically upbeat song.

Maybe that's the point? That there is hope but also a lot of bad stuff out there still and a lot of work that needs to be done? I think there may be a few meanings here buried under the literal stuff.

If that’s what he meant, which I’m not sure about, because it could be just a generic catchphrase, so I’m saying IF that’s he meant, it would be such hypocrisy that he could win a medal if hypocrisy was an Olympic sport.

Yeah, I fucking love it. I would bet a million dollars this is the 21st Century Breakdown era song that was provisionally called Wonderful.

Sounds like Billie decided to resurrect it and I'm glad. I'd say the writing is a step up from HCTS, but it may be from an earlier era. Overall the instrumentation sounds pretty good, I'd prefer if the guitar had a bit more bite but the synths were very tastefully done. Nice to see Green Day upbeat, but I think the title of the song is a bit of a self-deprecating, which is good. I'm really not sure what they're going for with the single artwork (a... hotdog? Okay.) so I'd kill for a more solid art direction, but I did notice it features the same font as the HCTS single so... album incoming? I'm thinking it's likely.

If that’s the case, I’m surprised they didn’t announce an album already

Just because he says wonderful in the song doesn’t mean it’s from 21st

until Green Day themselves confirm Wonderful Butch Vig Words aren’t always 100% he doesn’t have the greatest memory when it comes to songs he has literally made up songs from Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins that both bands have said “what song is that there’s no such song”

Maybe it sounds obvious but hearing BJ singing "It's wonderful to be alive. Everything is gonna be alright" warmed my heart. The lyrics are beautiful
The sound reminds me a lot of the Trilogy - which I like a lot! So I am very very very happy 😭
