Green Day Turned Down Pop Disaster 2

Saw it twenty years ago. I think Blink closed but maybe they rotated. If not it's probably because GD was coming off Warning whereas Blink was bigger off TOYPAJ. I believe Saves The Day played first. Anyway ,it wouldn't be the same since there's the scab version of Blink out now with no Tom . Plus I'm old and that $30 show would now cost triple the price.

I think it would probably be even more than triple the price now to be honest. Blink would try and fight for equal cut. So for Pop Disaster Blink did start as headliners but it changed as Green Day was drawing bigger crowds. After GD most people would leave and then Blink was headlining to lesser crowds.

You're right Saves The Day opened some of those shows and Jimmy Eat World did as well.

Been there done that. Green Day don't repeat themselves (with the exception of burps 😜)

and Kill The DJ lyrics.

I mean how many times does Blink want to get embarrassed?

You'd think they'd learn their lesson.  And it wouldn't have gotten any easier.  I remember watching the Whiskey A Go Go show last year and after Green Day came on after Weezer and FOB I felt so bad for those bands I was like man they must be really regretting saying yes right now.  They came out and did their little sets and Green Day came out and exploded and it was just like Pop Disaster.  They still shame everyone.

Just looked up the set for my show. Nothing exciting and very short but I did get to hear Maria

and you got to hear Waiting. There's a curse with me and that song - I never get to hear it at shows. I had the same curse with Rush and Closer To The Heart. I finally did get to hear Closer To The Heart on their last tour ever. Maybe I'll hear Waiting on GD's last tour ever lmao

I mean it's different though when GD comes on after them. It's a respect thing. If I open for Rancid and they blow me out of the water then people know that's why I was on first.

But to open for Blink and send everyone home before they come on is just worse. Imagine playing to an empty stadium at a show you're headlining.

I'm repeating myself like once a month but... We're so lucky to be Green Day fans. I'm so happy to be punk music lover since I'm young.

They definitely had Hella Mega planned out already at that point.

There's no saying whether they'd want to or not otherwise.

Sorry but this is hilarious. "Major bombshell" that Green Day turned down a tour with a currently very mediocre band who GD were blowing away on stage every night and savagely roasting in interviews when they toured before even though Blink were at the peak of their career at the time and GD were not? Ok.

This week, Hoppus dropped the major bombshell during a recent Twitch stream that there was actually a Pop Disaster 2 Tour in the works. However, much to the disappointment of fans, Green Day apparently didn’t want to take part.

“I’ll blow all your minds rn,” Hoppus said. “We asked Green Day to do Pop Disaster 2 and they said no. We asked them maybe two years ago?”

Lmao!

So apparently Blink 182 reached out to Green Day within the last year hoping to do a Pop Disaster reunion and Green Day gave them a big fat NO

What are your thoughts?

Makes sense, they would've been too focussed on planning the Hella Mega Tour most likely..

PS the original Pop Disaster was co-headline so they did alternate who went first

Hella Mega is allegedly "co-headline" too but we know they're not switching order. I thought at least for some time it was GD opening every night? Since Blink were much bigger at the time. But GD showed them up badly with this arrangement:

Quote

Several reviewers were unimpressed with Blink-182's headlining set following Green Day. "Sometimes playing last at a rock show is more a curse than a privilege […] Pity the headliner, for instance, that gets blown off the stage by the band before it. Blink-182 endured that indignity Saturday at the Shoreline Amphitheatre", a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle wrote in 2002

Or maybe it just happened to be that way round that night. Either way GD killed them though :P

with a currently very mediocre band

Yeah I hate to tell you this but GD isn't doing so hot either.

FOAMF at debut sold/streamed less than half of Blink's last album at 42,000 album equivalent units vs 95,000. and got the same Metacritic score (actually 1% more... grats).

Same story with RevRad and California both released next to each other; 95,000 vs 186,000.

You gotta leave the fansite bubble before you compare another band's quality lol

(for what it's worth I think all four albums listed above blow : ^) not a modern blink fan)

I would consider this good news if the reason wasn’t that they chose to tour with an even worse band.

I actually think modern Blink is enjoyable (Neighborhoods and California were fun imo), but I don’t care about seeing them live.

Don't really care about sales, it's just my opinion that Blink make mediocre music. And if we're talking live show quality there's no contest, Green Day blew Blink out of the water on stage then despite Blink being the hotter band at the time and they'd do they same now.

Tre said this during the Pop Disaster tour:

Quote

"We set out to reclaim our throne as the most incredible live punk band from you know who", said Cool. Cool contended that "we heard they were going to quit the tour because they were getting smoked so badly […] We didn't want them to quit the tour. They're good for filling up the seats up front."

How surprising that they chose not to do it again lol. Not saying Hella Mega is any better but the idea that them not doing a tour with Blink is a "major bombshell" is just funny to me.

I just found the section of an interview those Tre quotes are from. Kerrang Magazine interview from June 2002:

Quote

There is one red-hot question that surrounds the Pop Disaster tour, which is: why did Green Day take it? Rumours and whispers from those in the know say that is was to blow Blink 182 out of the water, which is something they're certainly doing. On a lazy Sunday afternoon, down by the riverside in Milwaukee, this question is put to Tré Cool.

"We set out to reclaim our throne as the most incredible live punk band there is," he says.

Who did you set out to reclaim that throne from?

"You know who," he says smiling. "Not that they ever were the greatest live band, but with all of the young kids who were coming to see Blink it was nice to have a chance to wreck their whole perspective of how things are." Would it be fair to say that you're stealing the show every night?

"Yeah, that would be fair."

I thought I would have to work harder to get this stuff out of you, Tré.

"Well it's the end of the tour," he says. "I don't give a fuck if they read it or not. They can't quit the tour now. That was one of the main concerns actually, that they were going to quit the tour because they were getting smoked so badly. That was something we heard. We were walking on pins and needles to make sure that their egos were stroked the right way."

Can't find the full interview but I know he also ripped on Tom Delonge in it, saying he refused to leave his tour bus lol. This is why I'm amused by this

To me California/Nine literally just sounds like +44. Which is kind of what it is. It's just boring tbh.

I don't remember Neighborhoods which probably says something in and of itself.

I will always remember 2016 as the year Blink came back, Green Day released their first proper follow-up to 21CBD, and somehow out of all of it Sum 41 put out the best pop punk record that year.

lol the subject in question is "why might GD turn down a PDT2" not "would Hermione like to see a PDT2"

Quoting what Tré thought in 2002 is irrelevant. If they still think the same way about their recent releases I'd see that as incredibly egotistical given that they're getting heavily outperformed by what really are mediocre releases themselves.

(not that they necessarily do - Hella Mega was already planned so it's a no either way)
