Father of all Motherfuckers - What are your thoughts on the new album?

As I waited in line at Target, I got self conscious about the album cover.   I wondered if I would get ID'd for it (I didn't).

Then, a family got in line behind me and as the guy put the divider on the register, I flipped the CD over so his family wouldn't see the vulgar title (and stupid vomiting unicorn).   The cashier was a young guy, who showed no recognition as he rang up the cd.

I felt like an outdated turd buying a cd, and thought about whether I was being pretentious buying an old outdated thing.   Deep thoughts.   Deep thoughts.

Are CDS cool because they aren't cool?   Are they punk rock?   Are they evil?   Are they good?   Are they real?

Dude, CDs are totally cool :D

Also, that was nice of you to flip the CD over. Because of my rebellious streak I would probably make the album easier for the family to spot

There are some strange, very questionable items over at the official Green Day store.

Drug Paraphernalia?   Wow.

Car Air Freshener?   OH YEAH.   That's where I'm at in life right now.   But what does vomiting unicorn smell like?   Good?

I went because I want that FOA Dark Roast coffee, but I don't want any stupid shit to go with it.   Just mountains of coffee to drink.

Smells and Coffees.

No drugs, thanks.

I need a new air freshener my car smells like greasy burgers from the drive thru

I totally get that the album's theme of escapism might not work for everyone, but in my case, I totally get the feeling of wanting to shut down everything and just letting go. In October, I wrote a post in here about how the riots the sparked a whole social emancipatory movement in Chile allowed me to connect to Revolution Radio in ways I couldn't before, and how it perfectly described my experience being part of the protests at the time. But 3 months later, I'm so emotionally drained, I literally have no idea what's gonna happen to my country and if we're ever getting out of this social collapse, and because I actively work with social organizations and universities, sometimes I desperately need to turn on some music really loud and forget for a while.

And in that sense, I think this album embodies perfectly what escapism is about, cause the way I see it, escapism is not just about detaching and successfully dissociating from the social climate, it also involves a certain self-awareness that the reason why you're running away is because you care too much, and I think the lyrics in this album perfectly contextualize this menacing darkness that lurks from the shadows and eventually swallows you up until you become comfortable in that state of emotional vacancy.

Because the thing is, everywhere you look in my country, there's graffiti paintings of victims, protests slogans, destroyed monuments, fire barricades and it's messy, and ugly and totally not what people envision when they think of "the most developed country in Latin America", but we've started to see the beauty in it and it's already becoming part of our cities. And yeah, sometimes shit is so heavy that you can find people dancing to latin trap and spray painting stupid memes in the middle of protests, because you just gotta cope in some way. It's the reason why I can also identify with the aesthetics of this era, 'cause I think there is beauty in the grittiness, absurdity and irreverence of the modern world. So in a way, I think this album manages to be personal in the way that opens up about its vulnerabilities (good and bad) and allows itself to be chaotic without taking itself too seriously, because there's literally nothing to make sense of.

It's funny, because I think a really negative review really nailed the album's spirit when they described it as a "party that no one except the person throwing it is at, and they're sitting there surrounded by balloons and streamers and a bowl of sad, warm punch while upbeat music plays for no one", 'cause really, I don't think this album is really trying to sell the idea of having a total blast, it's pretty evidently just smoke and mirrors, but sometimes when your world is literally on fire, you just really need a good pity party.

So yeah, this was a very long winded (and probably overly personal) response, but I hope it made sense and helped people understand this point of view, which I think is something Billie experiences in some degree too, judging from how attuned he is with his emotions and his characteristic political involvement.

I think you nailed it. While I can't relate exactly what you're going through, how you described the record is how I feel about it. The last year and a half has been utter shit. And I stayed away from music because it made me think of what I was going through. But here's an album that's just fun and it's not trying to pretend like the bad things aren't happening. It knows. But it's saying let's take a moment and dance, get a break from all the bad things and it's just really connecting with me.

I'm going to cave and buy the dark roast bundle, which isn't a bad deal I guess.   Coffee, Coffee cup and a digital download.

I mean Warning is one of my favorites even though it’s more experimental and I still think this album is B-side quality. To me, it very literally sounds like the B-sides they’ve put

I love American Idiot, but I don’t expect all of their albums to be like that. But I do expect to like more than three songs on a 26-minute album. I usually only find one or two songs to sound like filler. The whole first half sounds like filler to me this time.

You pretty much summed up my exact same feelings.

(Because seriously, people need to be into this at Hella Mega. These are dance songs and I don't wanna have to dance next to hundreds of bored statues 😜)

If they even play anything besides FOAM and Oh Yeah on the tour.... smh, the best tracks always go unplayed... Too Dumb To Die, I am looking at you :P

I really hope we hear Sugar Youth and Graffitia live. My two favorite tracks from FOAM.

They better! I'm afraid the lukewarm reaction to the singles is going to make them afraid to play the new songs. Just watching the iheart stream tonight, it seemed like they were relieved to be in the second half of the set and be past them. And I don't for a second thing it's because they don't love them, they just seem to need that crowd validation for a song to stay in the set.

Well if the boys in GD are on GDC and are reading these threads, then guys, please play Sugar Youth and Graffitia and PLEASE play Take the Money and Crawl.

FOAM may not be their Magnum Opus (by definition as greatest work of art) but it has its own solidity, arc, and of course a couple bangers.

I don't think anyone's really saying that, but people that don't like it say that really from what I've seen. Like this isn't good enough to be green day music. And real green day fans shouldn't like it. So, for the most part it's just annoying. It's fine to be disappointed or want more from the band, but try and be objective about your reviews. Don't just say because this sounds a little more pop or rock or whatever, that it's bad. That's not really being objective

Being objective about music, movies and art is practically impossibile

Emotions are too important and can't be left aside.

My opinion is that this all sounds so old and nor lasers, chops and fxs will make it sound fresh. They chose to repropose r'n'roll and it's fine but at least do some innovation, like one republic did with blues on "love runs out" for instance.

I had the feeling that there was too much re use of lyric, melodic lines and riffs

I expected something newer and got disappointed, lyric were unrelatable for me and I didn't find the songs so inspired for these reasons that's why for me this is a demolicious 2 with production.

I'm not asking for AI part 2 or 21stCB part 2 but that was the time where they had their peak of sound and became distinguishable, here I didn't hear nothing distinguishable.

I'm glad for people who like it because it's fun that is what the band claimed wanted it to be but it's just not for me

For me fun isn't enough on a record

@RisingRedWolf I know we are now way off topic but BJ sang All by myself as well - or did I dream that.

Oh wow I honestly don't even remember, but he may have teased us with a line or two, we were really spoiled that entire show with all the rare songs haha. I hope they do something like that again this time!

I had really low expectations going in because I wasn't a big fan of Fire Ready Aim (still one of my least favorites) or Oh Yeah (which is growing on me), though I love the title track. Was pleasantly surprised that I really, really enjoy this album all the way through. It's an absolute blast of energy, and it's really cool to hear them trying different things again after the admittedly safe RR (which I still think is better than this album, for the record). Outside of the singles, Meet Me on the Roof is an incredibly catchy song that I could easily see being a single (and it seems that it will since they released the video today), I Was a Teenage Teenager sounds like a Weezer song, but a good one, Stab You in the Heart and Sugar Youth rule, and Graffitia is one of the coolest songs they've made in a long time. Junkies on a High and Take the Money and Crawl are pretty cool but still have to grow on me, but I don't dislike either of them at all.

I knew this album was going to be super divisive so I'm really glad I fall on the side that really enjoys it. It's a really cool detour in their discography, I've been wanting them to try something new for a while now and I'm very satisfied with the results. I highly doubt this is the sound they'll be sticking with from now on lol. Would actually be really cool for them to put out their punkiest album ever right after this, would love to hear that

Billie also said that they left seven songs off the album because they didn't fit the vibe but they will all come out, I wonder if we'll get another EP before the tour. Really hope so

2020: the year where many fans here discovered they are fans of Foxboro Hot tubs, being crazy with their new EP, a band that has some good albums as a side project called Green Day.
