Longshot album Love is for Losers

I'm not trying to bait you. The band is personal to me as well. Those were just my thoughts and opinions. Part of life is about "letting things slide." Others disagree with me and did so very respectfully. I think all three band members are talented, good people. You can critique someone's work without insulting them as a person.

This album is so delicious.

This album is sprinkled with Billie's favorite buzz words and some familiar quotes.  At first I picked up on the ones from American Idiot because of how they are burnt into my brain.  But there are little threads from Breakdown, Trilogy and Revolution Radio peppered throughout.  it's pretty cool to discover them.   Delicious I tell you!

Too dumb to die or even cry, WOO HOO!

Right now my top picks are:

Happiness, Soul Surrender and Cult Hero.   Just Freaking WOW.

Has anyone tried to say this album is a concept album yet?  I'm looking at the songs and honestly, I don't think I could find a story if I tried.

I doubt Billie would put the effort of making a concept for a side project. If he were to do another concept, he'd probably save it for another Green Day album.

I can understand some of the thoughts people have concerning Mike’s and Tre’s work, but then I just can’t agee at all that this is somehow the best thing they’ve done in a decade. RevRad features arguably some of the best drumming Tre has done in a while and the bass lines on the Longshot songs are nothing special. Also, sure technically Green Day could potentially exist without Tre and Mike, but in name only. I mean, it’s highly disingenuous to disregard the last 28 year’s of Green Day’s existence, which shape who they are and what they’ve contributed. I mean (and this’ll offend some people), Green Day was not a properly tuned and viable band before Tre joined. Today we enjoy some of their early material, but honestly John’s drumming is terrible and doesn’t work at together with Mike and Billie’s playing. Unlike Nirvana (used as an unfair comparison) we’re not talking about a few albums and 4 year career, no we’re talking about 10 (11) studio albums and a 28 year career. It be like removing Roger Waters and Nick Mason from Pink Floyd and still calling that Pink Floyd. That would make absolutely no sense whatsoever...

to be fair I was only comparing Nirvana to GD as far as the drummer situation which really isn’t a unfair comparison both drummers were 5th members of an existing band and both drummers elevated both bands so it’s really not an unfair comparison and they both existed at the same time from 86-94 they both had been a band for 8 years GD of course went longer cause thankfully no one died

Unlike Nirvana (used as an unfair comparison) we’re not simply talking about a few albums and a 4 year career, no we’re talking about 10 (11) studio albums and a 28+ year career as a trio (exception JW being added between 2012-2016). It would be like removing Roger Waters and Nick Mason from Pink Floyd and still calling that Pink Floyd. That would make absolutely no sense whatsoever...

completely agree. 'somewhere now' and 'forever now' alone, are better than anything on this album, in my opinion. the songwriting, melodies, musicianship, everything on even just those two songs, tops anything on this, for me.

not a knock against love is for losers, I'm fucking loving this album, been on repeat since last night. but yeah, personally wouldn't place this above green day's work over the last decade.

This album has the least amount of bleep-worthy curse words on it.  There are a few very minor swears (hell, damned, piss) but just one F-bomb.

Just a useless bit of info.

i don't think its a concept album in the traditional sense, but if you want to get weird with it, you can look at basically any song billie has written and see it within one giant conceptual story arc. its all about this dude from bum fuck nowhere, trying to make something of himself, getting beaten down, heartbroken, life taking a shit on him, being lost and disillusioned... essentially billie's entire discography is the on-going story of a nobody guy just trying to survive, which is exactly his real life haha. this album def fits in with that

It's actually a very "dad music" kinda album :)

Not to take another swing at the horse, but I wonder if Devil's Kind was cut for lyrical reasons? Compare the first stanza:

Puke stains and cigarettes / The party is in my pocket / I'm looking for a drink / And a couch to call my own

To that of Chasing a Ghost:

Piss stains and cigarettes / This party's getting dull / I'm looking for a bump / And a wall to call my home

Granted, it's but one similarity. It's a pretty glaring one, though. So maybe he decided it was TOO similar and gave it the axe in favor of the stronger track. Apologies if this has already been covered.

Interesting. That’s what happened with a lot of early trilogy songs too; parts of the lyrics got recycled into other songs.

My Quick Review of 'Love is for Losers' by The Long Shot!

1. The Last Time - An excellent gem reminiscent of Twist and Shout by the Beatles and Twisting the Night Away by Sam Cooke! Definitely won't be the last time I listen to this great song! 8.5/10

2. Taxi Driver - A good song that serves it's purpose as a good rock filler. Nothing out of the ordinary here. 7/10

3. Chasing a Ghost - Definitely the most solid of the EP songs, but I'm glad to say it's only in the middle of the pack on the album. Excellent guitar choices on the verses and a great melody! 8/10

4. Body Bag - Wonderful tune, wonderful vocals, wonderful guitar solo.. wonderful! 8/10

5. Hey kid, love is for losers now, alright! Well love might be for losers, but this title track is for winners! The melody of the chorus (that reminds me of Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles for some weird reason) is a great staple for this great album! 8/10

6. Cult Hero - My personal favorite, and in my opinion, strongest of the album! The melodies and harmonies are off the charts good, and the verses, choruses and solo work so well together, it's almost masterfully showing off! 9.5/10

7. Kill Your Friends - I know it's not the most popular amongst the bigger fans, but in my top half for sure! The guitar work is very solid, and has an awesome late 80s replacements vibe! 8.5/10

8. Happiness - Very personal and honest Gem with some of the best melodies Billie has written. Could be an instant classic if it wasn't for the masses not having the slightest clue what great music sounds like! 9/10

9. Soul Surrender - Sweeeeeet Soooouul Surrnder! Those harmonies are delicious, and somewhat new to Billies writing style! Aside from the chorus seeming semi-out of place, it's a great listen and a highlight of the album! 9/10

10. Turn Me Loose - Another excellent tune to round out a great record! Flat out stripped down rock and roll at it's finest! 8.5/10

11. Goodbye to Romance - A great cover of a good song.. not much to say because it's a cover, but a nice closer none the less.. 7.5/10

To close, I loved this album! It is miles above RevRad, but doesn't quite reach the peaks of Uno and Tre, and doesn't need to! Billie has proven himself time and time again that's he's the best rock song writer of our generation, and it's all bonus at this point! 91.5/110 = 83%

translation: 'our phones exploded from all your complaints and grumbles, so we recorded it quick-like and will put it out in a couple days, after chris finishes mixing/mastering.  :fuckyou:'

Its interesting how much more "involved" he is on the longshot IG account with fans compared to His personal account

GD one is understandable most likely handled by Warner or whoever

Good enough we’ll take it  My guess is he did not anticipate the outcry. He also didn’t anticipate Basket Case would be a hit until people started requesting it at shows.

I’m really liking this album! Only song I’m not a big fan of is Body Bag. The Last Time and Happiness are probably favorites!

Really digging this album.  Love it.  Chasing A Ghost, Taxi Driver a favorite.

Still hoping for a physical copy.  I copied it to cassette today, so I have some listening music in the car tomorrow on my road trip.

Watching all the video from the shows, everything sounds so good live.  sorry I had to miss the San Francisco show and Oakland show.  Thought is was interesting to see the earring, I like it. No wedding ring? So used to it.

And the moral of the story is, annoy Billie Joe enough and you’ll get the song you ask for. :)
