39/Smooth Test Pressing Ebay Listing Reaches Over $1,000

For context, there were anywhere from 20-40 copies made, as Lookout sent tests to record stores and distributors as promotional copies. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth more than $450, but someone out there is crazy enough to spend over $1000. With 5 days left, I’m curious to see if it will go any higher

I think the guy who made this listing got a little carried away with the description.

“Billie Joe's BIG DICK guitar tones ring out with fury on this LEGENDARY bands 1st effort.”

I mean, I wouldn't really argue with that description tho....

Is it actually true that test pressing sound better or just sellers jargon

I’ve never heard of that before, but I suppose it makes sense. I found this on Reddit:

”The quality of a pressing run steadily declines somewhat as the stampers slowly wear out. So would you rather have copy #3 or copy #9,875?”

I can’t imagine the difference would be all that noticeable though

I would. Are the guitar tones on 39/Smooth really that good? Especially compared to Dookie or American Idiot? And can Billie even claim responsibility for the guitar tones? He only had one shitty amp at the time, which John bought. A lot of that was Andy Ernst’s production, and probably the studio’s amps.

Well I mean, they were just getting started then. They certainly were not yet at the level they were by the time they reached Dookie or American Idiot. But for what they were at that time, I think it is very good and nicely foreshadows that they were headed for great thing. Is it $1,000 good? I doubt it LOL, but I can see why someone might value it.

The record pressing plant doesn't put much time and care into the test pressings, they are meant to test tone and general accuracy of what was "wanted" during the cutting process. The actual quality of the pressing is not meant to be at the same level as that of the retail product that will be released

It's at $1035 right now, I'm going to be really bummed if this doesn't sell for 1039 smoothed out slappy dollars

This makes me scared for if I ever really try to get a reasonably priced Money Money 2020 pressing/repress...Some record prices are insane

Me too. Looking for any color Network Vinyl except the Aqua Blue one (not selling...just saying)

I was just so lucky snagging a multi-colour repress for a "normal" price a year or two ago
