I was sick for the entire month of December. It was the worst virus I’ve ever had, so I wasn’t doing much of anything. Between that, spending a lot of time fixing up the new house and not being thrilled about the new music, I was unintentionally putting GDC on the back burner.

But then this song got stuck in my head. :P

Well, my rock station will NOT be playing Oh Yeah.

They do a "Smash or Trash" for new songs and this one got 89% trash.

:(

Come on, people. You have to get on board with this.

it's the future, and it will leave you behind if you jump on board about 2 seconds ago.   Jump!  Come with uuuuuuussssssss!

Yeah

That's literally so typical for parts of the alternative community though. You don't have to like the new song, but if you automatically dismiss everything that was released after 2005, you'll never broaden your horizon. That's the people who'd point at literally every big rock band and be like "their new music sucks, I'd rather listen to the stuff they released in the 90's". Great 😄

Rock station or alternative station? I can see it falling flat on the former and doing well on the latter.

Rock station.   It's called New Rock 93.3 the Planet.

I'll have to look into the local alternative station (if it's still around) and see what people over there think.

EDIT:   unfortunately the alt. station doesn't have a very good website, so I can't tell what songs are on their rotation.   but lucky for me, they did have a great upcoming events section and now I'm planning to see Barenaked Ladies and Toad the Wet Sprocket in July!    WOO HOO!  and while I know those aren't the sexiest bands (despite their names, muhuhaha) nowadays, the prices and...

get this.....

at one point in time, Barenaked Ladies were my #1 band and Green Day were a few spots lower.     Talk about a band that broke my heart and fell Waaaay down on my list.

Barenaked Ladies 1988 to 2003 - some of the best music EVER MADE, almost as good as OH YEAH.

Barenaked Ladies 2004 to present day - bleh.

I think at one time, Kid Rock was above Green Day on my list as well, because he so easily slid between genres.   Too bad that's over as well.

Green Day though.   Green Day are my musical rock.

23 years and counting.

I checked out one of my local alternative station which is a very good one. They’ve played FOA twice this week but couldn’t see Oh Yeah yet. Probably they’ll play it but not so fruquently, i guess. That station is really great though, I’m glad they play GD.

This is garbage. Lyrically it’s better than FOA and FRA but still, there’s nothing in the slightest that makes me want to come back to it. I’m still optimistic and hopeful for FOAM so we shall see.

I agree that it's better lyrically, but musically it falls wayyy short. FRA is my favorite in that regard with FOAM following behind it.

However, after about 20 listens it has grown on me... albeit not to the point where I like it but to the point I can tolerate it. If it helps the kids of today to discover Green Day then its totally rad.

Is there an alternative station? I can understand a rock group totally smashing this as a GD single. The single isn't a rocker.

It's more of a jam imo. Chill out, put the seat back and reach between my -

I typically like my Barenaked Ladies being actual naked ladies.

All joking aside, they actually got a lot of their fame in my hometown. They played and advertised a show and everyone went nuts thinking it was actual ladies hahaha

They were a pretty witty and fun band. They got overplayed here in the 90s though. Some of their songs actually make me wanna vomit cause of how much it was played.

In Canada we have laws that must be complied with that dictates X% of Canadian content must be played. Of course, while that could really be a policy that's against me it worked in my favor as a Rush fan.

Just to clarify, legally obligated royalties have to be paid. The party that owes a royalty can’t opt to donate the amount due as an alternative.

I believe the release read that Green Day is donating “proceeds” (whatever “proceeds means- it could be gross receipts all the way to net income after subtracting overhead and various costs, I know that’s a wide definitional realm but they didn’t define it for us, and nor are they the first or last entity to be somewhat vague about the definition for these purposes).

Royalties that are subject to payment are still legally obliged to be paid to the owner of the sampled music. I have no idea if Glitter still owns it or has sold the rights (I would suspect the latter as many legacy artists and/or their labels have long since sold their intellectual property or securitized it in some way). And also, it’s interesting how they sampled the Joan Jett cover, and she would have likely been providing a royalty stream as well, so the layering of obligations and flow of money becomes complicated.

Sorry to get a little technical on this, but it’s not as simple as Glitter’s royalties were diverted into charitable donations. Unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Nice to see Kroq supporting it. This song is on the pop side of things so I'm anticipating it to be played heavily.

Haven't heard it (rarely listen to radio), but just checked my local station's playlist and they played it an hour ago.

Edit: They've played it 3 times today.

Which station?  I've been trying to find it on the radio for days!

Just checked- they played it twice today, at 3:03am and 2:53pm.  I tried looking at XRT, but they only show the past couple hours.

I don't listen to the radio anymore, but I'm happy to hear local stations have been playing it!

I still don't really love the song but now that I've thought about some more, it's not that bad, I guess. It would be a lot better without most of the sampling. And the chorus could use some extra handclaps or some kind of extra percussion, which is odd because they overdo the handicapping on a lot of the songs, but here it needs it and they decide not to have it. Weird
