jengd
If Green Day are going for this current strategy, I don’t like it much and am maybe not alone. Just heard on the radio, talk about Sam Fender’s new album and they are saying that the singles have been out so long, they had forgotten there was still an album to come. I understand the desire to change marketing tactics etc but think this one ignores human psychology.
Jirachi
Im still 100% up for announcing a thing and then releasing maybe 1 single before the album release. I actually like it when bands are quiet and secretive about making an album. Always sucks when ya get 5 singles off a 10 song album and know half the album before it releases and always puts pressure on the band to "gO FASTER AND ANNOUNCE ALREADY". I have concerns about it too but it is the way that most albums are released now, so managers/record companies have to be seeing good results with this strategy. Clockwise
And besides they're going independent after this one and that will herald a new golden era.
nohamxx
They can’t re sign a new contract instead of become independent ?

They can but they’ll be stuck in the same situation because I don’t think any artist has control over marketing to get to decide things like release schedules and sales strategy. You have to be independent to do those things (and rich enough that you don’t care if you costs you in revenue). And if they don’t do it I don’t think it will be chickening out necessarily. It’s a hard decision there are clear pros and cons on both sides. They have to feel at this point that the pros outweigh the cons for themselves and their audience. Clockwise
I mean it’d be rad if they signed with a company that could provide marketing and radio push etc. WHEN they wanted it. Like a big “commercial” album every 2-3 years but in between they had the freedom to put out EP’s, singles and other projects without being bonded to their contract. Beerjeezus
They've gone as far as they could in the mainstream world, so if they're choosing artstic freedom and going indie it's way more interesting than continuing as a band that's in the position where they can't outdo themselves. However, I can't really imagine it's possible to do the whole mainstream/stadium band thing independently. To me it looks like it will go with a downscaling of the whole business, which is cool if it means more music and more smaller shows and that also makes sense for the future, because honestly, I can see that working for them better in some 10, 15 years than trying to do the same thing they did in 2004 when they're over 60. I agree, but I'm afraid that this particular strategy is mainly focused on releasing singles and puts the album on a 2nd place because album sales have dropped massively since online streaming became such a big thing. This is what I'm most afraid of. People used to have to buy the whole album even though they only liked one or two songs they heard on the radio. The LP has taken a back seat to the single in the digital music era. Bad news for a band like GD, who are in the business of crafting albums, rather than dropping a buzz single a couple times a year. It seems like there have been 2 "hints" at a potential show but nothing that really hinted at a new album coming anytime soon. If this is a marketing strategy, it is to a very, very small audience, to the groups of people that actively seek information. If there is a new album coming relatively soon, my guess is they have not started any real marketing.

Billie Joes Eyelids
This is completely off topic so forgive me. But Taylor Swift is going full political now. With some of the songs on her new album, interviews, speeches, the whole bit. FINALLY someone big is being unafraid to speak up. And I’m not even a TS fan. It has been like sadly lacking. I hope others follow, and I won’t be mad if GD is very frankly and honestly political in a few of their songs on this album.
