Enjoy The Silence
I have found albums threads for most of the albums, but I can't find the one for this album... Soo (Downunder I have borrowed with permision from the one who have made the others) This thread is for discussion of 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, both the album as a whole and all the individual songs as well. WhiteTim
It’s a good compilation It’s nice to have the LP and the 2 EP’s on one disc
Hermione
39/Smooth is Green Day's first album. 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is a compilation album that came out later consisting of the album 39/Smooth, the 1000 Hours EP, the Slappy EP and the song I Want To Be Alone. I thought there would already be a 39/Smooth thread but I can't find one. For the purposes of discussion I don't see any problem with it being a 1039 SOSH thread rather than a 39/Smooth thread. So carry on!
pacejunkie punk
I love this a lot. Though you can really hear the improvement on Kerplunk once Tre joined, the songs on the Eps and LP are stellar. Guitar solos, signature harmonies, lyrics that are sometimes deep and existential and other times typical teenager love stories, catchy hooks and interesting song structures... all the elements are there. And the fact that they already sounded this good at 18 blows me away. I fell in love with Going to Pasalacqua, At the Library and The Judge’s Daughter for example the very first time I heard them.
Enjoy The Silence
I thought that too. I'm sure I have seen it, that or the whole album as in all 3 in one Isn't 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours that is the officiele album? Anyway in these days it is the album I listen too, then the others as they came out I will write in here and tell what I think when I know the album better, but I can say I don't understand the "hate" of the album

Thatsername
Someone said in another thread that Rest is Green Day's worst song. Blasphemy! I love that song so much. It's not one of the GD albums I listen to very often, but there is some pretty great stuff on it. 3

80 Androids
Great Album, you can really hear their raw sound on it Would be great if they released a 30 year remaster for it.
jengd
I have only ever had the compilation and I agree so much with @pacejunkie punk, while it's not my favourite GD album and I came to it quite a long time after it was released, I love some of the songs on it, in particular Going to Pasalacqua which is still one of my favourite GD songs and they played it the first time I say them live which I just couldn't believe! I love how you can see the progression of the band but a little part of me would like to hear these songs recorded with Tre, Al just wasn't in the same league. I am not aware of a lot hate for this album, looking back at it, a lot is obviously written by a young person but they're still honest songs with catchy hooks, the quality was already there in many ways. I am also one of the people who just love Rest, partly maybe because it's so different but I think it's great and shows huge ambition and to think they were 18 years old!!!
pouty bitch
I love this album so much! It's super underrated. I absolutely adore almost every song on it and I think it's way better than the majority of stuff released after AI.
Welshy
I always liked Rest, can tell from their first album that they weren't scared to have a sappy slow song on there. I never cared much for the Sweet Children EP at the end tho (sweet children/strange land/best thing in town) but my generation is a fun cover. greenalert997x
I love every song on 39/Smooth. The energy, the rough guitars, solos, Billies youthful voice, the production in general, everything

It's not one of the GD albums I listen to very often, but there is some pretty great stuff on it. Rest is probably the first insight into where Green Day was headed for the future. It's a really well written song and I think it's unbelievable that Billie was just a kid when he wrote that. However, it is probably my most skipped 39 smooth song but that's just due to it's somber nature. At the time of the re-release I was listening most to At The Library, Going To Pasalacqua, 16 and Judge's Daughter. The album really spoke to me as the kid with the goofy and non-existent love life. I remember 16 got a lot of plays as I hit the middle of my time in high school. A natural transition occurred which resulted in a slow degradation of a friendship. It wasn't anything ugly it was just two kids actively becoming a part of two completely different scenes. I also have a great long term photographic memory and I can remember the past even including those little minute details. Sometimes I wish I could relive a specific day or event before major changes happened in everyone's life.
greendepent
This record showcases a lot of things for Green Day - Quality songwriting: even if the production is poor (listening to other lookout releases, you got the idea) and playing is not the best (especially Al) you know that you got something here. When I was discovering the band, most songs played live with Tre behind step up seriously. It stunned me how great is At the library or Road To Acceptance, for example. Even if some lyrics are plain cheesy, the hook of their melodies and solos would catch more than one new listener - BJ is a great guitar player: I can't play that Dry Ice solo without getting stuck in that fast strumming after the high bend - Song structures that are still used: Songs like Paper Lanterns or The Judge's Daughter paved the way for a lot of other songs, like 2000 Light Years Away, Scattered, Castaway or Makeout Party. - Rest is pure gold: I dream with the day that Billie Joe comes with his acoustic guitar at the end of a show and play this. I can imagine it being played in a huge arena
Pansyhunter
Whenever I look back on the first 3 albums and especially the first two, I miss Billie doing the more rock and roll sounding solos for songs instead of what they do now with Jason. I know we get some awesome improv live from Billie and he obviously is really good at guitar, but they switched for the most part for melodic based solos rather than the fast paced more punk style. I think the melody solos work really well for the concept albums though, so many from AI are just classic to me now.
