Also if you chose the best 3 Network or Foxboro Hot tubs songs of each of their albums, they are also better tan these 3 songs… And they didn,t use Green Day name on them

It's still GD writing the songs. Those two albums were awesome but were also written and recorded during a peak period for the band.

If you like the direction of AI and 21CB you're more likely to enjoy those songs vs the new ones. For me the fact we have all these songs make me happy.

It's got a theme similar to The Cure in a way. Dark message, lyrics and meaning but put into a format that is brighter creating an overall contrast on the tune. It can make you feel several different emotions at one time.

I feel that way about most green day songs, from Pulling Teeth to Dirty Rotten Bastards

Yeah it's a theme they've mastered over time.

I haven't listened to Pulling Teeth lately but if I remember correctly the solo is from a minor scale so technically it's somewhat following the lyrical content but the way the chords are constructed in the verse they're all major chords. The chorus goes to minor though, not something uncommon with GD.

For each minor scale there's often 3 major chords that can be used. It just so happens the way the song is constructed the contrasts there are the major chords that then shift to minor scale solos and minor chords in the chorus. Well crafted song that's often overlooked in their discography.

After the last two songs, I was quite concerned the whole damn album would have those weird autotune vocals, but in this one Billie sings normally, thank god.

In Spanish but another article here:

https://www.rockfm.fm/al-dia/noticias/green-day-estrena-tema-nuevo-yeah-haciendo-guino-joan-jett-20200117_596244

Can't remember if anyone has put the lyrics in this thread so here you go if not:

"I’m in the crowd full of angels and demons
I’m looking out for the jingles and heathens
Nobody move and nobody gonna get hurt
Reach for the sky with your face in the dirt

Everybody is a star
Got my money and I’m feeling kinda low (feeling kinda low)
Everybody got a scar
Ain’t it funny how we’re running out of hope?

Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

I got blood on my hands in my pockets
That’s what you get turning bullets into rockets (rockets)
I am a kid of a bad education
The shooting star of a lowered expectations

Everybody is a star (star)
Got my money and I’m feeling kinda low (feeling kinda low)
Everybody got a scar (scar)
Ain’t it funny how we’re running out of hope?

Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

I’m just the face in the crowd of spectators
To the sound of the voice a traitor
Dirty looks and I’m looking for a payback
Burning books in a bulletproof backpack

Everybody is a star
Got my money and I’m feeling kinda low (feeling kinda low)
Everybody got a scar (scar)
Ain’t it funny how we’re running out of hope?

Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

The single gets a good write up from this magazine:

https://dujour.com/culture/sound-bite-green-day-coin-alec-benjamin-the-1975-new-songs/

4. “Oh Yeah!” By Green Day

The follow-up single to “Father of All…” from five-time Grammy Award-winning rockers Green Day is a banger. Heavy on synths and even heavier on energy, “Oh Yeah!” is boisterous and wild, borrowing samples from Joan Jett’s cover of “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah.” The song was originally written by Gary Glitter, a convicted sex offender, so Green Day has announced that all royalties from the single will be donated to the International Justice Mission and the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network.

Thinking about it now, when Billie posted that photo from the Glitter Room at the Madonna Inn and another Instastory with a Glitter filter! Makes perfect sense now!!!!

I was wondering who the asshole was and what made them an asshole. I looked into the organizations they were donating to and figured something happened with a woman with violence in it's nature.

I assume this could be somewhat of a controversial topic here on GDC in a similar fashion to the Morrissey thing. I just remind everyone that they're pushing Joan Jett with this and not the person who wrote the song.

There's not a single song or album where Billie Joe has used auto tune

Pitch correction is used which is an industry standard. No auto tune.

I think you're referring to the vocal effects and eq

Looks like Oh Yeah is currently #10 in iTunes Alternative Chart but couldn't reach the site for some reason right now.

@Sheenius they also had a woman direct the video. Makes me appreciate why they choose this as a single even more.

Yes and that was the first time in their history of videos that it happened.

BTW she did a great job it's one of the best music videos they've had in a long time.

It's jingoes. The lyrics are under the video, you can check out there.

Yes she did! The cutting in and out of smartphones & VR is well executed.  They need to use her talents for future videos.

I'm so glad you actually enjoyed some songs and we could have a good discussion, totally made my day dude, thanks. I think there's beauty in every genre, so if I helped one person see this, it put a smile in my face too.

  Reveal hidden contents

And hey, totally not trying to be pushy here, but you seem to be more into the melodic side of music and I noticed I did some disservice to some artists I recommended, so if you're still willing to give it a chance, Tyler The Creator's See You Again uses some beautiful strings arrangements throught out the song that I think you would enjoy and Childish Gambino's Redbone takes the same afrofunk influences used in This is America, but in a much more musical way. Also think you would dig this two songs by Noname and A$AP Rocky, but to be honest, you liking Offence and Old Town Road is good enough for me.

Thanks for these recommendations, these were all decent songs in my opinion and See you Again as well as Sundress stood out the most to me. After not being able to get the thing out of my head though I have to say that Offence is my actually favorite of all of them, I love the old school vibe it has at the same time as feeling new and fresh and the artist who created it has passion for her craft and I think it's fantastic! With stuff like that it's no wonder that a lot of people are connecting with rap music these days.

Now, onto the new single again, listening to the song more, I do think that the song would have benefited with some bridge or solo before the third verse to change the pace a little and give it that extra push.

I couldn't agree more, as a music first lyrics later person there's just so much lacking in this song and I expected a lot more from them. A solo or bridge could have done wonders for this song just as the bridge saved Still Breathing for me on the last album, although I still think 100% that it could have done without the "woahs" and just had that beautiful guitar by itself.

One thing I enjoy about this song is Billie's vocal notes being out of a phrygian dominant scale. It's something that seems to work well with his voice. This is actually a great vocal performance and the song makes a lot of space for it.

One of the reason I love The Cure!

Anyway, just listened to the song again, I fucking love it. I was grooving the whole time!

Green Day really checked all the diversity categories with this: woman director, gay couple, and black character. Should have called it "Bulletproof Video" because it'll shield the video and song from any critique for fear of being called a bigot.

I like how the song has segments that flow with the idea of lost hope and escape. Billie has said its about becoming hopeless with all the shit that’s going on right now, but people are choosing to ignore it and escape in technology. The first verse is despairing, then the “Everyone’s a star” refrain is referring to the technology escape, and the “Oh yeah” one to the kind of mindlessness of it. Then repeat. That’s how I see it anyway.

Why? If you don’t like something about the video I don’t see what stops you from saying it. How having a gay or straight couple changes something?

After listening a dozen times yesterday, the song doesn't seem that bizarre.

Why does that girl have footage of a security guard on her laptop? Is she a secret agent?

My brother texted me today to see if I was ok after hearing the song. Apparently he was cringing about my potential reaction.

I let him know that if I have a new GD song to complain about exactly 26 years after becoming a fan, then I must be dealing with some first-world problems in my life.

I’ve made peace with the song. I can see why some like it, some don’t, and some like me are just happy that their creative wheel is still turning.  I once wrote that I would pay good money for an album of Tre playing accordion for 45 minutes, so I can’t backtrack now.

If I ever see Billie again I plan to ask him if he plans to use Blue to play this live. Mostly just for the reaction, but also because I think it would be pretty cool. I’m guessing he probably doesn’t play guitar on the live version but I’d love to see then turn this into a good ol’ Blue tune live. That would be interesting.

That's something I've been thinking about.  My dad likes Green Day too, but I don't think he would like this song.  Not sure about any of the new ones.

I don't know many real life fans of the band, but one person that is told me she absolutely did not like "Father of All"

I think the point is that everyone is watching someone or something and with cctv everywhere, everyone is being watched, yet the guy whose job it is to watch the screens, is watching a different screen altogether while others are watching him.
