Green Day at 2019 iHeart Music Festival Sep 20-21

AI did seem slower than usual.

Just watched the full performance and wow did Green Day bring it, they we're on fire. Vocally, Billie sounds the best he has in recents years. Despite the quality of the crowd, which I think is nothing unusual for these types of events, Billie managed a few funny comments (such as telling the crowd they are not allowed to scream/smile haha) and still performed like himself with a lot of confidence and charisma  .

I gotta admit I don't really like FOAMF but live, it is so much better than the recorded version. I found myself really enjoying the performance of that song and can't wait to hear it live myself (in 11 months....)!

So glad the guys decIded to come back to this festival, give an amazing performance and still give the festival a little headache by going over theIr time .

I think AI sounded more like the record. It seemed like all of the songs were very faithful performances true to the records which was smart when it wasn’t their audience.

I just want to say that Billie's voice didn't sound THAT GOOD in a long time. He was doing a lot of effort during trilogy and revrad to reach even simpler and easy notes and now he is nailing everything, just like in the old times. Awesome!

They also looked like they were having alot of fun. Laughed at Billie ''crawling'' through Mikes legs.

To the point where I wonder if he actively sought out more lessons or did something to improve over this past year.  It really shows. I still think he sounded great during trilogy but RevRad and Longshot were shaky at times.  This is a noticeable improvement.

You don’t want to see it. It’s cringey

But it’s fine because he didn’t expect them to. He pitched it perfectly for the crowd (unlike in 2012 when he played it like a Green Day concert)

Just watched a few other performances, Camila Cabello got almost nothing back from the crowd when she asked them to sing along.

Billie demanded it more so did get a bit sing along during BOBD.

I've just realized that the #onemoreminute hashtag he wrote on Instagram was maybe referred to the extra part of Foamf they did at the end

I certainly think they planned it for sure. Way to get forced off the stage in a funny way like when the band starts playing and they lower the mic at awards shows when a speech goes too long.

Alright I just watched it and thought I'd write down my thoughts on it before reading through all of yours. It began just as expected with a boring audience which means less energy and excitement from the band. Understandable, and there's probably some nerves to top it off as well. Especially for Billie. His voice was okay, not bad but not extraordinarily good either. Once they started playing FOA it was like someone turned a switch, the energy level got turned tf up and Billies voice surprised me. God damn he sounded good! Especially the second 'there's a riot living inside of us', that made me go hooooly shiiiiit. You could tell the band had fun with that song. The visuals were pretty cool for Holiday and Basket Case and overall I like this new aesthetic even though it's not really my style normally. I finally 'got' Trés new drumkit and went from not liking it to absolutely loving it now. Mikes outfit was on point, Billies hair looked its best, even Jason Freese looked cool! I noticed Billie sang 'MAGA agenda' in AI but didn't sing 'Don Trump towers' in Holiday. Nothing to say about it really, just something I noted.

The best part came last though. When they started playing FOA again I got so fucking excited! Their exit off stage was badass and I laughed out loud at the way Billie put down his guitar oh so gently during that song. Overall their show was pretty much what I expected them to deliever so I'm pleased. Now I'm gonna read your thoughts and see what I've missed lol.

Yeah, he’s definitely got more of that rock n roll feel to him.

Plus i’ve always felt that (at least on social media) they Jeff is kinda obnoxious. I’ve seen him be really disrespectful to fans for no reason.

Yes, that's why I'm curious about it. It looks like Kevin might be just stepping in while Jeff is busy with something else, but there's no sign on Jeff being busy with other projects and moreover he had said he couldn't make any commitments this fall because of Green Day...yet, he's not playing with them. I really don't know what to think. Like you say, either unavailable or in denial and I don't dare make any guesses. (Even though at this point I'm wondering if the "insider" who claimed Jeff got sacked may have been onto something. I didn't buy it at first but it's been 3 performances and still no sign of Jeff. Could be a coincidence, but still.)

I didn't, but Kevin definitely fits in well. He was awesome in FBHT and in Longshot and it's just really really cool to see him with Green Day.

Maybe they will both play a role in the tour?

What was so great about it was that he didn’t have to put the guitar down, he could have taken it with him offstage but it was a definite cheeky statement assuming everyone is watching him and wondering what he’s gonna do when the stage starts revolving.  Always confound expectations 👏

both the fans and his own sense of humour

I didn't notice billie smiling as he put the guitar down at first until I played it back. Cheeky of him to do that 😏

I still don't know what an "iheart radio" is, but it certainly doesn't look or behave like a festival.

Glad they are enjoying themselves up there!

Maybe they’ll keep Matika for the tambourine only :P

Nah, Jason's not giving up that tambourine to anyone. :)

The whole concept of iHeart is weird. The sets are so short, even for a festival.

It just occurred to me that this could actually be the first or at least one of the very few times they played BOBD with a backing track for rhythm guitar and riff, but not for the little throw-in sliding guitar with reverb (di-ding, di-ding, di-ding). That was played normally by Jason, just like when they play the whole thing cleanly (with acoustic or not).

Previously, regarding the guitars it's either been: backing track for everything except during chorus, solo and bridge or no backing track at all.
