Green Day too upset to write new political anthems

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is too upset with politics to find inspiration for his music.

Green Day famously penned their 2004 album American Idiot to denounce U.S. President George W. Bush - which has subsequently been made into a rock opera.

However, Billie has now insisted fans shouldn't expect a follow-up about President Donald Trump because he's too angry to write songs about politics at the moment.

"It's not that I'm ignoring it, it's just that the current political climate is something I just can't draw any inspiration from. I've got tonnes of feelings about it," he told The Guardian. "I think Trump is a piece of s**t. I think (Senate majority leader) Mitch McConnell is pure evil.

"All they care about is looking after the rich and they don't care about the common people. But I find no inspiration there. It's so depressing. It's hard to dance when you can't get out of bed."

Drummer Tre Cool added that even when the band delved into politics they used to try and promote unity - something that feels distant now.

"And the world has become so divisive," he commented. "We wanted to try to bring people together. It's become something of a far-out concept to love each other!"

Green Day's new album, Father of All Motherf**kers, is out now.

Well you got offended when I supposed you were a new fan) so you should know better

I didn’t get offended, I think it’s cool to be a new fan, everyone once was one and is the best feeling in the world :P I just think it’s very stupid to assume someone is a new fan based on the fact that he/she is loving the record  more than the previous two ;) Help me understand the connection with this tho? 😂

Damn... I can't look up Green Day on twitter anymore because every other post is about how racist they are or how irrelevant they are. 😂

I don't know, the way I see it, it's pretty clearly a dig at those genres, in a tongue in cheek manner maybe, but in a way, I think the poster is trying to sell the album based on the idea that not having those characteristics make it inherently better. The poster was clearly looking to be provocative, so it doesn't surprise me people are responding back, cause it just reads as old rock artists shitting on popular music because they can't get in with the youth

I don’t understand why there has to be an automatic association making “different” and “better” the same thing. I understand your point tho, I just think that was more an ironic take towards the common joke “uuuh that band is not the same anymore they are doing featuring, using pop tracks and trap beats, that’s not rock”. Which is stupid as hell as well and is what literally is happening right now, even tho with slightly different arguments, at the same time, to the same band, on another social media. I read that more as a joke towards this if I have to find a provocative side out of it. I mean this is a band that has been fighting purists for 30 years, part of their own fan base have been calling this a troll record for 5 months also because of the announce genre fluid influences. But probably I am wrong and I think this is the case only because I have more information about the band than then a average twitter user. I mean ffs, some people think this is an insult to Avicii, Billie gave his voice for a fucking song with Avicii, he feautured in a trap video two weeks ago, he said Kendrick Lamar is an inspiration for this record. I just don’t understand people’s reaction, I think they just want and like to have another reason to bash the rock band not fitting their standards. However you read it tho, I still find it hard to make that insulting, and if someone label this as racist he/she is probably the racist.

Regarding Ariana Grande you are probably correct, but last time I checked people and artists often had and gave opinion about other people and other artists, sometimes positive sometimes negative. People have preferences, which can be well or misinformed. See the shitstorm above. I just don’t get people turning this in a personal thing on social media and start a shitstorm out of it, but I am also sure the same could have happened in a similar scenario with GD as a “victim” and part of their fans. I just don’t get some people’s behavior on social media.

I know music is subjective, but in my own world it is kinda impossible to put foam higher than the ones I listed. Either you’re a new fan or like something light that doesn’t give heavy emotion. Stay the night at montreux or reading is million times better than foamf

What are all the cocaine references people keep going on about? I've only noticed "yeyo" but then I've only listened to the album twice :P

You said it right in the first sentence, in your own world, which is just your world, not an objective thing that you can use to label people :) I honestly can’t understand how you can say that someone has to like “light stuff that doesn’t give heavy emotion” to like FOAM, probably a song like Stay the night (which is a great one by the way, I just wrote in a different thread they should bring it back live) relates to you in a deeper way, but that’s the essence of subjectivity. Maybe in 8 years you will be in a different place in your life and relate to something else. Personally, especially live, today I prefer different kind of songs, the ones that brings the emotions out of me differently, through dance, rage and movement for example. I love the mosh pit and the sweat, and stay the night gives me a catchy chorus to sing along (which really looks cool in stadiums) but not much more.
FOAM is not really a mosh pit song, but it really generates a cool vibe both on the stage and in the audience, and in no way FOAM is lesser of an emotional catalyst than Stay the night for me. I do think they are pulling out some of their best live performances in years through that song, the instrumental parts are sick, Mike is shining through that bass line, Billie’s singing is weirdly on point, and it looks so much fun. And sorry to surprise you but I am neither a new fan nor someone that likes “light songs”, I just grew up with rock n roll and love the shit out of this 😂

I wouldn't say the poster is racist, but it's cringy as fuck and completely out of place. It goes against everything they've been doing in their PR recently (BE, Tyla etc.).

The poster with the "no Swedish songwriters" "no trap beats" "just pure rocknroll" written in the coke font. It's just embarrassing.

Does anyone remember that speech to text thing that Billie posted a few months ago?  The one that said, “Gonna let it girl, take it forad rah?” Or something like that? Now that we’ve heard the album, I wonder if anyone could figure out what song that might be unless it’s one of the 6 extra songs

Just something to put the poster/Ariana Grande controversy into perspective.I haven’t looked on other platforms besides twitter and IG but it looks like it’s mostly a twitter controversy. I haven’t seen a lot of negative comments on their IG posts. Am I wrong? Twitter is a major bubble of cancel culture, and within that bubble they never even trended on this. I see hashtags for #cancel this or that celebrity almost daily so this is one time that the members of GD not being current A list celebrities probably works to their advantage. Also I haven’t seen any mainstream articles about this, although again I’m not checking so correct me if I’m wrong.

This is what these kind of outlets and even news outlets do though. You have a tiny reaction from a small group on twitter and they will spin it as if the whole platform is up in arms when the reality is a handful of people. Internet discourse is the go to now for clicks and it works.

So you’re saying it’s bigger than it looks?
