No Fun Mondays

It's cool to see them use so much Trilogy footage because it feels like they're acknowledging the era even though it was a dark time. There's a lot of good in the era, but of course, it's overshadowed by Billie's rehab stint, so it's cool to see them highlight the good that came from it.

Looks like the performance of ITWAN on Corden has nearly twice as many views as Oh Yeah had on the same show. Unless I'm forgetting something, it looks like it has more than any late night FOAM performance.

Yeah. It was uh.. terrible. I mean what person would watch it more than once off their own accord?

I watched twice - the second time was to show someone how horrible it was

Billie Joe is supplying us with music as we navigate the awesomeness that is 2020.   Loads of other artists are doing these 'at home' sessions and it's pretty rad.   But I miss ALBUMS.

And I understand the album delays.  But perhaps some artists could do 'interim albums'.   Something that doesn't need a ton of promotion, just music for fans to listen to and enjoy, that's it.     I'm talking about new material, but it could be compiled b-sides, acoustic, or even live if they can't make new recordings happen.     This could give the artists a chance to do something completely artistic and not worry about if it sells or not.   or if they felt like it, make it as commercial as possible and see how it does with the current promotion possibilities.

The arguments are that they would lose money.   Nope.  I am poor and have recorded over 20 albums at my house.  You can literally record an entire album for free.   It's pretty easy.

The music industry is drifting away from albums in favor of singles again, and I understand that too.    It seems like the pandemic may speed that process up.

The argument is artists won’t EARN money. You may have recorded albums for free at home but did you make a living from doing it?  Most artists need to tour to earn a living and releasing an album without touring is essentially giving their product and earning potential away for free with the way revenue is structured now with streaming. Some that are already wealthy can afford to do that in the short term and so do it to keep their fans engaged but current small and medium sized bands can’t so while they can make music now they are waiting on releasing it until they can tour to promote it and get back to earning.

I know of a few bands already that have delayed their upcoming album releases for when they can tour again.  Seems we can’t have one without the other if we want these bands to be able to eat and pay their rents.

I totally agree that the working class bands (which are the majority of bands) need money to survive.  If they aren't getting paid, that sucks. They're not getting paid either way.   But if your passion is making music, you can cheaply record something for your own personal satisfaction of making it, and then share it with the world while you're sitting at home, not getting paid.  This doesn't negatively effect your band, career, etc.    But I do understand if they feel what they recorded could be of great monetary value.   Then they should hold on it when it could reach the most people, and pay them the best.   Sure.

So this is a fairy tale. Albums are not free to make. Sure some people may be able to record multiple albums on a budget of less than $2000 but the quality is always shit. It's not even with the charm of old Lookout stuff it's literally Audacity tin can mix.

I've made 2 albums and if you include the total cost of equipment, computers, software and accessories we're over $10,000. However, with the system I have set up that $10,000 can stretch for years and I am currently writing and recording about 30+ songs and working on another project of about 12-14 songs. I'll go on to write another 45 sometime after that all within that budget. It's not a pro mix or master but it's not tin can audacity. It's somewhere near Kerplunk but it's good enough for me.

In a major label pro setting there are pro producers, pro engineers, higher level gear that costs more. Has there been a major cost-reduction in the operations of recording an album? Yes! Have professionals become more agile and has technology improved productivity and created a more dynamic recording environment? Yes! But no, it is not free. Sales are down, costs have reduced with it. Margins are still non-existent.

21cb was the last they recorded at Oceanway and they never went that route again. It wasn't worth it they sold a little over a million copies. That was probably the break-even point. @WhiteTim might have some insight on that.
