They gave Green Day a lot of time and spotlight for a probably paid gig. Halftime show, the artist pays to put it on, so they give them the spotlight. This also WASN'T a halftime SHOW, it was a montage. The artists who do the Superbowl don't get paid? If they got paid for this it was clearly the better gig, and without all the hate that typically follows a half time show. All the tweets I saw for this performance were positive and full of love and nostalgia for the band. This was a win, even if it gets fewer viewers. (Plus any paid gig right now for musicians is a win)

jengd
Same, didn’t know that about Super Bowl gigs, that’s surprising! And so many acts just seem to get grief for it, not the massive deal we all take it to be then.
GuitarPunk94
ive read somewhere that the weekend put around 7 million dollars into his super bowl performance

Virginia Lot Lizard
Billie’s hair = nice. Except for the longish bits in the back. I wish it was exactly like the Longshot video and promo pics. Also. What the f#%* he doesn’t look aged he just looks sad and tired. But beautiful. He’s always pretty. He looked puffy during Rev Rad too. I think he looks like that when he’s bored or feeling trapped or sad. He looked like that between Warning and American Idiot too. Anddddd from the rumors I’ve heard he was sad / troubled during that time too. We don’t know what’s going on but facts he seemed to be having a bit of fun with his IG and then deleted it and also unfortunate stories in the news etc. P.S. Seriously I love the GDC. Thank you for these discussions. 2 minutes ago, jetsrule128 said: Mike just posted That FOAM came out a year ago but nothing about last nights performance wonder why I think it’s appropriate. Like what someone else said on this thread about FOAM being like a party and the theme of last night performance not being too light or frivolous. Giving the people what they want with past hits and apt songs like Still Breathing, Holiday and Basket Case for these crazy times and a very wide audience of nfl fans. Popular Post Chin for a Day
Watched it today. No fancy words, they were fantastic. Loved the song choices, fit perfectly with the theme

It feels like there’s a dark cloud but it’s not over Tre or Mike but they’re being respectful and great. Keeping it light and not too much behind the scenes and promo on hold. It’s like there’s an internal weird storm brewing and something big is coming.

For all we know that could be an artificial feeling resulting from him being offline. We think it's a sign he's unhappy but it could be the other way around. He could be happier this way being cut off from the trolls and the haters (even if we are all a bit bummed out with the world situation and the tour still being uncertain). Social media might have been bringing him down even more and he might not want to come back. That actually worries me more than the possibility that it's a sign he's currently unhappy.

I also never get tired of Basket Case because Tre’s drums are 🔥🔥🔥 He’s always full of shit 😄 At the time he said that I think people were okay with the idea of feeling bad but after the year we’ve had, it’s okay to want songs that make you feel good again. It’s like famous last words he probably regrets now. Does it feel like the band and their fans all woke up from a collective fever dream involving a unicorn, a pile of cocaine and a lot of leopard print? FOAM? What was that? No, RevRad was our last album... the details are kind of fuzzy... how did I get here? It’s true that we all got enough of feeling bad in the past year... I don’t know? FOAM you say? Whatever it was it seems to be over.
Popular Post Annie, get your gun
I LOVE IT They were absolutely amazing 👏👏👏 but when aren't they? I hate that they cut their performance horribly to put the clips, wasn't expecting that. And it goes like this: "Still Breathing" > We're still here 》"Holiday" > We're Green Day 》"Basket Case" > And we always kick ass! 2

Haha so true! They were telling a little story. The sonic buildup was perfect too from the slow to the medium to the big energy song. Very well put together medley that spanned their decades long career in chronological reverse order in three songs. Stylistically varied, thematically appropriate and all hits. I love my band 💚 1
greendepent
Hearing the performance with better audio, it seems is not cut on post, but the band performed the songs in that way! I was checking if there was a way to remove the commentators voices and maybe there is a way. Gotta play for a while Geek fact. This is probably the second time that BJ plays the guitar on Still Breathing on live performances

Hungry Hungry Supermodels
That performance was utterly pathetic. Billie looked like he had better things to do, and that ruined the whole damn thing. His vocals were so processed that it sounded too good. Everyone else seemed like they didn't mind being there. The only person who was obviously living their best life on that stage was Tre. Even Mike seemed a little out of it. This was disappointing.

I respect that you have different opinion on it but, there was no audience, so the “energy” was different. The only people there were the filming crew and GDs crew. IMO they all looked liked they were excited to be playing. Mike was his self slinging his bass, Billie was doing his thing (probably trying to remember the lyrics) - he is a performer who feeds off the crowd. Tre was doing his usual antics behind the kit. It was a tight performance for a band that hasn’t been on a stage in a year. They picked a song none of us expected. The vocals sounded great (yes, a little mixed but he sounded like he did when I saw them in 2017) - you could actually hear Mike & Jason on the backing, which hasn’t been happening in the last few years. It’s not like they were out of tune, off key, out of time or forgetting words. I'm not sure what you were expecting for a prerecorded TV performance. It was not a concert and not billed as one. It was Green Day doing Green Day.
Flashback
I have a feeling that a second American Idiot will be released this or next year. Billie looks like in 2002/2003 and The Network released an album 🤔
pacejunkie punk
Even when they appear on late night and daytime shows there is always a studio audience so to have no audience at all had to be weird. It was more like doing a video but there you’re miming to a recording. I think for a performance to cameras alone without an audience this was surprisingly energetic.

Audience or not, ever since FOAMF came out, Billie hasn't seemed like he was enjoying himself (save for a few outliers).

Seemed like the energy was the same to me - outtakes not withstanding. We have clearly watch different performances and have different views on what is a good one. I thought the guys looked great, happy and I’m gonna leave it at that ✌
Miss_A
I have followed Green Day since 1991 when i saw them in Wigan, England. I have seen them play live 64 times and really feel this was a soul less performance. 😥 So sad. 😓😥 But I think the fire has finally gone out. 💔 The whole set felt hollow and lacking in passion and warmth. Gutted! Edited February 7, 2021 by Miss_A 2
Squashie
Welp... hang it up boys. After your first time back on stage IN A YEAR(!!) you’ve lost it. SMH... some of you will never be satisfied because it’s not 2004 anymore. Reair old footage- bitching. New performance-bitching. 2 1
