Oh god Billie Armstrong?!

That's how he's listed in his yearbook too.

Must have been something he was trying out.  He went by Bill and BJ a lot in those days so I think he was fighting it. He told that story once where he asked his mom if she could just call him Billie and she was like “No. You’re Billie Joe” 😄 He had to grow to like it.

Maybe it sounds way too cute when you’re trying to look cool, but it’s an original name so he can’t really complain - there’s a hundred of Bills but how many Billie Joes do you know

except for BJA and this guy

Just saw an IG ad and a bunch more artists have been added to this (he’s definitely only doing one song) including Dave Grohl. I’m offended that it just says Dave Grohl but it still says Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day 😖

I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing that he’s not an A list celebrity. There’s a lot of bs that comes with that and I think it’s for the better that it’s the music that’s known rather than him.

I totally agree. It must give him more freedom and piece of mind. It also feels more special because I feel like he knows the majority of fans who care about him are very genuine. Not "OMG a FaMouS PerSOn!"

Right? I agree as well, plus he seems way more down to earth than those a lists celebs. I don't mean this in a bad way, but he seems like a regular person compared to those stuck up A listers😝😊

He's so kindhearted and humble. He's legit like one of the nicest people out there. Like every single fan report of interacting with him is that he's just the sweetest.

Yes, it seems he’s able to be out in public relatively normally without getting overwhelmed, which is probably better than causing riots wherever you go. :P And yeah, the cosy small fandom is cool too

You are all correct of course. I just want to see him have every success he deserves, but there’s not necessarily any advantage to it and he likely doesn’t even care or even wants his name to appear that way.

I agree with you on this though. I have a feeling he’s underappreciated as a songwriter/GD as a band, so obvously I’m happy when he gets the credit he deserves.

All I want is for Green Day to stop being a “guilty pleasure” band because they’re genuinely great and that’s it.

You know, I don’t want to get all edgy, but I’m convinced that if they went for a different aesthetic or generally targeted their music to a bit different audience, they’d get a whole different level of recognition. I mean, I don’t think Foo Fighters are any more impressive musically, but they seem to be taken more seriously to give an example.

The large teen girl fanbase has hurt Green Day's reputation. That's sadly what happens when tons of screaming girls love any band. Beatles were even disliked early on because of this.

Exactly. Except that the problem isn’t the teenage girls themselves but misogyny.

I’d guess eyeliner didn’t help either. Too queer for a male snobbish music fan.

Eh...I can't stand the fangirls either. Not because they are women, but because of how obsessive they are.

You can dislike whoever you don’t like, of course, but that shouldn’t influence the way the music itself is perceived. I mean, I doubt people whose reasoning is “young girls like this so it must be lame” have an actual reason to dislike fangirls.

I just want them to be themselves and if that’s a cartoon pop punk band with a slightly queer aesthetic that attracts a lot of young girls then so be it. Truth is, they started out writing songs about crushes and Billie was so puppy dog boy band cute they attracted teenage girl fans way back at Gilman Street and were relentlessly mocked for it.  (Thus the girl on the front of the Kerplunk cover and Laurie L story)

This is nothing new, but it’s who they are and they shouldn’t try to change it. It’s also the same formula that has enabled them to maintain a fanbase of such diversity in age to this day. Not many thirty year old bands still attract kids and teens to their shows.  It’s a strength.

Is that really where the cover art idea came from?

Yes.  She's not a punk girl, she's supposed to look like the cute suburban girls that were coming into Berkeley for the first time following Green Day.

That’s also true. GD’s audience is largely consists of teenagers and people in their 20s while their peers don’t have that as much if at all.

Plus I guess there’s no way to fight it if Billie can spit up and then catch it, lick phone screens or talk about that one time he got lice from dumpster pants and still be considered cute, there’s nothing he can do. How gross would he have to be to break the spell?
