Are Green Day A Right Wing Or Left Wing Band?

I have to disagree with this. You’re basically saying ‘there is no right or left wing, and it’s all open to interpretation’, and that’s not true!

You’re right in that there are extremes on both sides, but there are clear cut differences between the right and left. The problem is that the average person has lost sight of what they are! You can’t get on a microphone and say ‘Don’t let these politician bastards dictate your lives’ and ‘Freeeeedom’ and claim to be left wing (a state controlled existence) because it’s a complete contradiction.

Regardless of what you believe about China, it is a left wing country. Their entire existence and contributions are for the greater good of China, not for their own individual liberties (right-wing ideology). They don’t believe in private property ownership the way we do, and don’t share in the freedoms of things like the internet like we do. You can be arrested for talking badly about the country and their leadership.

Mmmm no that’s not what I am saying.
Left wing has its roots, and right wing has its own. Contemporary western European left wing has roots that stems from Marxism, labourism, as well as libertarian thinking (that goes all the way towards liberist capitalist thinking). European right wing has roots in fascism as well as conservative capitalism.
Saying that being against authoritarian policies (like the one you are mentioning) is in principle against a left wing ideology is just wrong. Being left wing has nothing to do with being in favor of authoritarian policies. If you assume that left wing=Stalinism you are absolutely wrong, from a historical, political and academic perspective. It would be as saying that a conservative liberist and a nazi belong to the same ideology. And about China being a left wing State, Chinese communism has nothing to do with Marxism, and if you read Marx that’s pretty clear. Chinese history, politics and idea of State has very little to share with the western one, and putting the Chinese communist party in a box together with the American Democratic Party or Billie Joe’s view of the world is impossible.

Wow! The misconception is real!

My girl is from China been here in the US for 3 years she says “you’re an idiot and should stop reading alt right material”

but hey maybe a woman who was born and raised in China for 41 years doesn’t know anything about her country

oh by the way her parents own 4 houses there and bunch of land but wait you said that’s not possible how can that be? Unless you are wrong🤔

“To be governed is to be watched over, inspected, spied on, directed, legislated at, regulated, docketed, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, assessed, weighed, censored, ordered about, by men who have neither the right, nor the knowledge, nor the virtue.”

This is a quote from a pretty left wing guy that died 40 years before the Chinese communist party was even founded, western political thinking is made by western political history, not by the absurdity degenerated by western colonialism in Asia :P

The stereotype that the left-wing is anti-free speech is completely inaccurate. In fact, I think the right wing are just as guilty of being anti-free speech, if not more. Remember when Trump recently said that anyone who burns the American flag should be imprisoned for a year.

I also don't get the view that supporting gay rights and the legalization of drugs isn't left-wing, I see far more leftists advocating for those things than right wingers who more often than not actively fight against those things

No disrespect but I don't think you know anything about left-wing politics and you seem to think "China" and "Russia" are representative of left-wing politics generally when that couldn't be further from the truth. I think you're just a right winger who likes Green Day but are kinda butthurt that they call out the right

I can’t wait for the days we can get rid of these parties when people wake up and realize these parties the left vs right are only here to distract us from what the powers that be are really up to will be a great day...

Now, I understand there are people reading this that are like.. “what are you talking about? Of course Green Day is a left-wing band! Billie Joe himself supports the swing left cause!” So, please hear me out on this and why I’m asking this question...

I’m sure like most of you, I’ve been following Green Day for many years.. and as many of you know, Billie can get pretty political on the 🎙 during their set, specifically when they get to songs like holiday. However, saying things like “This song is a big fuck you to all the politicians” and “Don’t let these bastards dictate your lives” is supporting a Right-Wing message, not Left-Wing.

Also, when it comes to freedom of speech, and censorship, Green Day have always been very vocal in their support for saying what you want and standing up for what you believe in! That is NOT traditionally left-wing. Left-wing countries like China and Russia are opposed to most free-speech and human rights!

There is no doubt Billie and the band have supported progressive taxation and universal health care (government sponsored healthcare), but aside from that, their positions have seemingly been more right-wing and libertarian (supporters of certain drugs being legalized, and gay rights) in my view.

I’m not too sure where they stand on abortion rights, that’s one area I don’t remember hearing any opinions from them, but all in all, I’d say they are a ‘moderately right’ band.

I know they are adamant about helping get rid of Donald Trump, but I don’t think that’s a big testament to their true beliefs.. just trying to get a degenerate out of the White House!

The lesson to be learned from this post: take a yardstick and mark the 18-inch line. That's your "true centrist" position. Go out to the far left edge and write in "communism/Nazism", then go to the far right and write it, "fascism/Nazism". There are you two endpoints.  Now, go back to that 18-inch line. Go half and inch to the left and write in: "American left-wing". Then go back to 18 and slide an additional 0.5" to the right and write, "American right-wing".

Now can we all stop talking about wings and radicalization in American politics? 90% of us are less than an inch apart.

I'm Chinese, it's pretty interesting to  see  this thread😀I think Larry Livermore had? been to China, his point of view of China is more believable imo.

As we buy houses, we don't own them but can use them for 70 years.

As someone who is Chinese, and more knowledgeable of the political spectrum, would you say China is a far left country?

And a Green Day fan, would you say they represent more left-wing, or right wing ideology?

I don't think I can say China is left or right, maybe somewhere in the middle, because communism is impossible(communism is left-wing, am I right?), so China had to change.

And as a a GD fan( in China there are so many GD fans), we feel related to the songs(especially Static Age). But I don't think I can believe what I saw on the television and news about USA, and what they said about your left or right-wing(We don't say left or right that much since 1950s).

Sorry about my poor English, hope you can understand me😂

That’s not at all what I said. I was providing political spectrum graphs showing why I thought Green Day would fit more right of center, then I was told they were BS, and called a troll, so I said I’ll just settle on that to avoid being insulted.

Then, a Chinese person who actually has insight into living in a ‘real’ left-wing country, and can actually contribute to a conversation instead of just but in with insults, pleasantly replied.. so I’m hoping they reply with their perspective, while trying patiently to tune people like you out!

So You admit you don't want to discuss with people who have different viewpoints with you? As I never called you a troll I've not insulted you in this thread so don't see how this comment applies to me as asking for a legitimate source isn't insulting as far as I'm aware of

A coworker told me something interesting.   She said her political stance has been unflinching her entire life (she's 40ish), and that in the past people considered her liberal, but now most consider her conservative.

So there has been a shift, it seems.

Personally, I don't keep up with politics at all.   I don't have time, what with all the nerd stuff I have going on.  GDA, metal detecting, reading, writing, painting, becoming a rock star, youtube phenomenon and novelist, researching science and religion, animals, aliens, guitars, etc.   Haha

I would say I am liberal about a lot of topics, while being conservative on others.
