The Network is back!

I follow the gd reddit forum, but there’s so much fanart people post that I didn’t pay attention to this, because I assumed it was a song some redditor recorded for fun. I wish I listened to it back then :(

Weirdly normal account. I'm still trying to figure out if this is a leak or a "leak". The Youtube name/description change, and Billie's acknowledgment, suggests The Network leaked it themselves, but that guy (who seems to be a normal guy, not a sockpuppet) says the leaker posted it on FB. Maybe they just asked their tour guys/label employees "hey who has a reddit account to post this for us?" That's the only thing I can think of.

Cash me outside?

Nailed it!  If Norah isn't availible, Dr. Phil and that girl can do vocals.  Hostile enviroment maked great art!

Maybe Billie and Norah could do an original album together.

Or he could get Lady Cobra for something.

I tried writing out the lyrics for The Ultimate Test, some of it I couldn't probably hear right but I hope the rest of you all could help out.

[Verse]
This is for real
Will be when the band starts playing
So we are coming home
So get used to being gone

Worn out your worn-out welcome
And now you dance to a different drum
So pack your bags and get on the bus
I'm only there(?) when you're short of water fuzz

[Chorus]
Sound the alarm
My friend is coming home
Too many years since you've been gone

Face the facts
Whatever up is next
Will be The Ultimate Test

[Verse 2]
I let you another time
You were so innocent
Sinners and the other guy
And now you seem so different

All lies, a thousand darts
You were out, and you're playing for cause
All lies and a thousand years
Love can imagine where you've gone

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
I knew you put inside(?)
I knew you through the other lie
I knew you wouldn't stand apart

I know all what you've done
And I know the party wouldn't die
I know I'll find you at the club

No

[Verse 3]
Back in the club was your favorite track
You would all have gone the one-way alley(?)
The dirty leaves that evolve the future
Nowhere to go but we couldn't stay

But we were young and so naive
A dirty dream that will live to follow
Looking back, I can see you now
Through all your words, an hour, an hour(?)

[Chorus]

Will be The Ultimate Test [x4]

If you ask me about the meaning of it for me, I'd say that what he wants "gone" and "on the bus" is sobriety. The friend who's coming home is alcohol (relating to the god damn Church of Lushotology), and it's going to be the "ultimate test" to see how it ends up.

Then the song turns to blabber about Amanda, probably and finds, in the end, that said ultimate test is to stop reminding himself of her because now, the "friend who's coming home" in the last chorus are the thoughts of her again.

Banger!

Yeah I had to make it about Amanda.

I posted my lyric interpretation earlier but I'll post again so we can compare notes! Haha.

This is for real,
(Forever leave?) when the band starts playing,
There's no way you're coming home
So get used to being gone
You wore out your worn out welcome
And now you dance to a different drum
So pack your bags and get on the bus
Like one of them and you're sure not one of us

Sound the alarm
My friend is coming home
Too many years since you've been gone
Face the facts
Whatever happens next
Will be the ultimate test

I remember another time
When you were so innocent
Same as any other guy
But now you seem so different
Cold eyes, a thousand yards
When you had heart and you bled for a cause
Cold eyes and a thousand years
I can't imagine where you've gone

Sound the alarm
My friend is coming home
Too many years since you've been gone
Face the facts
Whatever happens next
Will be the ultimate test

And I know you burn inside
And I know the truth behind the lie
And I know your world is torn apart

And I know how hard you tried
And I know the part of you that died
And I know how far you had to come

(Go!)

Back In Black was our favourite track
Feeling/peeling off down a one lane highway (?)
Nothing to lose and we followed the future
Nowhere to go where we couldn't stay
When we were young we were so naive
We had a dream that we lived to follow
Looking back I can see you now
So you went yours and I went my way

Sound the alarm
My friend is coming home
Too many years since you've been gone
Face the facts
Whatever happens next
Will be the ultimate test

Will be the ultimate test
(You went yours and I went my way)
Will be the ultimate test
(You went yours and I went my way)
Will be the ultimate test
(You went yours and I went my way)
Will be the ultimate test

I know people would be so confused but if Green Day wins best rock next week at the EMA’s the network should crash the acceptance speech

Totally, and rip into them 😂😂😂

Thanks @Boobooo I believe those lyrics are correct. I hadn’t thought about it as a metaphor for temporary sobriety as @Kurthical suggests but it sure does work, whether intentional or not.

I think to take this next level The Network will start making IG posts trashtalking back to Green Day and challenging them to a fight. It would be funny if the Golden Bull then stepped in and offered to host them to put up or shut up 😄

Dammit I like that idea now I really want a battle of the bands style throwdown!

And they for sure will reissue the first album and sell it alongside the new one. Collectors will want both and it seems as though there are a lot of confused newer fans out there that are just experiencing this for the first time and will want to check them out.

Finally caught up on this thread. I am so glad that they're back! Even as my second least favorite side project (sorry Dead Mermaids) I loved Money Money 2020. Also glad that they're keeping up the act of not being The Network. Just when I was getting worried that GDC was starting to get way too quiet.. I can't wait for more!!!

It’s cool that 2020 the year of the Network’s return (according to the ancient prophecy, definitely not a random year they made up in 2003) is also a time of a general resurgence of popularity of new wave. It’s mostly serious darkwave “emo” bands like Molchat Doma, but still, The Network called it that there’ll be doomers looking for post punk synths to listen to :P

I was thinking this too, that as usual Green Day were ahead of the trend. They got successful playing punk when it wasn’t popular, did a rock opera concept album when no one had done one in years and album sales were declining, and jumped on the 80’s new wave trend years before it was cool.  The Network would have been really popular if it had just emerged today, but of course that’s not Green Day’s style. They set the trend they don’t follow it.

Maybe I'm skeptic for other reasons that have nothing to do with this, but I don't believe it.

HoLy ShIt  I was wrong!!!

I shouldn't be surprised with Green Day I mean The Network. They appeared out of nowhere, disappeared in the middle of nowhere and now reappear, when we're all standing nowhere. When the world pandemic started I remember thinking - "Money Money 2020 & Disease Is Punishment" - all happening in the same year. It was like a fucking phophecy! And now here they are!

(PS. I'm the one person who wants them to admit it is them, but I guess it's all part of the game and I can't be more glad that they're releasing new music under this weird, crazy side project) And they even got together to do that crappy recording...  I love them so fucking much ❤️

It will be interesting what comes out of this. Network’s sound is currently more a lot more trendy than whatever they were trying to do on FOAM.

Someone on YT posted something interesting (don't know if it was posted yet):

"To paraphrase, it said that a friend at Warner sent them (the person that runs this channel) this track. The boys were in the studio in February recording new network tracks. But the release date shown at the end (20th October, 2020) wasn't accurate because of delays due to Covid, and may be pushed to January 2021. "Get ready!" "

So this seems to prove Billie's meaning behind "we got enough material and could drop another album later this year" (or something like that...too lazy to search for the interview)

Finally got round to listening to both tracks all the way through. The Ultimate Test is pretty good, although a bit too long for my liking. It's The Prophecy that gets me though, I love the utter childishness and silliness  I live for silly green day tbh, I feel like I could take or leave the music at this point, but the crazy antics and trolling is what always keeps me coming back lmao 😂

I think the lyrics could also be interpreted about being about Trump/the election. First verse= the White House/losing the election. Chorus=sanity/what happens next.  Second verse= before Trump was president.

Sure, Billie said he would never write a song about Trump, but that doesn't mean Fink wouldn't. ;)

yeah, this was the original description on the upload of Ultimate Test, before the channel turned into the chuch acct. we were talking about that earlier when speculating if this was always planned or a result of quarantine
