It takes a ridiculous number of streams for such an old song to even be on the same level as an average new one. It shows you how much the song still resonates with people they really should capitalize on this by doing a special anniversary release, special or tour next year (hey even the HBO movie would be great). But they should do something while the song/album is again fresh in people’s minds.
Second favourite son
I had a chat with the guy who started the campaign - you can read it on GDA now. Turns out he's the same guy as the one behind the RATM Vs X Factor campaign in 2009 (which was huge) and several others!

Billie Hoe
So can we say that the campaign sort of failed, since it was meant to be #1? It got a lot news coverage for their standard, but was it even a success in the end?

Right, I forgot about the others - that is pretty impressive. Also, I don't know if that has been mentioned already I'm too lazy to go back in pages, I saw on Amazon that two different versions of the same song somehow charted in the Top 10, plus the live version from Awesome as Fuck. So that's three placements in the Top 10...
pacejunkie punk
I imagine GD will get some nice royalty checks for the sales this week. I know it wasn’t the point of the thing but I still have to wonder what they earned. Anyone know how this works as far as what dollar amount downloads/streams/sales translates into for the artists? I have no idea whether we’re talking a few thousand or tens of thousands or more. What’s the ballpark estimate?
Squashie
This might answer some of that question @pacejunkie punk. Seems that some is dependent on the terms of the contract between artist & label and some on government regulations. http://futureofmusic.org/sites/default/files/moneyflow.sales.png http://futureofmusic.org/sites/default/files/moneyflow.streams.png Full article here: https://www.royaltyexchange.com/learn/music-royalties

Complicated but interesting. So those royalty payments come in from multiple sources — the record label (for the recording), the publisher (for the songwriting) and the performance rights organization (for the public performance of the song). It all adds up I suppose when you’re talking about millions of downloads, airplays and streams across TV, film, radio, internet, etc.

tomdsjames
Another positive effect from this campaign is that Green Day’s Greatest Hits re-entered the chart and remained there again this week, bringing its tally to a pretty impressive 29 weeks in the chart. It’s also now earned silver certification in the UK.
