Green Day’s Label Future

I posted in the HCTS thread, but it didn’t get any attention. Obviously there’s been talk of the Warner contract expiring. Every post Dookie release is credited to Reprise Records on streaming services, but Here Comes the Shock is just credited to Green Day instead of a label. Potential foreshadow of more independent music to be released in the future!

I was convinced after 2020 they had made a new deal with Warner because Dreaming, NFM and MM2020pt2 were all copyrighted and promoted by Reprise.  This was a surprise to see HCTS copyrighted Green Day only.  Maybe their contract ran through the 2020 calendar year since that was the year of their last contractually obligated album? Idk but it does seem like all bets are off now.

If they left I hope it was on good terms and the sudden suspending of all their fan sites on IG has nothing to do with anything. It’s weird that it happened on the day of their first independent release isn’t it, when those groups would have been most active?

Things are getting spicy.

If this song is just credited to GD, could it be that they went ahead and released a song out of contract, against their Warner contract? Is this related to all the insta fan pages being taken down?  Are Warner doing all that out of spite??

I'm so confused!!

Bill posted a few minutes ago that the band & management have no hand in the instagram thing. To think that Warner is that petty/unprofessional because an artist may not resign is rather odd. They have a lot of artists on their label. The idea that one band possibly leaving is going to upset them is ridiculous. It's not a Taylor Swift vs. old label situation.

Bill also said it’s happened with lots of artists though.

Yeah, obviously the situation is currently unfolding so posts from even a few minutes ago haven’t aged well.

Back to topic, so are Green Day independent now?

My theory is, that GD now owns their master rights and are still with Warner. By example, the two new Taylor Swift album are marked as „(c) Taylor Swift“ on iTunes but they are distributed by Republic Records. Second, the newsletter email about Here Comes the Shock was sent by Warner. This is why I think they are still with Warner but they renegotiated their contract 🤔

Considering this is the first song released under this new designation do you think this is evidence that this is indeed a new song written and recorded in 2021 and not a leftover from the FOAM sessions? If it was it would still have been owned by Warner like The Network songs were right?

Warner only owns the masters so as I understand it, this could be a song they wrote or demoed in the past but never recorded while Warner had the rights to own their masters.

I think it‘s like @Beerjeezus says. Maybe the song was writte during the FOAM sessions but just recently recorded
