Definitely self-derisional though. The whole thing is quite depressing when watching the video! but it makes it even more pertinent that way. Musically, quite a jamming song even though it's slow. Catchy melody. I bet that live it's gonna be great Yup, I'm a bit of a bitter "classic Green Day purist" at times (I think especially Billie's lyrical writing has worsened considerably since AI/21CB) and this song doesn't do that much for me instrumentally, but I'm really digging the lyrics and video. And I know how some people said a while back that Green Day writing anti social media songs would be stale and uninspired, but they pulled this one off pretty damn well in my opinion. Maybe it's just how I can relate to the lyrics a whole lot more now. I think social media would be the very definition of a double-edged sword and let us just say, I was on the dark side of that sword for a long while... Hey Oh
I feel like this song will play on the radio a lot and people will be like am I hearing green day? or who the fuck is this?😜🤣 it's very poppy
jengd
I love the Network too and see very little connection here.
KGLWW
I kinda feel like people like this song better just because it's produced better. It's whatever but it just kinda annoys me. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. People don't understand that even if something is more garage like or whatever a lot of times it's the esthetic they're going for or it's based off how much money they have to record it. Doesn't mean it's bad

Exactly what I feared I also hear a bit of Too Dumb To Die in here, only just without the guitars and energy and everything that kind of made it.. y'know good? I bet that live it's gonna be great I think then that kinda could fit Billie’s statement about Foamf "Rock and roll sometimes has become so tame because a lot of rock acts are always trying to look for the feel-good song of the year or something but it actually should make people feel bad..” I think songs itself not that depressive but the lyrics definitely make people question some serious stuff

Hermione
I guess it's because it's more electronic sounding than most Green Day songs? It's not enough of a similarity that it actually sounds like The Network though imo I reeeaaally love this song. It's magical 🤩

I wanted Green Day to do a sound change that made sense with meaningful lyrics and they delivered. Father of all is good, but some things in there just didn’t make sense to me (can over look those though) and fire ready aim just feels like nothing, kinda one feeling straight through. Oh yeah on the other hand is dynamic, great lyrics, cool video, and feels like something that was organic.

That’s partially due to the shift in what music is popular. 2009 had a much greater landscape of genres, where now it’s heavily focused on trap, rap, and chill oriented sounds. 2020 will see a greater blending of genres though, and rock is one of the ones that will in a way make a comeback through rap and alt. And to the statement made earlier by @Beerjeezus I think that these songs lack meaning, I would disagree and to the extent that they may seem like they do, that's kind of the point. Their albums are often a reflection of the times they are writing and living in, and in the current case, it's a reflection of a shallow, anxious, unfocused self obsessed culture in a world that lacks deeper meaning and purpose. That message comes across clearly with everything from the album art to the music and videos.
Lenny
So the song has already been debuted here on the radio at 3 pm I knew they'd back this one up it fits their playlist so well 37 minutes ago, Taste said: I kinda feel like people like this song better just because it's produced better. Doesn't mean it's bad I dunno the drum sound at the beginning is fucking awful. I could literally just take a Shure 58 to my floor tom right now that I haven't tuned in a few months and still sounds 10x more pro than that recording. I get they love that lo-fi shit but Kerplunk shows there's a way to do that where the instruments sound good.

Coming from listening to the BOBD instrumentals that are on youtube and stuff it's a bit jarring hearing what is in my opinion a masterpiece in rock music and then hearing a song by the same band that has very little real sounding instruments in it. SomeNimrod97
I'd say it's like when Butch first worked with Brendan Ure/Panic! At The Disco. Songs that fit the sound fans associate most with them, then other songs completely different and towards pop. I can see this going well for people who like a wide variety of genres, but badly for those who don't like change much. Green Day might have to go more pop as time passes to stay relevant, and it's already starting.

Maybe we're not hearing the same thing then because the song opens with a guitar riff and has pretty prominent guitar and bass all through it. It doesn't sound electronic to me. Sure you have guitar bass and drums, but in BOBD you also had a beautiful piano and acoustic guitar track that gave the song so much depth and personality. Here with this new song the main guitar sounds like it's just one string at a time, and all the layers that make up the song have an electronic feeling to them. I have always been a music fan first and foremost, lyrics are nice but they are just the icing on the cake for me. If there is no cake, you are just left with icing, and that just tastes like shit with no cake.

That message comes across clearly with everything from the album art to the music and videos. I must have said something too harsh again They're not without meaning, but they feel more like three individual songs than a third of an album. But you're right that the lyrics have a common theme and they're not bad at all, they're a classic happy melody/depressing lyrics. The everybody is a star/got a scar bit might be the most poetic moment so far. This era is so gimmicky that it's hard to read into the lyrics, at least for me. Usually I care about them a lot, but this time I don't feel as compelled to interpret them, even though they're perfectly good Billie lyrics. Now that I think of it, we probably payed a lot more attention to revrad lyrics on here too.
KGLWW
I like FOAM and FRA enough but even those songs are just aren't what i expected at this point. I felt like they were growing and maturing as artists on Rev Rad and even some on the Trilogy and now it sounds almost like a different band. Oh Yeah just doesn't appeal to me at all . The vocal reminds me a lot of still breathing, but with that song at least it was like some of their older stuff, but this is just overally mainstream stuff I don't like at all
