What do you expect for the next Green Day album?

Which classic Green Day sound would that be, the Dookie one or the American Idiot one?

Precisely. The classic Green Day sound is whatever album or albums the person using that term likes the most. As a band they've always continued to push forward sonically, and the moment they stop pursuing that progress is the the beginning of the end IMO.

I don't think the band should stay away for their 'classic sound' in the next record, since they experiment so much in side projects, I don't see the point of it.

If you're including everything from 1989-2004 as classic Green Day, then there's no point in using the term. American Idiot is completely different to 39/Smooth and the early EPs in every way. Depending on how you define the word classic, you could also include 21CB in there. Or Uno as that's been described as "classic Green Day" by Billie Joe

Totally agree, it's amazing how Green Day changed their styles over the years. I'd say that they literally never did what was expected from them (even 21CB was unexpected in my opinion because the quality in terms of the songwriting/production/effort was just on another level in comparison to everything before), so FOAM was somehow the logical consequence of GD's evolution, because nobody expected them to do such an album after RevRad (at least I didn't)

Yes, it is completely different, but you can still see the traces of their old sound in them, just like in every other record, except the whole majority of Father Of All.

I just said 90's plus Idiot because what came next is a blend of everything - 21cb is a atep forward from idiot but it also has sonorities that can be recognized in old GD tunes, same with the trilogy - the only departure from their 'classic' sound is FOAM.

This is a discussion that won't go anywhere, but you don't need to play dumb, pretending you don't know what a 'green day classic sound' would be.

Overall I just want to say that a group of musicians who has a side project to explore everyother styles they want, don't need to keep changing GD's sounding at every new release... they can play safe as Green Day

I wasn’t playing dumb when I asked the question. My point was I don’t think they have one classic sound. Every album sounds different so when people say that it doesn’t really mean anything

When "green day classic sound" can literally mean anything except their most recent album, then no I'm not exactly sure what sound you're talking about.

Also, FOAM isn't really all that different from Green Day's regular sound outside of a couple tracks.

well. if you guys can't see similarities between 39/smooth to nimrod, it's impossible to discuss this. I know their sound evolved, but the basics remained the same during their first 15 years as a band... after Idiot they branched out that sonority, but it is always part of their new music...

also, it's impossible to hear 'Back In The Usa' and don't have the feeling that 'oh my god, this is green day'... different if you go listen to 'Oh Yeah', where probably you thought 'what a fuck is this'

Even that would get old quick idk. I want more Green Day for sure but I want side projects in general to continue as well because it’s clear Green Day has become this narrow thing for them.

Yeah, it'd definitely get old fast. Hence the /s.

In all seriousness though, I'd like to see Green Day try the ramones-core thing The Network was doing. Songs like TLM, CUNT, etc. are some of the most fun ones Billie's written in a long time imo. I think Green Day proper could really knock that sound out of the park

They never do the same thing twice. I'm not going to try to predict what Album 14 ends up sounding like but considering pretty much every album since Dookie has had its own sound I definitely don't expect another Motherfuckers (although I actually really love that record so would absolutely welcome that). Even the only direct sequel they've ever done (We Told Ya So) sounded pretty far from the original Network record.

Also, more comedy in Green Day! Stuff like Respirator, Cancer is the New Black, Amnesia Vagabond were so refreshing and really reminded me of songs from Nimrod and moments in AI (Homecoming) where you can tell it's just the band having a blast creatively -- but also there's a clear essence of quality where you can really tell they worked really hard on the project and wanted to write the absolute best album they could. Come to think of it RevRad was like that too with how Bang Bang is lyrically.

If you can't see similarities between FOAMF and RevRad/trilogy, then same.

Btw, people said "what the fuck is this" about Nightlife too which arguably is less green day sounding than any of the songs on FOAMF

A neverending virtual tour that I can go to anytime I want.

Huge anthems that make 21 Guns seem small potatos.

And as Mike likes to say, Green Day firing on all cylinders.

As Billie likes to say, 100% Green Day.

As Tre likes to make,  poop joke.

What about Green Day partnering with another band for an entire album?

The Saints are Coming is the greatest song of all time, space and coffee and I think this could work well across multiple songs.

Instead of U2,  I'd like to see a Green Day/Offspring record.

Greenspring, The Off Day, GrofDing or a completely new name.

I feel like they could compliment each other and possibly correct a lot of the issues that people have with each other.

The Offspring are basically just Dex and Noodles, so it would be basically a five piece band.

Title - Nail in the Pop Punk Coffin

Some orchestral pieces.

Sequels to homecoming and JOS.

And the rest is a mix of earliest era of both bands and their usual sound.

As a big fan of both bands, this is a collab I would fully embrace
