Is Green Day Over?

Bullshit. There are very few people here who have actually attempted to understand what my stance is and engage in civil conversation.

Then there's people like you who resort to calling me a drama queen simply because I'm done with you.

Anyways, I'm done here. I thought maybe we could discuss this calmly and civilly, but I was wrong.

I was just joking, but I absolutely did address your topic several times.  I don't believe Green Day are over for the reasons I stated.  If that gets you upset I'm sorry.

It is rational to be concerned, never said it wasn't. It's just such an overreaction

I'd just admit I fucked up and move on

Please tell me someone else read this and that I’m not fucking crazy.

If you think the thread is dramatic, THEN DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME. You have not addressed the topic at all, and you are not contributing to the conversation. I think you should just leave this alone.

@Hungry Hungry Supermodels I completely understand why you're upset, but please, try to calm down. We're just people on the internet that are disagreeing with you on one point but the love we share for the same band is much bigger than this.

Don't be so upset with people who don't even know who you are. If you need, take some time away from here. Do what's best for your mental health.

The thread title is "Is Green Day over?".  Your original post says literally nothing.  So what do you expect people to say?  Are we supposed to debate ourselves?

Whether you think Billie is bored, unhappy, depressed or over it, clearly others here disagree with your conclusion that he no longer wants to be in Green Day.  He is a temperamental, moody musician with a history of depression and anxiety issues, he's not going to be all happy and upbeat all the time. He's been this way since day one and Green Day have had plenty of ups and downs in their career.  He has always kept going because it is his life and his livelihood.  He could have retired years ago, he can afford to, but he won't until he literally can't do it anymore because he loves making music and he loves Green Day.  He'll take breaks, do side projects, whatever he needs to do but it is all in the service of keeping the mothership afloat.

I think you've mostly got it.

I guess I'll make this clear now (and I will edit the OP). We never have to question whether Billie will continue making music. It's very obvious that Billie likes playing music, being in a band, etc. But the question at hand is: do you think Billie is enjoying doing such as Green Day, and will Green Day continue?

That question has actually been asked by other people and is a better way of putting it. I think sometimes Billie enjoys Green Day and sometimes he wonders if it's worth the effort. Just like all of us do with anything we love and have to put a lot of effort into. Sometimes we wonder it about our own children, but we would never leave them and in the end they're the most precious things in our lives. Which by the way I'm sure Billie is experiencing right now also, lol.

I think everyone is literally stuck in a groundhog's day moment.  I think this year has been tough, and we don't know his personal life and how things are going, etc., so the general mood of the world is just... subdued.  Do I think he still enjoys playing as Green Day?  Yes, I do... I think that Mike and Tre stretch Billie's talents.  At the start of FOAM and after the New Years(?)  2020 performance where he seemed a little out of control that night, and I was a little worried about him starting out a new album and tour in that way... but last night, he gave a fully professional performance.  He looked and sounded great and played a very fitting montage to current circumstances, and I think there was a lot of thought about the 3 songs, and they seemed really on point to me.  All 3 radio hits (1 from the 2010's, 1 from the 2000's, 1 from the 90s -- showcases their longevity and why they are already RRHOF inductees.  Song choices also on point for the messages for each.  Still breathing, man nothing hits more than that right now for me, Holiday -- this country is still divided by conservative, far right propaganda, which may finally hit its pinnacle, and may finally just be on its way out, if the political blowhards can just do what's right once in their lives, and then Basket Case -- anxious and neurotic to the bone.  That's still true for him and for most us to be honest.  Hard not to feel anxious when things still are so uncertain, and the end seems close, but always just outside our reach.   I think there is still a lot left for Green Day.  They are only 49 -- look at the Who and the Stones, c'mon, Green Day are not hanging it up any time soon.  Even if you are right, and Billie really is sad or depressed, and even that is a stretch if you ask me, and I lean more towards the possibility that some fans projecting just a little too far, based on some tidbits of info they think they know about his personal life.  I'm just saying, he's a musician, and he gets both his joy and probably his frustration from making and playing music.  There are plenty of new directions to explore and find for this band.  It's just the world is on a never ending pause, and when things finally "unpause", I think the momentum will pick up, and green Day will be just fine.

This isn't speculating about his personal life. This is just wondering if he likes being in Green Day.

I really can't imagine Green Day continuing for much longer. It's been  while, and you can only do the same thing for so long without getting tired of it. Maybe Billie Mike and Tre will drop Green Day for good and just do side projects where they don't have standards and expectation placed on them.

But Green Day have never been the same thing, it's why they've strived to evolve and make each era different from the one before.  They've shown they can experiment with Green Day to a point.  They'll continue to do that.  The side projects (while I think have produced some of their best music recently) are a pressure valve that allows Green Day to continue.   My comment earlier about side projects wasn't to suggest that they would stop Green Day, just that they would continue if for no other reason but to keep supporting the side projects financially if that's what they enjoy.  But I really think Green Day are another creative outlet that they need.  Beyond that, it is also a corporation that employs a lot of people.  They wouldn't drop that lightly.

If I were to ask you what some common staples of Green Day are I think you’d be able to answer. Green Day has things that make it unmistakably Green Day.

I hadn’t thought of your last point. That makes sense.

Just using Green Day to fund side projects seems like where they’re going. In that case Green Day would be over in the sense that we would direct our attention to the side projects since Green Day would be more like a shit posting account (for lack of a better phrase).

If you truly love what you do, you never tire of it. Does it frustrate you? Absolutely. But that is what loving what you do is. A push and pull of all human emotions and one you learn as you get older and have life experiences.

In the stance of Billie, Mike and Tre: They love making music. They love who Green Day is. They have said on multiple occasions that anyone who leaves green day, leaves in a body bag. That is your answer.

But again, these three guys are human beings. They are imperfect and to expect perfection every damn day from them is unrealistic.

Also, listen to this podcast. Maybe (or maybe it wont) open your thinking:

They've said they love to play venues of all sizes too and we saw how much they enjoyed the RevRad tour.  That's one thing side projects can't do for them.  The Network will never play arenas or have high profile deals with professional sports.  They get to have the best of everything this way.

I thought of that podcast when I read your post.  Green Day is hard because it challenges him creatively.  The side projects are for the most part fun and easy.  The Longshot wasn't nearly the creative challenge that FOAM was.  He needs that.

It's such a great one. She did a great job of getting him to really open up about his creative process - something only she has been able to do.

Good points all around.

To your first point (and kind of your second too), what is it that they love? Do they love the music, or do they love the name? They can, and will, go on forever making music. But will Green Day last?

To your second point, we know what they've said. When I was six, I said I was gonna be a fucking fairy princess when I grown up, but does that make it true?

Lastly, I don't expect perfection very time. I've seen them at least twice in every era I've been alive for (sadly, that includes the trilogy era), and I've seen some terrible shows where they were wasted beyond wits. I still thought it was the coolest shit ever, because that's may favorite band. What I do expect is a decent performance, especially since I know they can do way better than decent. I just haven't seen that in a while.

Very good point, but if the side project were the norm then they'd be much more popular.

Where I’m from, silly means drunk (well, I guess we do use it in the way you meant it, but I’ve never heard it that way from anyone over the age of 45 and under the age of 30).

Anyways, I’d like to thank you for your meaningful contribution to the ongoing debate. Comments like this make it very easy to maintain this faux politeness. While your contribution it greatly appreciated, I’d like to say that no one is requiring you to participate in this. You don’t have to add anything, especially if it’s not productive.

Why don’t you ask them if your wanting THEIR response?  I’m speaking from an adult life that has lived and does what I do everyday because I love it NOT because I decided at the age of 6 I wanted to be a fucking artist but because it’s who I AM.

WE are not Green Day. Only Green Day can answer when they are done. And based on this thread, you wouldn’t accept - or believe - the answer they gave you because your mind is already made up that they are done.

As fans we have the option to continue following because we enjoy the music & shows OR leave because we don’t.

And you really missed the point of why they do side projects. I HIGHLY suggest you go listen to the podcast I recommended to better understand WHY Billie does what he does.

You totally missed the point of the fairy princess line. The point is that no matter how many times they say their not breaking up, people can't predict the future. Saying something doesn't mean it's gonna turn out that way (otherwise someone owes me a pink tutu, some wings, a crown, ad a kingdom).

From my limited 14 years of experience, willing something into existence doesn't work, and life doesn't happen the way you want it to. But hey, what do I know?

And claiming a band is “over” when you aren’t a member of said band doesn’t make it true just because they didn’t meet your vague performance expectations.

move on to something else that brings you fucking joy because no reasoning that any of us who disagree give, is going to satisfy you.
