The other way up you're mostly looking at ocean, and 87% of the world's population lives above the equator.

Oh yeah there were definitely maps that were "sideways"/ways other than north-south in the past, before the whole world was known etc. I think once we knew about the poles it pretty much had to be either north-south or south-north though.
