I thought it was the aborted original music video for FOAM that Billie said was a disaster.

When did he say that?

During the iheart interview, he said the video shoot was a complete fiasco, worse than 2012 iheart performance. He didn’t say they weren’t going to use the video but it did appear to have been a video shoot and it’s never appeared. It’s about the 5 minute mark.  He may be talking about the video we have and the Madonna Inn one will still appear though, who knows.

This plus there was a comment on the FOAMF video on YouTube by someone who said they saw the original unused video and it was really cool and they were wondering why it got changed out for this more stripped down one so presumably there was a first video it was likely from that location. (The makeup artist from the Madonna Inn shoot showed several models and said they were shooting a video at the time).

Can I ask what you don’t like about insomniac?

taste is so interesting because I also have AI at #1 but Insomniac is probably my second favourite.

I love everything Green Day have ever done.  Insomniac is a great album for sure, but I feel like it's not as strong as the others.   If I had to give a reason, I'd say "Panic Song", "Brainstew", "Westbound Sign" and "Tight Wad Hill" are among my least favorite songs by them.   I haven't listened to it for a very long time, maybe it's time I revisit it.

Father of All could prove to be in a similar vain as Insomniac, and I'd be okay with that.

I'm just waiting for the Kerplunk-lovers to come at me with it all the way at the bottom of my list, haha.

This album is going to be a garage rock mixed with bubblegum power-pop album that's quick, catchy, in your face and above all fun. With that said i can already tell its definitely missing any sort of substance lyrically.

That's the only thing here that I'm bothered by. The trilogy's lyrics ranged from cringy to meh with a few decent songs here and there. Revrad, while at times cliche and corny, was a step in the right direction with songs like Bang Bang and To Dumb To Die.

I'm digging the feel to this album but I wish BJA was able to write compelling lyrics to accompany the new sound  instead of going full "lol rocknroll bitchez" but maybe it's to early to really tell

Yeah I don't think this album is going to have the poetry of Insomniac, AI or 21cb. I wouldn't say the song FOAMF has terrible lyrics. There's not a lot of lyrics it's directly to the point. I think that will be somewhat of a theme here. Rather than write a novel on the world like previous albums it's more of a protest through "No Comment".

I feel like FRA is somewhat similar to what KYE was. KYE was used in similar vain as FRA and the song doesn't say much. The only difference is FRA doesn't really say anything at all. I almost kind of feel like this is the reasoning for having the vocals mixed way at the back. Despite the lyrics saying nothing, Billie's singing sounds great and he's still cutting through the heavy guitars.

The thing is I don't even think it's a bad song at all though. The music fits with the sport it's representing. I mean, We Will Rock You has been a huge sports anthem for years and that song doesn't really say much lyrically as well vs other Queen songs that tell a huge story.

Short article here from the List: Billie Joe Armstrong 'pulled his hair out' over Green Day's new album

https://www.list.co.uk/article/112070-billie-joe-armstrong-pulled-his-hair-out-over-green-days-new-album/

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong was pulling his "hair out" whilst making the band's new album.

The 47-year-old singer has admitted to experimenting with various sounds during the recording sessions for 'Father of All Motherf***ers', which is poised for release in February 2020.

He explained: "I knew I wanted to do something different.

"I'd always loved British mod music from the Sixties, but I wanted to go to where the source was and see if I could put [soul] through the Green Day filter.

"It was a lot of trial and error, a lot of pulling my f***ing hair out."

Meanwhile, Billie's bandmate Mike Dirnt thinks the popular band is currently making some of the best music they've ever made.

And the 47-year-old bassist is happy and relieved he's managed to remain at the top of the music industry for so many years.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Mike – who formed the chart-topping band alongside Billie in 1986 – shared: "It's been a f***ing crazy ride.

"How the hell I'm vertical and still putting out what I consider to be the best f***ing music of our career is beyond me. I'm humbled by it all the time, but I'm still hungry and I still wanna kick a lot of ass."

Don;t think this has already been posted

I also noticed how in just about every interview they brought up being at the end of their contract with Warner and Crush management. Now with what Billie said during the Howard Stern interview it makes a lot of sense. I definitely think this is their way of making Warner nervous and saying, you don't want us to leave? Pony up!

Yeah but Mike has been saying this literally for every album release 😂

I'd rather hear them just say it's going to suck and laugh at that comment. The comment would fit the album cover well that's for sure.

I still find it hilarious that fans are still trying to make any sense of this era. It's not going to make any sense.

Trying to find a meaning to any of this is harder than riding a unicycle while jumping through a hoop of fire with a lion chasing you.

Also the whole "this is the best thing we've done" is something all artists and bands say about their new music. And of course they would! Not only are they most likely genuinely excited about new material, but they're trying to get people excited for it.

Surely you meant Unicorn Up! 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄

Seriously though I'll be disappointed if it is like it seems; just negotiation tactics. I was really looking forward to them going independent and while I get the many perks of staying on a label I still think independent is the right way to go for them at this point.

I thought abut saying that but it didn't sound snappy enough!

I know what you mean. I was actually pretty excited that they were at the end of their contract. I was looking forward to see how they would release new music and what exactly it would sound like. It may still happen, who knows.

They still could do that if Warner doesn’t meet their terms but there are advantages to staying with them too. I would guess things are going to be better for fans either way because they won’t give anything up to stay. If Warner agrees, they’ll release more music like they want to. They won’t stay if it continues to tie them to album only deals.

No shit. Still makes me nervous that they don't seem set on going independent as they first had us believe. I think there's a possibility of them accepting a deal that's 'good enough' ie not quite as good for us fans as going independent would have been. Oh well. It's not a huge deal, just kind of annoying because they made me expect it to 100% happen and now it might not. Whatever they decide to do I desperately want them to fix their fucking promotion because as @Beerjeezus said right now it's all over the place and in a lot of ways just embarrassing.

They aren't just bluffing. It's no coincidence that they're all of a sudden strengthening their ties with sponsors. The NHL deal and the more than ever visible Harley sponsorship for HM might be their way of preparing for a smooth transition to when there won't be Warner with its capital to back them up. Which is ironic, because this way we might look back on major label Green Day as the less commercialized phase of their career :P

What’s wrong with their promotion? To me everything seems well coordinated and scheduled out, not haphazard at all. RevRad promotion seemed very old school (late night talk shows and the odd awards show mostly) and directed mostly toward their fans. This seems designed to help them reach new audiences. The releases and promo appearances, interviews, performances, etc. have also been nicely spaced out so we have something new to look forward to every week or two which I like.

The promotion isn't badly done, it's mainly the band that's making me look at it like "you are...doing what?" I thought about what I had to say about the way it's promoted and yeah, it's not that odd. And despite the fact that it's far from what I'd like or want, I see it's crafted to make new fans and money and thats's what it should do.

But for real, the posts in this thread over the last 3 hours are the content I'm here for. This is fascinating discussion and analysis.

I agree on them spacing it all out nicely. Of course it's not all bad and I see the point in a lot of it but it's just not up my alley. Instagram posts with flossing unicorns and Tik Tok? I'm all for reaching new fans but since when are their target audience 8 year olds? It all feels very 'how do u do fellow kids' to me. What really bothers me though is the lack of pride/passion showing. I'm convinced it's there but the cringey feverish write ups that has come with every release so far doesn't show it. They don't really show it in interviews either. Mike said 'it's their best work' but he always says that. I believe he might be sincere but I'm just not feeling it. I want to feed off their excitement like I have previously but right now it's not there. I mean damn, some fans even think they're just trolling.

When I said I desperately want them to up their game I was being dramatic lol. Probably still scarred from the RevRad era and lack of pro shot footage etc, it's definitely better this time around so far but again I'm not feeling it. The NHL thing is a good move and so is their increased presence on social media. Going back to iHeart, genius. I love this era, I just wish they'd show their love for it too because I know it's there. I get that they're trying to be BaDaSs or something but right now it just comes off as not caring, which decreases my excitement for the new stuff.
