The US punk legends return with typically uncompromising album Father Of All Motherf***ers today. And the trio’s drummer Tré Cool reckons they are only just getting going. “It’s great because we still challenge each other,” he explained. “After so many years of doing this, most groups might lack inspiration. “But that’s not the case with us. Billie (Joe Armstrong) and Mike (Dirnt) have been my best friends since I was a kid and the three of us are still inseparable. “Our private lives may have taken different directions, but our friendship is still intact and nothing will ever ruin that.” After producing previous album Revolution Radio themselves, this time they brought in Butch Walker behind the desk. “It’s important to have somebody from outside the group to give you their honest opinion. “When we produce ourselves, we don’t know when to give up on an idea.” The end result is their most direct work in some time – ten bangers, no messing. Tré agreed: “We wanted to be head-banging to these songs. This was so different to say American Idiot, which was complex, more cerebral. “There’s no bulls**t. Certain records are like exotic cocktails, – they take time to make. Others are like a shot of whiskey – this is one of those, it’s 10 shots of Tennessee bourbon.” This marks the start of a busy period for the band. “There’s lot of secret projects that I can’t talk about,” Tré spilled. “Green Day will be very busy for the next few years. We have even started writing new music.” Next they embark on the Hella Mega Tour with Weezer and Fall Out Boy this summer visiting UK stadiums. Tré teased: “It will be more spectacular than just three guys in front of a black curtain!” Over the years Green Day have been vocal opponents of President Trump, so is the new album title a dig at him? “It’s open to interpretation,” Tré said diplomatically. “It was Billie’s idea – that guy is a machine for punch lines. “We are all in this chaos which is why it’s important, more than ever, to have rock’n’roll.” Amen to that.
