Otis Big Guitar Mix EP!

Lazy Bones was my favorite of the three. Oh Love didn't feel that much different and Wild One felt... muddier? I definitely prefer the original. Lazy Bones was the only one that felt like it added new elements to the original.

I honestly like the new Oh Love mix. The bass is more audible, and the drums pack a punch like the Woodstock vinyl.

After a first listen, I have no idea why this exists. Lazy Bones is great, but was one of the few songs on the trilogy least in need of a remix. Wild One sounds flat and is an average song, but at least there are obvious changes. Oh Love is the same relatively boring song and is still too long.Β

Puzzling that these are the 3 trilogy songs chosen for this.Β

Here's my take.Β  I am totally cool with making the guitars louder because that was one of the biggest gripes folks mentioned from this triple album.Β  The way its going I bet the band feels the same way to a degree too.Β  My only thought though is since this is being released under reprise does that mean things are squared away with the band moving forward with them or what?Β  Hopefully they release more songs as well.Β  I really want to hear nuclear family, let yourself go, carpe diem, 8th street serenade....geez really every song if possible with louder guitars just to get an idea.Β  Because from hearing this, with fell for you, it sounds a hell of a lot better that's for sure.Β  One can only hope.

Is anyone else noticing a lot of mic feedback in Oh Love? I understand that it can beΒ an aesthetic decision, I just wanted to make sure I'm not crazy and it's actually there. Not on Billie's voice, but on the instruments I think. I'm no expert so it's hard to tell.

There's definitely a lot of feedback and I think its great. Part of the problem with the original songs is that they were too...Β what'sΒ the word...?

Polished? Overproduced? All makeup but none of that natural beauty?

You know what I mean, just overdone to the point where they were good songs musically, but became a bit bland and lifeless. These mixes give themΒ that edge that makes them feel more real, energetic and a little gritty, but in a good way.

Kind of like final studio versions of Demolicious and I'm diggin' it!

Yeah, I get what you mean. I don't really hear a lot of difference other than they sound "bigger" and richer, but it's enough to actually notice. There is a very Rotting-eque little guitar line in Wild One that I really like.

Only listened on pretty crappy earbuds so far and , to be fair, have not listened to the originals for quite a while now but these just feel brighter, rawer and more like GD in some way. Β I’m hearing bigger drums which is great and they just seem better, I’m with @RedΒ  IΒ feel the Originals were just too smooth in some way, all the guts had been knocked out of them. Β
Β

Also agree with @Virtuous XmanΒ in that I hope this means their new contract gives them freedom to do stuff like this whenever they want so that’s where part of the excitement is coming from forΒ me.

They sound pretty good, noticably heavier and I think the difference between the originals and these is greater than the different between the original and remixed Fell For You. My favorite upgrade is probably Wild One, love the added guitar parts a whole lot

Β

Revisiting a point made above, are they signed to a new contract with Reprise? They definitely seem to have a lot of freedom at the moment given Billie is releasing a cover every Monday, openly talking (to Zane Lowe) about having written more songs and releasing things like this

I listened to with some decent headphones and wow Oh Love blew me away, can't believe how good that sounded.

Lazy Bones was good but sounded really muddy to me, the high end stuff like cymbals sounded wishy washy and bad quality. Some of the bass and guitars were muddy.

Wild One was cool too but again kinda muddy. I don't wanna complain because I'm so glad we got these and hope we get more but they could do with another mix to fix the levels and balance.

Billie doing covers doesn’t really mean anything as Billie could always do those or even original music outside of Reprise as Billie is only signed to them as a group Billie as a solo artist could always do another label or indie (usually at least the common group contracts generally only holds them as group and not solo artists but there’s always exceptions)Β

The vocals in wild one are also rerecorded right? They sound differentΒ

Definitely, Oh Love and Lazy Bones have both their original vocals but Wild One has so much different vocals (especially after the solo), even if vocals are too loud it's noticeable.

As for these remixes, every song has their goods; Lazy Bones overall sounds just better, Wild One got new life with added lead guitar part + overall garage sound and I can finally appreciate bass in Oh Love, never heard it before.

Just beautiful, even though vocals are way too damn loud in Wild One and Oh Love wasn't that interesting but it's ok. Thanks Billie!

Loved this. ItΒ reminded me of how good these songs actually are, and how bad the production of that record was. All of the songs really benefit from this new mix,Β the difference is quite impressive in all of the three tracks.
I mean,Β I always liked Lazy Bones, but Wild One and Oh Love are really losing that flatness that IMHO heavily andΒ negatively impact most of the Trilogy songs. Really digging this.Β

TheΒ songs are so long tho πŸ˜„ I got used to the FOAM tracklist and seeing 13 minutes for three tracks shocked me πŸ˜‚

I think it sounds cool. Most likely you’re right it’s feedback.

I think Uno suffers the most from the trilogy production so it'dΒ be really cool to hear more songs from it.

Very true, but all these things are being put out via the band's offical channels, whereas in the past I imagine the covers may have gone out under the Longshot name. We've had 3 releases from the band in the last two weeks via their offical channels (the two covers and now this EP), which is far different from what has been the norm in past dydl3w. It's been spontaneous

On first listen Oh Love sounds the most improved. More grit and it definitely needed tightening up after the solo, going straight into the "oh love". My complaint with that song was always that it was too long and repetitive when it didn't need to be, especially for a lead single. This is a definite improvement.

Wild One also sounded better.

Lazy Bones sounded good too. I'm not sure that one really needed a mix though.Β

I'd love to hear more of these mixes. Some that could definitely be improved with a less polished sound would be Carpe Diem, Rusty James and Makeout Party. I'm sure when Billie posted about these mixesΒ years ago he hash tagged a few songs. Does anyone remember which ones? I seem to remember Missing You.

On a side note, it's awesome to see the trilogy hasn't been forgotten. This is the next best thing after playing them live.

I’m pleasantly surprised that he chose to remix Lazy Bones. In the past it’s seeemed Billie didn’t want to go back to this song saying it’s too depressing to think about. Maybe it could make its way into the Longshot setlist.

Well this EP would be Reprise even if they are off of the label since Reprise owns the songsΒ

I think until we get an actual release of new GD music or they say in a interview we won’t know if they stayed with Reprise or notΒ
