Well I still think it's been clear it might be a cover since day one, especially knowing they called the redone Ordinary World a new song too, and a cover is more of a "new song" from GD than that, and knowing they're Chuck Berry fans and have covered him before. So no one should really be surprised if it is :P

Not to mention that he died this past year, so it would be a timely tribute.

Since I’m not familiar with that Chuck Berry song I never would’ve thought about it being a cover if I hadn’t seen it mentioned here, but now I’m obviously preparing myself for the very likely possibility, especially since the two songs are the same length, and I’m no longer going to be surprised about it. But the casual fans? Who knows. Even if it is a cover, they may not even know it and think Green Day wrote the song if it’s not mentioned anywhere ever.

Does anyone remember how their other covers, like the ones that came out during the 21st Century Breakdown era, for example, were advertised?

Why everyone think is gonna be a cover? I don't get it. Even Mike talking about that song described it as intense and energetic...without talking about any cover :) we just have to wait a couple of days. if we are lucky enought only a few hours.

I love how you're defending the possibility that it could be a cover for weeks now @Hermione, and I agree that a cover definitely wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm sure I will still enjoy it and I love all of their covers. A song praising America just isn't exactly the message I was hoping for from the first new Green Day song recorded in a Trump-America. There's really nothing wrong about covering a song and there's nothing wrong about loving your home country and expressing that. It's just that the world is so fucked-up right now that I'm yearning for their critical voice more than ever. Maybe my expectations are too high, but that's just the way I feel.

Yeah there was a discussion about this before, the way I see it Chuck Berry himself wrote that song as a black man in the 1950's so he definitely hadn't only seen the good side of America. It's not praising the government or really saying anything nationalistic, it's about being away from home and appreciating the every day enjoyable things about the place when you come back. Part of being against a shitty government is pointing out the good parts of the country/the people in it and why they should be held on to. I think if GD covered it (since we still don't know if they have or not ) it wouldn't just come off as praising the US full stop, and instead would have a "there's stuff I like about this country so it deserves better" vibe.

The Chuck Berry song is intense and energetic, and it was a bad translation so we don't really know exactly how he answered. But yeah we'll just have to wait and see!

I can't remember but I guess we must've known since I'm pretty sure there was no controversy over it. Since it was a set of four covers and at least two of them were 100% unmistakable as covers from the title (Like A Rolling Stone and A Quick One) it would've been obvious however they announced it in that case.

here's the original interview and he's specifically talking about Back In The USA....https://www.clarin.com/espectaculos/musica/mike-dirnt-green-day-gira-desempleado_0_HkENl5gkM.html

Yeah it does make it sound more like it's not a cover than that it is. But I don't think it's 100% proof that it's not a cover just because he doesn't say it is. The interviewer says "two new songs" and he just goes along with it, he doesn't point out that Ordinary World is just a new version of a song either.

Anyway I'm not, like, rooting for it to be a cover . It might be a new song, just saying I don't think we can be sure either way.

Its an "GREEN DAY GREATEST HITS ALBUM".. why should they put a cover on a greatest hits album of them..

They are bonus tracks, like Maria on IS.

Bonus tracks are just that, bonus tracks. They don’t have to be hits and there’s no requirement that they be original songs, they’re just a little something extra for the fans that already own the hits. It’s something you haven’t heard from them and a reason to buy the album.

but i dont think they would release a slower version of "back in the usa" when mike says "its intense and energetic"

By the way, I like the Green Day version of Outsider better than the Ramones original one. So I won't be disappointed if Back In The USA was a cover, as long as we get the Green Day sound we all love.

Not sure what you mean by this, where did anyone say they would release a slower version of anything?

That could be as simple as a slightly longer guitar solo, not all covers are note for note to the second alike. But I’m like @Hermione I’m not trying to argue it’s a cover I’m just saying we really don’t have the information to know for sure yet so be prepared just in case.

Can I just say I really love the level of debate we can get into over something like this

I’m Team Original Song. I just think we would know by now if it was a cover, somehow. The title might not even feature in the song, and could just serve as a tribute to CB by itself?

Good point and about as valid as any other wild guess right now

One thing we haven’t debated yet is whether we think this is a newly recorded song or a previously unreleased track from the RevRad sessions.  It’s described as new but the Italian Radio post above describes it as unreleased which can be a different thing implying the song already existed and wasn’t recorded recently. Then again it could just be the translation but the truth is whether a cover or an original we also don’t know when they recorded it.

During the RevRad promo time, the band indicated that they only recorded the 11 songs ("Ordinary World" was done separately I think) and released everything they recorded. This could be what they were up to in that Australian studio.
