We're in 2004. We got the single American Idiot followed by BOBD, JoS and Holiday . A fucking masterpiece album.
Then in 2009, Green Day released the single Know Your Enemy followed by 21 Guns, East Jesus Nowhere and 21stCB. Different sound, but DAMN this album is another fucking masterpiece.

And theeeeeeeen we're in April 2012. Green Day announced a fucking TRILOGY album. The hype is big because their last 2 albums was amazing.
What do we got during the summer of 2012? Oh Love (with a bunch of Playboy girls)... followed by Kill The DJ... and Let Yourself Go. A big disappointment. But hey it's a Trilogy album. Let give them a chance with iDos! and iTré!

We all know what happened for iDos!. Billie playing Fuck Time during iHeart and the only single from this album was Stray Heart... an okay song. Forgettable.

Last chance with iTré!. We learnt that ''The Forgotten'' will be in Twilight. Yeah! Not
99 Revolutions will be in the credit for the movie The Campaign. Yeah! Not.
X-Kid is release. Thanks God this song is good tho. But worst fucking clip ever.

Overall that was the worst promotion ever. The worst singles ever. The worst times in the life of the band member ever to release a project like this.
My point of view.

I agree with most of this. It was a perfect storm of bad things happening to keep the albums from being successful. Also when you are coming off the level of success they were previously at, it's very hard to keep outdoing yourself. I think that plays into what Billie talked about in the podcast of continuing to push yourself to outdo yourself until you destroy yourself. I think the band should focus on doing what feels right to them rather than what they think will sell. And staying true to yourself usually leads to better success anyway. And they had a pretty decent comeback with Rev Rad.

Also, can we agree that Fuck Time is a masterpiece? :)

I do agree on Rob though. What's he up to these days? Why did they stop working with him in the first place?

My understanding was that he'd moved to a senior management position but not 100% sure that's why and yeah, RevRad was definitely produced by the band themselves

I still love the Trilogy I don't care what anyone says. Yeah, there are some bad songs on it and Dos is the worst of the three, but overall I still think it's great and I love the sound. Nuclear Family would have been a better pick than Oh Love for a first single. It didn't help that dear Mr. Sam Bayer blew it with the music video. If the reason for the boys moving forward without Rob was because the Trilogy was a chart flop, I do hope they revisit working with him again in the future with a fresh outlook.

RevRad was fantastic for a self produced album. My only issue with it is that the mixing is a little strange. The quiet parts are very quiet and the loud parts are very loud. I have to turn it up and down all the time when I listen to it.

There are so many unnecessary additions to FOAM when it comes to effects and whatnot that sometimes it almost ruins an otherwise awesome song for me. An example would be Junkies On A High. Good song, but that high pitched chipmunk effect or whatever it is is incredibly intrusive and annoying as hell. Who thought that was a good idea? That was absolutely not needed and doesn't enhance the song in any way. That's really the worst offender for me, but there are a good amount of other songs that I have issues with as well, mainly in regards to filtering.

I don’t know why this goes with out saying but a producer who allows Rivers Cuomo to sneak a lyric about Narnia into a song shouldn’t be producing a Green Day record.

lol Rivers can put any words in his song and it still sound amazing. I don't think the producer have power on that over him.

To be fair, Jake and the rest of the band made him change 'Grapes Of Wrath' lmao

The original bridge (which I dig for how straightforward it is) went like this, as evidenced by Riverchat, Weezerpedia, and Rivers' Zoom Stream before the album dropped:

Pornhub helps folks loosen up
Medication works for some
I'd prefer a Tolstoy read
Soon I'll be there smiling
Smiling in my dreams

Then he replaced it with ""Some folks pop an ambien / Some run laps around the gym".

Jake also didn't like his replacement bridge about ambien and gyms either, thus we get one more about how books paint images in your minds, which definitely fits.

Excited to see how Jake and the guys pull of SZNS next year

Maybe it’s just me, but his lyrics drive me insane sometimes with the things he says hahaha.

I just listened to The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance again, such an amazing production. This album was also produced by Rob Cavallo, engineered by Doug McKean, mixed by CLA and mastered by Ted Jensen, exactly like American Idiot was. These four people would be a great combination again!

Sadly I don't think we will ever get a sound like in 2004-2006 :(

But isn't it amazing? 15 years of technological progress in between 2006 and now and there are still not many albums that sound better in my opinion 😅

I know and it's sad. Look like the ''progress'' isn't my style of music.

I could make time in my schedule, maybe give them a Spring 2022 release.

I'm a man of the people and know what Green Day fans want.  FOAM and Trilogy sounds, but pushed waaaaaaay further.   More vocal effects and Butch Walker allowed to change anything he wants.

Millenium whoa-oh-ohs.

Don't forget lots of clapping. And whistling. Seems to be the in thing at the moment.

Speaking of little effects in songs, has anyone else noticed that (VW) Beginning of the End and (FOAM) IWATT both have that same little hook “Do-do-Do-do-do” at the end of the choruses? I wonder which song was written first?

I could take or leave Stray Heart. For some reason it never clicked with me and I don't know why. Let Yourself Go is a better song live imo. I do have a soft spot for Oh Love because of how prominent Billie's voice is in that song. It sounds really good and at times it's basically just him singing with a little bit of guitar. It makes it feel very intimate while also having a big sound as a whole. Kill The DJ just slaps.

It wouldn't be a Weezer song without at least one head-scratching worthy line tbh

that's one of the reasons i'm on board with them, to see what goofy thing Rivers says or references next 😂

Sorry but Let Yourself Go and Stray Heart are like top tier songs. I also really like Oh Love and Kill the DJ (although ik they had mixed reception)

In my opinion Stray Heart and Kill the DJ are one of their most unique and best songs. Honestly, I love the Trilogy very much. But basically any song from the Trilogy doesn't have that mainstream vibe. Maybe it's because the production sucks, which I have to say is a common theme in general for Green Day records. Basically all their albums can sound way way better. For example, listen to any AC/DC album or newer Bryan Adams albums and then listen to any GD album. You'll notice how dull, flat and lifeless GD records sound. It's like they're very filtered, processed or something. I'd like to strip away the film that covers it. To me Nimrod, Warning and FOAM are their best sounding records in terms of how they were recorded and mixed.

If you people here agree with me on this, there's a simple solution and everyone can improve greatly the GD sound. If you use Apple Music/iTunes on your computer, there's a built-in EQ that you can play with it for 5 minutes to get a better result. The preset that you'll set up is not great for all albums though, so it's good to make different presets for each album. If you don't use Apple Music and you're Mac user you can download an app for free called eqMac, which is even better EQ. If there's anybody interested in this but don't know how to work this out or don't wanna waste time I can send you screenshots with my presets to try it. After you listen to a Green Day album that's a little bit tweaked you can't go back. After that they sound as great as the material itself is.

I'm all for Sinclair or Shinn, but no one knows this band better than Rob Cavallo and he's produced the bands' two most well-known and successful albums. Unfortunately it doesn't look like he's produced anything in half a decade other than a song with Lil Peep. Another suggestion I'll put out there is Brendan O'Brien.

Yeah, Rob would be my top pick just because he knows them so well and knows how to bring out their best work. It's unfortunate he's not actively producing stuff at the moment. :(
