Again, we are all free to agree or disagree with their choices and not like certain content, but it always just strikes me as weird when people start saying what is or isn't right for the band. They know what they are trying to say and what is right for them. We don't have to agree or like it, but it's their place to make their own art the way they see fit.

Of course, but sometimes the content just seems forced and very how do you do fellow kids and even though I totally respect their freedom to do what they want, I think the way they chose to present in 2019 was embarrassing

I thought he was eating a carnation and didn’t question it at all until I saw other people dissecting the picture

First, this was definitely not directed at you. :) I really like how you think about these things. I agree with your take on the FOAM ethic, but I guess I see it as the point. It was an unhinged approach for an unhinged time, like when you have been so angry about things for so long that you become apathetic and then start acting out in the other direction just to try to make the pain stop. So yeah, maybe it was cringe, but cringe was the point. Like there is a sense of irony there.

I feel like we as a thread keep coming back to the carnation debate. 🤣

Oh yeah, I agree the album was about hopeless nihilism, but there must be a way to talk about that without being cringy. It’s a relatable emotion for many, without the pure uncut rock bs. It’s a valid artistic theme, but jesus christ, why did they have to market it to children in a “drugs are cool!” way is beyond me.

Was it marketed to kids though? Didn't feel that way to me.

Honestly who the hell knows, but the cartoonishness and tiktock account were aspects that probably were meant to appeal to kids... the MMOTR video too I guess?

Hard to know. I guess that could be, though I saw all of that as them trying to really boost the whole absurd/over-the-top image of the album.

Back in the day there was a lot of theories that put it all into a meta context, but as they turned out mostly wrong, I think taking it at a face value is in the end the option that makes the most sense... We were like the Sherlock fans who couldn’t believe the last episode was so absurdly convoluted that they invented a secret good episode that’s certainly going to come out later :P

Sam Bayer did other videos after AI (My Chemical Romance’s Welcome To The Black Parade & Famous Last Words comes to mind), but he did seem to stop after late 2006. I guess something about ¡Uno! must’ve rekindled his desire to direct like American Idiot did. That or the women in the Oh Love video.

P.S. He also directed the video for Kill The DJ for those who were unaware.

Yup. Amazing how he goes from giving iconic videos, including Smells Like Teen Spirit, to snooze feats like Kill the Dj and Oh Love 🙄

Wait, SAM BAYER MADE SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT????????? Remind me why we are hating on this guy? (Also still believing Kill The DJ and Oh Love are brilliant).

That’s true that one could hardly be called a video. It’s not offensive though it’s just like, why?

Does that even count as a music video? I never considered it to be one.

Very true. Thinking back, I think It’s not really supposed to be a music video, especially since the YouTube video for it doesn’t say that it is one. Plus the contest video sort of fills that gap anyway.

I wasn't even aware there was a video for X-Kid.

It's literally just a video of a cassette turning for 4 mins and 10 seconds lmao

What’s more is that the angle makes it look like it’s being played in an upright position, which looks completely wrong. =/

Actually, how could any video make less sense than Last of the American Girls? Seriously, why are they dancing around in the desert with random household appliances? Why does she have clothes on in a bathtub? What does any of this have to do with the song? So many questions.

I loved both Troubled Times videos, the lyric one, and the "where did it come from" one (which I remember someone here was putting out the theory that someone must have hacked Billie's phone ).

Oh yeah, Trump with KKK hats for teeth is great and so is the mysterious one. I think he just wanted to put it out "unofficially".
