I think this is the still breathing of foam, and I think I like this song more tbh.

Yeah Still Breathing was generic af and I don't know why so many GD fangirls were crying to it.

I believe this is the definition of departure- I’m not trying to be a wiseass, but come on.

I mean, not as much of a departure as Misery or Nightlife imo. It's about as radio-pop as Still Breathing was.

I apologize to anyone I offended with sounding patronizing. @UNICORN VOMIT I shouldn’t have said your comment was juvenile. @DookieLukie I really meant my response to your post as lighthearted. Everyone has a right to dislike the song. The negativity on here just really gets to me. I’ve never seen anything like it on any other forum or any other fans. It’s brutal guys.

This ain't your grandma's Green Day!

Had to revisit the song again.

Anybody listened to all three back to back yet?

I totally did!!

my order from favorite to least

1) FOAM: didnt like it at first but it is growing on me, the song sounds consistently great on the live performances we have so far. Can't wait to experience it live!

2) Oh Yeah: gotta listen to it more to be sure what I really think, I don't hate it for sure but I'm not sure I like it. It is very different from the usual Green Day sound so I'm excited they are experimenting.

3) Fire Ready Aim: don't like this song, it's a song I could listen to if it's playing but I doubt I'll ever feel like ohh I wanna listen to it. It does serve its purpose pretty well though, as it fits really well with sports highlights.

We're talking about a product the band is selling. You act like we're criticizing their family life or community service. You do realize that we pay them money for their music, right?

I honestly don’t know how these bands don’t just hang it up and call it a day.

This is the first FOAM song that I could and wanted to listen to on repeat for a few hours. My whole train ride home from work (which is about 50 minutes) was just playing Oh Yeah on loop. It's a different sound for them, and I really dig it.

Your post was thoughtful so my reaction isn’t based on your ranking or comments but rather to my reaction after just listening to OY yet again:

-FRA at least has guitars featured audibly in the mix

-FOAMF and FRA at least had non-sampled, originally written choruses

- the more I listen to it, the more obvious it is that a portion of OY also very closely replicated the baseline/ chorus outro to Natural One by Folk Implosion. It was an early 90s song- it’s so close I wonder if it will be acknowledged in the album liner. Not sure if anyone else picked up on it yet, but it’s dead on. The descending base and harmony could’ve been a straight up sample it’s so close.

- I’ll stop there. On the positive, the prechorus of everyone is a star is damn good, both composition and performance wise. They have it in them.

Aside from just the sonic departure though, I have serious problems with various portions of this song due to sampling, mixing, and either intentional or lazily unintentional lifting from other songs. They can and hopefully will do better.

I'm gonna attempt to compile all my thoughts on the song I had throughout the day because I'm not in the mood to sift through the whole thread right now

- On the first listen I was ecstatic that Billie was singing in his typical range and overall I really liked the song

- After a couple listens I felt like something was missing but I couldn't really place what it was

--> I feel like one of these things might be Tre. He pretty much plays the same thing the entire time and when it get to "everybody is a star" it feels like everything builds except for him

--> It feels like the song somewhat lacks energy. KYE is around the same speed and that one is definitely energetic so it CAN be done

- The sample reminds me of how Queen basically wrote We Will Rock you to be an audience participation song (at least that's how the movie portrayed it and I understand that the movie didn't get everything right, correct me if I'm wrong with this)

- Between FRA feeling like a hockey song and Oh yeah feeling like a participation song, it kinda takes me out of it?? I'm sure Oh yeah will be fun live

- FOAM was weird the first listen and it quickly grew to be really good. Oh yeah started off great and then I kinda mellowed out, so I guess it's a reverse grower

My current ranking of the big three ranked high to low is FOAM, Oh Yeah, FRA

Listening to it again and is by far the strongest number at the moment. I never felt that amount of dispair in a Green Day song before. Other songs were about giving a shit, empowering people, making a cry for a change. This one is the opposite. Even if we crave for a change, seems that it won't happen that soon. And that sadness, waiting desperately for a different life, is how I feel about my life right now.

This band never fails to send at least one song per record that hits me right on the deepest corners of myself. Seems "Oh yeah" is the chosen one this time.

Yes, and I am not sure if anyone has already pointed this out but OY has the almost exact same chord progression as FRA and it comes straight after on the record. Hopefully the song following it uses a different one or we might have a case of 13 Voices syndrome.

(before people bash me I love 13 Voices, but the last 5 songs using the same chord progression does hurt the experience overall for me)

Honestly, the examples are endless, and this are only songs from the last two years. I hope you can actually take the time to listen more before discrediting an entire genre of music, especially if you only lift up white artists in a genre that was born historically as a space to give voice to the black community. It's legitimate to not like hip-hop, but that doesn't mean you can negate how much it has helped change (and in my opinion evolve) the mainstream music scene as a whole.

I have taken the time to listen to all the other songs you recommended , not sure if you care much about my opinion but you might be surprised by my answers. Here is a basic breakdown:

Element - Not my cup of tea, only so many times I can handle hearing someone say bitch nigga and pussy nigga over and over again.

This is America - Enjoyed the video but I honestly don't hear much music going on in the main parts of the song.

Sicko Mode - Not bad musically, I even heard potential in the music at the start a little bit, the rest of it was a bit too samey though.

Old Town Road - Holy shit where did this come from? this is much closer to my definition of good music. It's more sophisticated, yet simple and catchy. It even has real singing in it. I could even see myself coming back to listen to this again. My favorite so far!

A BOY IS A GUN - Massive step down from the last one, wasn't really a fan of this at all.

Offence - Anything but offensive to me, this was actually really good. Probably my second favorite of these ones musically, respect for the instruments used in this one too. Nice!

Jesus Forgive Me, I Am A Thot - Not bad, not a huge fan of the music and autotune but his emotion and effort to not sound monotone while he raps is a breath of fresh air.

Jailbreak the Tesla - A bit too repetitive for me, the music is basically the same loop throughout the entire song, not really a fan.

Thanks for taking the time to recommend these, I actually really did enjoy Old Town Road and Offence and I am just as surprised as you probably are. These two put a smile on my face and opened my eyes to the fact that it's not all samey loops on repeat. Cheers!

If people could just post opinions of the song without making insulting comments about other people's taste in music this thread could be a happier place

Wait now - you're not going to get bashed for voicing your opinion.  GDC is a safe space🥰
