We will never know what was in Sam Bayer's head nor will we know the conversations the band had with him in the creation of the video. For all we know, Billie, for example could have told him what he would have been like if he were not a family man...same for Mike and Tre. Or it could have been Sam Bayer's interpretation of what rock stars' experiences are. 🤷♀️
Popular Post Slave To The Network
It's Sam Bayer. I don't think Oh Love was meant to be subversive. Whether it was a focus on the women in power or the men in power, I would still find it super out of place for a Green Day video and not a good fit for the song. We are pattern finders by nature and I think that's what's going on here. You'll read into it what you want to see and that's about it. At the end of the day, it's a dumb, poorly executed video with Green Day trying to be all "cool rock star" and a bunch of Playboy actresses showing off their bodies (nothing wrong with that, it's just not making a statement and doesn't add anything). HCTS was just stupid and boring. I think I'd rather watch Oh Love because at least the band is playing in it. I'm done here. Look at this cute boy. 4

And all that may well be true. I think I am going to leave this convo for now since at this point I will probably just start repeating myself. Thanks for being part of this discussion! Popular Post solongfromthestars
Sam Bayer came out of retirement just to make the Oh Love video, so I'm pretty sure it exists to satisfy his desire. It's meant to come across as a famous rock band being backstage with hot girls, as people have always expected famous rock bands to be, which isn't anything new or groundbreaking. That doesn't mean it's problematic, offensive or upsetting in any way. It's just a cliche that could have been done well but, at least in my opinion, wasn't. I wouldn't even say it's aged badly. It was always crap! That said, I do think the band look great in it. I generally dislike everything about Sam Bayer's work (JOS and WMUWSE were too many minutes of my life that I'll never get back), but I do like the set and lighting in the Oh Love video. If only it had been five minutes and three seconds of the band alone in the warehouse. The song is great and it deserves better.

Is so does 😢 I’m really glad at least Oh Love got an Otis Remix and a different sort of release. I wish it got more. Like to be played on tour and released as a live video for Oakland Coffee Coffeehouse or something. This song needs a rescue mission. It’s too good for what it got (reception wise based on the most common reactions to the video and a few other things).

It is hard for me to believe someone would come out of retirement just to make a video of boobs LOL. To do that he must have really had something he wanted to say. And you make a good point about what people would "expect"--that's why I really feel like an expectation is being taken and played with so that things are not as straightforward as they seem. I will agree though that there is a mismatch of the message of the song and the message of the video. Anyway, will try to shut up now. This whole thing just really has my brain buzzing now LOL. Virginia Lot Lizard
I would love to see Oh Love live and to leave the video buried in history rather than the song and the whole Trilogy. I don’t mind the video but it’s not worth the fuss. It’s not the songs fault. I am so sad none of the Trilogy is represented on any Green Day set lists. I’d say “recent set lists” but it’s been years at this point. It’s gotta mean something. Two albums and a bunch of side projects and even years later and there’s nothing like a discussion about the Trilogy to get fans hyped up and interested in talking about songs, themes, theories and even more. Plus, these songs gotta mean something to someone in the band hence the Otis Remixes.

One of my all time favorite GD songs. The video is amazing too. The motorcycle stuff at the start seems a little random, but the club stuff fits the song's message perfectly. And Billie looks like dessert. ❤️

In my opinion, American Idiot, Holiday, and BOBD are the only really good videos Sam Bayer did with Green Day. Oh Love would have been much better with just the band. @jengd he did say that! I guess he retired again and then came back to make another video because he's a Green Day fanboy.

Sam Bayer did other videos after AI (My Chemical Romance’s Welcome To The Black Parade & Famous Last Words comes to mind), but he did seem to stop after late 2006. I guess something about ¡Uno! must’ve rekindled his desire to direct like American Idiot did. That or the women in the Oh Love video. P.S. He also directed the video for Kill The DJ for those who were unaware.
Popular Post pacejunkie punk
He also directed the first video for Father Of All… the one Billie called chaos at iHeart and that they ended up scrapping. It was the one shot at the Madonna Inn and used all these extras (one of which had tweeted about it at the time and later her tweets were deleted). I would love to see it get leaked someday because it sounds wild. I believe unused footage like this was part of the shoot and why it may have gotten pulled: https://www.instagram.com/p/CUbKhJ4NIDb/?utm_medium=copy_link

Father of All is another departure from the typical Green Day sound like Oh Love was. Maybe they didn’t want backlash for an ill-executed video again to cloud the reception of the song. But I bet it’s a super interesting video to see. Omg I want to see this.
Guest
Well, AI, Holiday, BOBD, and Kill the DJ are all brilliant and deep videos in my opinion. I would have loved to see the original FOAM video since I loved the Madonna Inn photo shoot. The video they went with was kinda chaotic with the found footage, but then I again the song is pretty nihilistic and about acting out in the wake social breakdown, so it does fit. But anyway, maybe now we can say Sam Beyer doesn't suck LOL? And if he is capable of making some pretty deep videos, then he probably had more in mind than just naked women for Oh Love LOL. I agree with @Virginia Lot Lizard that Green Day definitely does still care about these songs to put out the remixes. The Trilogy deserves more respect. If it was as debauched and hedonistic as Oh Love, I have a feeling I would have hated Sam’s FOAM video for their image. I still think that was all wrong and for them to go back and try to revive that sex, drugs and rock and roll vibe from the Trilogy felt like they were regressing not evolving. Glad that whole era is over it was wrong for them in every way.

They were fully leaning into the sex drugs rocknroll stereotype.
Guest
I made my last post before I looked at the Instagram pic. Yes, it if was going to be a video of the band just doing mounds of fake coke LOL, then yeah, maybe that would not be the best especially given Billie's own journey to be healthier. On the flip side, the whole FOAM album and its video address a disillusionment with the current state of society and a sort of nihilistic and hedonistic attempt to escape from it. It's basically Jesus of Suburbia 2.0. So yeah, a certain level of debauchery does fit with that. Again, we are all free to agree or disagree with their choices and not like certain content, but it always just strikes me as weird when people start saying what is or isn't right for the band. They know what they are trying to say and what is right for them. We don't have to agree or like it, but it's their place to make their own art the way they see fit. Also, can I just say how aesthetically beautiful that pic is and how much I love the way Billie looks? Also, can we get more pics of Billie licking stuff? Maybe like the next video just be Billie liking cake frosting, ice cream cones, spoons, beaters, etc.? Also he needs to bring back that cute little earring. ❤️

Popular Post Slave To The Network
@Yosuke Hanamura I forgot about Kill The DJ! That video sucks too! They're just riding motorcycles in a desert and then looking bored in a club. The only good part was Green Day performing (the outfit Billie wore for that was amazing!). I think Sam Bayer needs to give it a rest, especially after learning about that unreleased FOAM video. I'd still like to see it, though. This picture @Rumpelstiltskin2000 posted in the BJA photo thread is too pretty to exist. Billie has the ability to stare across time and space. 5
