Arena vs Stadium Tours

Hi folks,

Me and my girlfriend are off to see the boys play at BankWest Stadium in Sydney. It is our first GD concert. However, someone I know told me that stadium concerts are trash, as the sound is poor and you can't see a damn thing. He said that I just wasted my money as arena shows are where it's at.

As I have never been to a music concert in my life, I don't know if he is full of crap or if it is true. What have your GD experiences been like in stadiums vs arenas? Me and GF are in the front row of the stadium stands at ground level (GF hates mosh pits/standing room so we bought seats). These were the most expensive seats (cost me and arm and a leg) so I bloody well hope the cost was worth it.

What are your thoughts GD fans?

Emirates Stadium in London was terribly organised but one of the best! However, in general, I'd say your friend is right about arenas being better. Only my opinion though.

Not a lot we can do about it.  I did consider missing Hella Mega if Brisbane didn't get a date but I knew I would regret it knowing the guys were in OZ.

About every show on the Tour is a stadium I think so yeah, no choice :(

Stadium shows aren't trash at all. When standing you're probably not going to be as close as you would be in an arena show but because the stage is so large/wide there's actually a larger area near-ish to the stage so as long as you arrive reasonably early you should be able to see ok. They also usually have big screens to help, and of course if you're up in seats that aren't super far back you'll be able to see fine. When I saw them at Wembley Stadium it was amazing, being outdoors in a big stadium seemed to create a special atmosphere where people were less obsessed with holding their spot etc and more happy to just enjoy the show, it felt like a really special event. And I think the band appreciate that they're playing for such a huge crowd, you can tell they're loving it and they perform accordingly. If anyone can make an entire stadium of people feel engaged with a show it's Billie.

You have the tickets already so don't worry about it, it's going to be great! You don't have to be super close with the best sound ever for seeing the band in the flesh and hearing them play the songs live to be awesome (although I never noticed anything wrong with the sound anyway).

Green Day shows are always worth it! They're as great in stadiums as they are in clubs, if not better because they adapt to the scale of the event. My main issue with stadiums is that they're generally terribly organised when it comes to lining up, but since you're seated, that won't be a problem. Sounds like you'll be quite close with the expensive seats too. You'll have a fab time!

For real! Every sized Green Day show has its pros and cons but they're all great in their own way. I had to just watch this because this thread got me thinking of how awesome the Wembley show was:

The atmosphere at stadium shows is amazing

Stadiums are definitely my least favourite venue to see a band, terrible organisation and being further from the stage is annoying. But a gigs a gig, they'll still put on a good show and it'll still be a lot better than not seeing them at all!

Don’t sweat it, you’ll have a great time.  Stadiums may not be your first choice but it’ll still be great.

I think stadium is better🤔 (correct me if I'm wrong) but stadium means outside show? Because when I saw them the 2nd time on the RevRad tour I went to an outside show I was 2nd in the pit it was so surreal being THAT close to Billie, Mike and Tre!! But the only drawback was, I had a hard time (as did other people I asked there I was standing next to) to hear Billie's voice, his guitar, Tre's drums. All I could really hear was Mike's bass don't get me wrong I love his bass tho...

Stadiums are the only venue where I’ll consider skipping even my favorite bands unless I think it’ll be ages before I get them in another venue. You’re almost guaranteed to be further away. If it’s a ballpark there will literally be no good seats. And as @The_real_st_jimmy just said, the sound goes up and out rather than to the crowd. I wear ear plugs at every show but I sometimes don’t even need them for outdoor shows. Never a good sign for sound quality.

Green Day did everything they could to keep me from buying tickets to Hella Mega haha. Other than adding the interrupters and instilling fear that they’ll take years off again after this, so I bought em anyway.

small club > mid sized club > arena > stadium

I’ve seen Green Day in everything from a 750 person club (really!) to some 1,500-3,000 clubs and 65,000 stadium shows and lots of 15,000-20,000 arena shows in between.

They’re all amazing- they’re one of the best live bands of our generation and they know how to perform any type of venue. I’d go see them play  on the surface of the moon if needed; they couldn’t play a bad show anywhere. Even though I’ve seen them in super small venues I’ve also had a great time at huge shows.

Enjoy!

Yeah I prefer arenas. I really hate this whole stadium tour they want to do. It'll still be an awesome time because no matter the size Green day always gives it their all but I try to stay away from stadium shows because of shit seats and terrible sound. Plus at least in my case, they always come at peak summer. I do not want to sit outside in a baseball stadium sweating just waiting for the band to come on.

Me too
I also don't like crowded festival with lots of band (Unless you have like at least 4/5 band you like) where you have to stay under the sun the whole day
I've seen Green Day with All Time Low, with Rancid and it was perfect. (Actually in Monza 2017 there were more bands before Rancid but I entered the arena late lol)

Also, I prefer "small" venue, such as Milano Assago Forum, or squares.
I went to Lucca 2017 and Locarno 2013 and both concert felt so intimate

I’ve been to both many times and have enjoyed both, however the sound quality in an indoor arena is far superior. That doesn’t mean stadium shows are bad just that arena tours are a better experience.

Do they put screens for people who are really far from the stage in baseball stadium?

I remember in 2009 in Montreal it was outside and I was fucking far. And no screen.

I have only ever been to one Stadium show and that was for Foo Fighters and ANZ stadium in Sydney. It was seated and very far back from the stage, but I don't recall any issues with sound at all, in fact I thought it was great!

For Green Day though, yeah I would prefer to just keep doing arenas because arenas = less people to deal with but hey, seeing GD in a stadium show is on my bucketlist, so why the hell not?

I personally hate stadium shows but if this is your first time seeing Green Day you will love it either way.

If they cancel the Hella Mega because of the virus and they organise only a Green Day indoor arena tour this winter I would be way more excited 😂

After BST I'm never going to a festival just for the headliner ever again. Reading is testing me with RATM
