Obviously not. Do I really need to explain to you what a record label does? Surely not.

again, do I really have to explain what a record label is and what the difference is between a label and a sports league?

No but you could explain why it's an issue for them to get paid by the NHL. If the NHL was known to be making them write particular music or was known to have done shitty things as a corporation then it might be a problem. But as far as I can see they're just getting paid to release an extra song. Otherwise it might've shown up on a future album or in years past it might've got released as a b-side. Just not seeing who is hurt by it.

Cool so obviously signing for a major label puts the band into the mainstream, allows them to access way more fans and essentially provides them with a career rather than just putting records out on indie labels and doing ok. The band probably wouldn’t be going if they stayed independent, so there’s less of an issue with that.

Putting a song out solely for the NHL is, in my opinion, quite different to signing for a major label. This is a (in the general opinion) low quality song that couldn’t make it onto the worst album of the band’s career, so it probably wasn’t rated that highly by the band. I hope to god this wouldn’t have seen the light of day on another album. It’s the principle of putting a song out solely for the paycheque but an organisation that is solely using for advertising rather than having any creative or artistic interests in the music as a label would. Obviously a label still profits from the band but there’s much more mutual benefits than solely money.

Yes, no ones hurt, but for a band that has cried and cried about being labelled sellouts for signing for a major label (which they weren’t) they’ve then gone and done something which 25 years ago would’ve been considered selling out. They can do what the hell they want, I’m sure the retirement funds will take any top up, it just isn’t something I really expected to see. Call me old fashioned, I just expected Billie to be more in the Mick Jones mould as he got older rather than clinging on to things that have passed and taking the money being thrown.

Tbf we don't know when this song was recorded. For all we know, it was recorded after the album release.

Ufff the level of seriousness and type of expectations most of the people posting in here have is really making me feel detached from this community. Wanted to post something about the song, but feel like I would end up in the foam-ish situation of having to defend myself from being the “fan defending the indefensible”.

So whatever, se ya’ll when the next sad emoish ballad with tearful lyrics come out, I am sure I will be able to get some joy from this forum again then :P

Nobody here is asking people who like the song to defend themselves. If you enjoy it, then enjoy it!

You're not alone in your feelings. I feel the same way. Sometimes this place makes it hard just to enjoy the band and their music. Some people here have a problem for every solution.

Chris Dugan mixed it and Butch produced it. I don't think GD will ever break out of their comfort zone with these two Yes-men.

This is cool, I’ve never heard it. The song was also covered by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Queen and many other artist (I’ve never even heard of :D)

@That Dude Thanks for the info about Annie Get Your Gun! :)

Fair enough, everyone has its own expectations about this band and more in general about what punk rock should be in 2021. I don’t want to diminish that.
It’s just a bit of a bummer to come in here and read 9/10 posts being complaints about everything this band released since 21CB. And I do think that some of the MM2020P2 songs are better than this one, and I do love concept albums with deep lyrics, and would also like to get one of those again some day.
But I manage to enjoy a typical and simple fun punk rock song like that, and it surprises me to basically only see complaints about in this forum. Especially in a year like this when we had tons of music from Billie and the band.
Or to see a stupid music video like that, clearly made to make some auto-irony and promote a ridiculous but cool punk rock aerobics program in this pandemic times, just becoming the worst music video this band has ever made.
Dunno, I expect and see that on Facebook, I get a bit bored when it’s most of the conversations going on in here.

But the fact that I get bored and don’t want to engage in a conversation because of that it’s my problem and not anyone else’s. No worries.

@BillieMyLove & @HAPPY FINKING UNICORN, I coudn’t agree more. But, I guess I’m just gonna enjoy the song anyway :D

In the end there are more important things going on right now than arguing about bands.

I’m comfortable saying butch is not a great producer for them, but Chris has engineered/mixed everything since AI so he’s definitely more than capable of getting good sounds from them

Exactly. This is supposed to be a place to escape from all the B.S. in the world. Let's just enjoy the little bright spots we have. Thanks for being nice.

I am sad now though because the video you posted says it is not available in my country LOL.

Aw don’t be that way, I miss you around here. We’re like a big dysfunctional family. This is a place to vent and rant but I’m sure (at least I hope) that no matter what we say here no one takes this stuff that seriously. It’s one song, and we haven’t really had new Green Day in a year so people were excited and some are feeling a little let down or suckered by the hype machine. I may have had a few beers last night. That’s all.

Look, if I really thought Billie or the band had lost it no way would I still be here. They proven enough times to me over the past few years that they are still capable of producing great work. When they’re ready to they will again and I’ll still be around.  For anyone else who’s still butthurt, just put Nimrod on or your GD/side project of choice and enjoy.

I like your take. We are in a weird space right now feeling like we have all been in suspended animation for the past year. FOAM is the last official Green Day thing we were left with, and then we never got to here those songs on tour. So it feels like we are just stuck in that moment. But this song shows a return to a much better musical style in my opinion, and MM202II shows that the writing is there too. They probably are being cramped a little by Warner/their producers and managers/this stupid NHL contract, but I think the music--like everything else--is going to get a lot better when the world starts getting back to normal.

I know some of you guys are not big fans of Butch Walker after FOAM (I personally really like the album and really enjoyed his production on that) and now HCTS (where for me the problem is the songwriting rather than the production), but does anyone else think he probably produced MM2020 Pt 2 as well; I may be wrong but I don’t think we’ve had any production credits for that yet?

He did not, save for art of the deal and degenerate which were foam cuts

I've not heard the entire song yet. But after hearing only the chorus, I don't think I wish to listen to the entire thing. And I've just took the last hour to read all this topic's pages. With all this negativity about the song, I don't want to listen to it. I like the instrumental. It has a very punk-ish vide to it. But the chorus ruined everything. I keep hearing «Here comes the shark» instead of «Here comes the shock», and that was before reading that I wasn't alone hearing this.

Add to this that the sneek peek I saw from the official video looks terrible. I can understand there is a pandemic and it makes it difficult to create videos with many people at the moment, but this one looks like a bad idea.  It seems someone was bored and found this girl on social medias and then offered the job for the video thinking what she was doing online was funny and that everybody would think the same.

After FOAM (in which I was disappointed) and HCTS, I wonder where the good Green Day went. This band can still create masterpieces, but it doesn't feel like it for the last 2 years. Side projects were superiors than GD in therms of quality.

After a few listen of FOAM I started to like the song.
But this one.... nothing.

Seriously they need to grow as musicians and stop doing cringey shit to stay relevant.
Can you please make inspired music again :D

Thats a pretty big assumption on the character of both men.

I can only assume you have been privy to recording sessions in order to make that statement ?

I agree. I don't know a whole lot about Butch, but Chris has been with them for a long time and helped them produce great stuff. Plus he's in The Network, so creativity is obviously not foreign to him.

He is also in the coverups and mixed and engineered The Longshot (probably did FBHT as well, but I'm just assuming that).

I don’t think the pandemic is an excuse for that crappy video. I think @IcyMoffatt hit it on the head that they found her online and thought it would be funny.  They certainly can make high quality or performance videos now, the many Network videos we got are great examples of these (including one that looks like a movie trailer). Heck, even the NFM videos Billie recorded in his house and Greg slapped together from old photos and videos were better.
