Do any of us actually know anything? Usually a lot of us are so good at guessing it’s actually uncanny. But this time... Seems super secret... Does anyone actually know anything and are there any concrete sources?

What’s the cutoff date for the MTV VMAs?

And it's been being worked on for a few years now?

most likely its on hiatus since there's no tour no album no nothing for the last year or so there's no point of charging people for a club that offers no benefits at the moment

@jengd

I only read this post cause you called me out. What’s the topic?  I had you quoted but lost it but is seemed to be about copyright infringement?  ©

Sounds like copyright infringement? If it is, listen to the Longshot album which is an homage (Love is for Losers) to so many influences and unabashed. You can practically get away with remaking a song as long as you are writing and performing it. Where Ip law comes into effect is when you rip it off completely.

The seminal case that defined it is odd. It’s Biz Markie (an 80s rapper and an Irish singer O’Sullivan) which stopped the 80s hip hop sample party which is a shame because the song that is considered by critics to be the Beastie Boys greatest song has like literally over 1000 samples.  Go listen to LIFL and say off the top “Turn Me Loose” and at the same time play “Mr. Postman”. Same timing, melody and progression but nobody is gonna complain about that:

Biz Markie song that didn’t sample but bit Sullivan. Just the chorus (and the sample from THE ACTUAL SONG was sampled throughout) and Sullivan sued and change the face of music and to this day says he regrets it. “Alone Again, Naturally” - O’Sullivan

The original. Listen to the piano and then the chorus being sung is not even where he was sued:

Finally, here is the guineas record holder for most samples in a song. Of course they learned from Rick Rubin where Ad Rock used to intern for him when he created Def Jam Records out of his NYU dorm room. There is a great documentary about it on Netflix or Prime right now. This song could never be made today:

And Machine Gun by the Commodores and I could literally put about 20 more records here that were obvious samples and over the years 100s more were discovered. This whole album was a sampling masterpiece.

now finally; Turn me Loose and pick any hit from the 50s but most like Postman: (actually  meant “The Last Time” thanks @Beerjeezus

Now this song takes no samples but this whole album was Billies thank you to music from the 50s and 60s as most of his music borrows from  music from this period which is his favorite I would have to believe from his writing. Even his old actual punk stuff used to use progressions from the 60s and a musicians ear would say this was a bite of postman or a hundred others but it’s an homage and can’t be touched. The chord on the song LIFL at the beginning is a staple beatles chord at the beginning of I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Go listen but check out Postman after listening above:

Anyway, you can remake a song for usually not much if you by the rights but sampling a work of art created is a lot more money and easily sueable.  Listen to this and I think Spirit lost this case to Zepplin but Page wrote this song after touring with Tourus for a summer and think of how much money Stairway to Heaven made and some argue, it’s just a downward arpegiation, it’s fine but:

I won’t insult any of you by posting stair way but keep listening to Spirit. The song initially lost due to a technicality in 2014 and was retried in 2016 and Spirit lost. Go figure. They said it didn’t sound “substantially like Stairway to Heaven” so go figure. Imagine you wrote this and then saw Zeppelin make millions and millions and you got nothing.

Finally remember that song “All About That Bass”. Check out the song written by Coyote or something, some K-pop band about 10 years earlier:

wait so Trailer but Happy Mode by a K-pop band? Story line thickens. lol.

This is Phish in 1989, this almost HAS TO BE  a coincidence right?

I could go on but this makes up the crux of my IP law diatribe. IMO, everyone should be able to  make whatever they want. There should be no ownership of sound waves.

Hope I was in the realm. What was the question. Ha. Just a chance to post some songs I dig.

I know this isn't the overall point of your post, but I hear a lot of The Last Time when listening to Please Mr. Postman, rather than Turn Me Loose. Is that by chance what you were thinking of?

So do I. Mostly The Last Time with a bit of LIFL. However, there's something in Turn Me Loose too. I know the chorus from somewhere, but can't remember where it's from for the life of me. I'd love to find out.

I actually love finding parallels between old songs and Longshot or Foxboro Hot Tubs. There's a lot and I wouldn't say it's a bad thing. Melodies get re-used all the time not only in pop music but in classical music too and it's fun to see how different people in different times used the same motive.

If you want to listen to something that most likely doesn't sound like some older rock'n'roll song, there's some Altai throat singing. My new favorite band.

Lol. Yeah, totally. I should listen to my shit before posting it. Turn me loose actually sounds like another that I can’t think of. Not for nothing, the Stones have a song called “The Last Time”.

Good call though. Totally right.
