It felt really weird and kind of dark when the whole thing was announced, definitely bringing some of the Trilogy vibes, so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I like the record and the whole feel behind it, at least more than Revolution Radio, which always seemed too safe to me (however, Somewhere Now, Bang Bang and Outlaws really stick out. I fucking love Outlaws man, it makes me cry). I mean, Billie is definitely in some kind of dark place I'd say, but in a different way than in 2012. In some ways it scares me, but I also think him, Mike and Tre have the tightest relationship than ever and they support and help each other alot. I think I can understand where are these new lyrics coming from. It's an interesting time for being a Green Day fan and it's kind of bizzare that I've been stuck with these guys for 15 years and I'm looking forward to continue this ride. In the end, they are and will always be my band. My favorite band. A-fucking-MEN 1

I'm starting to think Billie stole the reviewer's dog or something, like do we even know where Lenny came from? Really makes you wonder... Haha #LennyGate 28 minutes ago, Clayish said: Sugar Youth is the best thing they've done in a long time, but so much of this is just.... lame. What’s interesting is that virtually everyone here has a different favorite song. You could fill in the blank with it and believe it’s the best thing they’ve done in years. And everyone is right. That’s high praise of an album. It’s not like everyone is agreeing on one good song only. This album has broad appeal even if you don’t like everything on it (and there are even those that do) 2 1

I think he is more aware of himself right now. He always has a high awareness of the things happening around him and depressive side but now not more mature, still how he has always been but seems more accepted and balanced imo

Honestly, although I have only had a quick look at the lyrics so far, Billie has written plenty of dark stuff and I don't think this is any darker then Insomniac say, I think we just to accept that this is how he is. He seems surprised by it himself judging by some of the interviews!

Not saying that these lyrics do not come from his heart, but dark lyrics are part of that Green Day filter they are often taking about. I do believe that, to a certain extent, he sincerely enjoy and want to write this sort of songs.

Insomniac was fast, into your face punk rock record so it automatically made more sense, as well as some of the stuff on 21CB (Restless Heart Syndrome immediately comes in mind, gosh that's a dark one..)

jengd
Agreeing with all above, and just because he wrote about being a suicide bomber, doesn't actually mean he really wants to be one! Poetic licence, artistic factor, whatever you want to call it. I listened to the new Nimrods podcast today where they review Platypus and given how long they've been fans, I found it hilarious that only on preparing to record the podcast, did they really look at the lyrics and discover the song is about Tim Yohannon, you want to talk dark! They were really shocked! 1
