but the streaming platforms numbers show that it could be much better.

Good catch there. I think this is due to having a rock audience. As everyone moves forward into streaming we're buying record players and LPs.

I wonder if we can get our hands on back catalog album sales for the band... That would be an interesting group of figures to look at.

I don't typically stream GD I have the CDs in my car, the songs on my ipod and a stack of vinyls.

Maybe it's just generally popular to hate on Green Day? I'd assume the gaming community would be likely to bitch about them, but yeah, there will always be people who do.

I think that also applies to many mainstream acts. It’s more like how social media is working today. Check a rolling stone article about anyone or anything on Facebook, and you will just see an ocean of hate 27.gif

I totally agree. The comments after the AMA performance were overwhelmingly positive and that wasn’t nearly as good as last night’s. It seems that a lot of these gamers are the type that like to just slam everything. The awards accounts were posting after the show and were absolutely getting attacked about the show, the winners, etc. I mean like attacked in a really nasty way. Not a good look for that community.

Yeah it's a culture of negativity. Nothing is ever good enough for a small group of people who haven't achieved anything themselves. Don't worry reality is going to beat these kids down with a baseball bat and they're not ready for it.

@Sheenius I think you're wrong. It was always cool to hate green day. Back in the dookie days they weren't punk enough. Then they got softer. Then they became "emo fags" during american idiot and 21st. And after that till now it's the "oh they aged, i didn't know they still exist" phase.

As I said when you're popular you'll always have contrarians. Dookie was a diamond album though and they got a ton of respect for it including grammy nominations. Most of the hate came from subsculture collectivists not necessarily a popular opinion of a certain generation in your target market or systemic issues with clear channel and other big music corps.

With American Idiot there was a bit more hate I will agree with that but for the most part it is the album they're best known for and looking in retrospect I knew a lot of people who had that attitude then 5-10 years down the line admitted it was a great album. When something is large enough there will be contrarians.

After 21cb things changed and yeah I see the "they still exist" thing and I'm baffled by that. People don't realize good artists don't have expiry dates. The other thing is the issue with Iheart radio halted them a bit as they low key lynch mobbed the band and tried to block them from being played on stations in certain markets. They were still carried by Alternative radio stations and to this day are mostly carried by these stations. This plays a big influence in how they're perceived as AI and 21cb eras they were played on almost all the stations.

Award shows audience for the most part are Top 40 crowd and not Alternative radio crowd.

Edit: I wanna add in as well it's also how the genre is perceived as a whole. Music is definitely in a weird transition period right now heading into the 20's. The way rock oriented music is perceived at the mainstream is the lowest since it's started. For those specifically interested in it GD is held in extremely high regard. These changes are not for the better although there's some small amount of good in it. Rock music will be merged into something that's more mainstream as a tastemaking effect more than used as an actual style or genre. However, it will never really die it will be more prominent than anything else in underground music scenes. It will continue to bubble under and it's not a horrible thing cause that's where a lot of the 90s bands we love came from.

We should probably make a specific GD marketing thread or something as we're getting a bit off topic. I think the whole topic is interesting though.

I am not a gamer but I get the discussion around whether this is a good platform for them or not.  I don’t read comments on YouTube or anywhere really as the curse of the internet is giving every little dweebs a voice.  Having said all that, I love live music, you know, like when a band of actual performers actually play a song with actual functioning instruments and if among those little dweebs, there are some who see a performance like that and say “wait a minute” and go off and look for more, then I say go for it.  As Mike always says, play anywhere and everywhere!

I think they’re just trying to be funny but they’re bored and don’t get to actually have too much fun so the joke isn’t that funny.

And you’re right. We are overthinking it. I analyzed it so much I feel sorry for them. I should feel sorry for how bored I am by analyzing it.

Huh? If their life is an example of bored and not having fun, I want their version of bored.

Oh to be a bored super rich rock star who can't get a thrill out of his 25 tons of legal weed anymore or anything else except for drawing on their face with a sharpie.

Or the other rock star who resorted to flirting with Kevin like a bored Roman emperor with his male lovers.

But the 25 tons of legal weed sound good enough

She wasn't calling people who play video games little dweebs. She was saying people who are assholes in comment sections in general.
