I really don't want Butch to have any sort of impact similar to Feldman's with Blink. He's helped kill that band.

Pretty strange definition of kill you've got there m8

Last album not produced by Feldman, 155k album sales first week, Nine, 77k not including streams. The quality of their writing has fallen off a cliff and if you compare the last two blink albums to Goldfingers, also produced and helped written by Feldman they sound identical. He's killed that band and they're just a poppy husk now :( although this isn't the thread for that conversation

I was never a HUGE fan of blink outside of Untitled and Box Care Racer, but their new music is extremely cookie-cutter, unimaginative, and sounds like an album of all the same song. People seem to still love it though.

I'm a huge fan and like most of their discography.   Neighborhoods had some weak points and NINE is just awful.  Truly awful.  Everyone else likes it more than California because of the whoa oh oh issue, but I disagree.

For you to feel that strongly, it says something. You're always a positive guy lol.

Nine is miles more creative and interesting than California and Neighborhoods. I really like blink-182 but they've never been a "great" band, Untitled is probably their best effort at a record and it's not as amazing as people make it out to be. I'd listen to Nine over most of Neighborhoods and all of California all day. *shrug* That album at least feels like it has some passion in it. I don't think John Feldmann is the problem with blink, I think Mark Hoppus doesn't feel like changing how blink sounds and Matt and Travis just don't care because they do other shit that (I think, anyway, this is all just me speculating randomly lol) their heart is way more into

I know practically everybody here is gonna shit on me for this, and it's not really the thread, but oh well.

Beg you listen to the Feldmann produced Goldfinger tracks and then the stuff he did for blink. They're identical.

I just might give it a listen tonight and see if my feelings have changed.

Hey!

Butch Walker has a solo album coming out in May.

I previewed a couple tracks and it sounds alright.

I mean Travis reached out to Feldmann because they wanted his producing style, he did his job and it’s obviously the sound the band wants since they didn’t ditch him after Cali. And by the Butch thing I was talking about a lot of studio involment to push the band in different ways that you can’t when mostly exchanging files.

Tom being wishy washy killed Blink. And they've been a sad husk ever since. Neighborhoods was decent for a comeback, California is just awful and Nine is better in comparison, but it in no way holds up to something like Untitled or Enema of the State.

And top the topic on point, I'm very excited to hear Billie has written some new songs. Glad he's being creative during this time! It can be tough since what's going on is tough.

Untitled is truly a great album. So is Box Car Racer. Mark killed blink with his inability to progress, which you can hear on their new music.

I bet it won't happen. Billie still has ambitions, and things to say. Not counting how easy is to him write stuff. I see that relationship as feedback source to improve the songs. Nothing else. You don't see any writing credit to Walker, even if he played some things on FOAM.

I wish GD would tap into that AI/21CB detail again and just really work as hard as possible on perfectly a solid album. I feel like Billie is too ADHD for that now.

That definitely reflects on the latest album. There is no clear direction on FOAMF.

GD have never made the same album twice. The closest they have ever come to a sequel is 21CB, but even that has so many different elements to AI.

So thankfully it's unlikely FOAM 2 is on the horizon.

Billie has built on a sound twice though. You can see the similarities from the Trilogy through Longshot through FOAM. He's been trying to nail this power pop sound for nearly a decade. His Trilogy remixes add evidence to the idea that he's sort of obsessed with pinning it down. Now I think all these projects have had good moments. The Longshot record is excellent imo. I guess I'd just like them to get more complex in their writing again. The heart of GD is short songs with clever lyrics, but I want to see their talent shine. They don't have to remake an old album, but bring back the orchestra, new instruments, maybe cool solos, new effects, etc. It's their choice, of course, but it seems Billie has chosen "simple and fun" over "detailed and challenging."

Agreed, I don’t necessarily want another one of those albums, but they’ve got the potential to put something genuinely solid and timeless out.

Spot on. If they want to make simple records with no real substance that’s fine, it’s their career, but it’s a shame because they could definitely do so much more. This is why I’m negative about the band atm

Thats a fair comment, FOAM was certainly a challenge to listen to, so must've been one to write.

I’m inclined to agree with Joe, but at the same time, I think if Billie doesn’t have the big ambition anymore and all he wants is to have fun, that’s fair. I mean, I would love  if his songwriting was more challenging rather than so heavily inspired by music of the past, but at the same time, it’s okay. He might have saved this for when he’s older, but I don’t mind it, assuming he moves on again.

Yeah it’s completely fair and all, just seems a shame to me.

I couldn't agree with this more. I loved the Longshot album and I like FOAM, but I'm longing for something more complex and epic too. FOAM has those moments, Graffitia is giving me some serious 21CB vibes, but it sounds unfinished, like Billie wanted to create the sound, but stopped because he forced himself to stick to his "quick and dirty, long songs bore me" motto. But the vibe is definitely there, so I hope the spark that inspires him to do stuff like that is still in there somewhere. Butch Walker is releasing a rock opera this May, maybe it'll inspire Billie to try something more challenging too. One can dream.

A lot of FOAM songs had the ability to go to new places, and I agree with you that many felt unfinished for the sake of being short.
