I definitely recognized The Clash in that song and after listening to Brankrobber, that's definitely it. However, I was a drummer for a Social D tribute band for half a decade and that was the first thing that came to mind. That's rock n' roll though. Everything gets recycled and all that is old becomes new again.

Totally agree with this, and I think Billie and the band are very self conscious about this. They even made a sample to prove that point :D

The one critique that always annoys me, is when they do a song about being young, reviewers complain about middle aged men doing that, but then if they do a song like Outlaws, looking back at/reflecting upon their youth, reviewers will complain about that, saying young people can't relate.

Agree. Plenty of bands and artists WAY older than GD are putting out new music. The freakin' Who just put out a new album. The Rolling Stones put out new material periodically. Metallica is older than them. Their contemporaries are older than they are. Dave Grohl and Rivers Cuomo? Older than Billie Joe. Old bands put out new albums all the time. Any arguments against it is moot.

This too! It's so annoying. I kind of get what they're saying, but it's also like they're writers. They're not saying they're still teens or have the same problems they used to, but they're writing from that point of view and it's based on their own young experience more than anything.

Genuinely prefer this to revolution radio in almost every possible way.
It’s much more nuanced, and it makes sense for a band in their 40s now.

Also, Graffitia is one of the best songs Billie has written

People are going to sleep on this record and skip it due to the singles.

But god damn

So they're releasing single in song order on the album? Next one IWATT?

Please let me know if this is not allowed/feel free to remove this post.

I uploaded my reaction/review to a (very new) youtube channel, where I go through each track and give my opinion / thoughts on hearing these songs for the first time. Would love to hear if you agree/disagree with certain things. Again, I’m very new at this, and probably suck at conveying my thoughts, but hey, it’s not about me, but the music.

If this isn’t cool, when I’m home from work tn/tomorrow I’ll rewrite my thoughts in the forum!

Can I say it? I dont like it. Theres a few tracks that are okay at best in my opinion. Alt Arena Rock, overproduced to hell. I dunno. I  want to like it. I really fucking do. But i dont get it. Stab You In The Heart is a standout for me, and I will admit i fucking love Mikes bass on this. But at the end of the day it sounds like the same shit you hear on indie rock stations, not the GD  im familiar with. Maybe if it was a FBHT album id feel a bit differently about it. Whatever, ill give it a few more  shots and I still love the boys.

Oh and i saw people commenting that Stab You In The Heart sounds like Hippy Dippy Shake but my first thought was Jailhouse Rock by Elvis. Same riff.

Ok so Junkies.

I gotta be honest, my first listen-through of the album, I had either neutral to mildly positive feelings towards pretty much all the songs... except Junkies. Christ, that song kills me.

Let's start with that distorted intro. It's not exactly an atypical thing for green day to do, but I just feel like it's so haunting on this track. Like, I can see this instrumentation in a closing song of a young punk band's show in a small bar full of people that are just a bit melancholy. It gives me such a clear image of that-- starting with the nostalgic opening verse.

"My mama said to me/you're gonna have your enemies/Don't beg, don't follow/I've heard it all before/I smashed my fingers in the door/My downward spiral, oh yeah"

It's so vivid and emotional... really juxtaposes the positives and negatives of everyday life.

I also find the instrumentation really comforting, too. The strong guitar and bass feels weirdly lonely and warm to me, and just completely makes me visualize like sitting on a porch alone on a warm summer night.

Idk man. This song? Frickin incredible.

Does this sound like drunk ramblings? Probably.

With all the spelling errors in this booklet I was surprised it didn't say Billy tbh.

I didn‘t notice even one, where are they? 😅

The older i get, the more i realise people want to put Green Day in a box so bad and get American Idiot or Dookie over and over agin. As soon as they try something new, its like "ugh this doesn't sound like Green day" like its a bad thing.

I dunno, i just think its great when they redefine what people think of them and people can't handle it because the sound doesn't fit in the box theyve put the band in.

Thank you.
But I'm sure that even  if they do American Idiot 2, people will still complain

The only thing I don't get about the "it doesn't sound like Green Day" complaints is that it usually does. They're not that experimental.

My final thought about this record is that I'm happy that BJ and co treat Green Day as an escape for their creativity instead of an institution. That was the only concern that RevRad left on me and it's completely erased.

Long live to Green Day.
