Fit For An Eleven Year Old?

Hey everyone

I have tickets for the gig in Auckland, New Zealand on 13 May.

My wife and I were supposed to be going, but now my wife can't make it so I am thinking of taking my 11 year old son instead.

I've never been to a GD gig though and I'm a bit concerned some of the material (or language) might not be suitable for him.

Can anyone advise what the current tour stuff is like?

Cheers

ADAM

I suggest that you venture into the tour section and check out the setlist yourself, they keep playing the same stuff so it should give you a pretty clear idea of what to expect. As far as I remember, the most inappropriate song on it is Longview... They do keep KFAD mild this tour if that's a concern .

Yeah there's a few songs with swearing (you can check out setlists for which songs they play, Setlist FM is good for that) but other than a bit of bad language there hasn't been much inappropriateness going on during this tour. No pretend masturbating, mooning, sex noises or anything particularly risque said/done by Billie that I know of. I would say as long as a small number of swear words (most of which you probably wouldn't even notice in the middle of a song) are ok it would be fine for an 11 year old.

I took my son to a GD show when he was too young for the stated admittance but he was older than your son.  We had the conversation that nobody in real life behaves like rock stars do, especially when on stage but Hermione is right, this tour hasn't been as x-rated as previous ones have at times.  I guess you know your son best and how he will react.  I suppose if he already hears the music then he won't be shocked.  My son still says it set the standard for him for live shows, you can take that as either good or bad!

It'll be fine, but always depends on how 'lenient' a parent you are. There's not as much talking between songs and random goofy stories as 21CB but if you're okay with some swearing, go for it.

I don't remember anything too overstated other than the 'fuck you Donald Trump' ending of American Idiot. Looking back at the setlist, it's genuinely really timid language-wise. Other than Youngblood, AI and Longview maybe, the songs are pretty much all radio-friendly.

Don't sweat it, your son will love it. I wish someone had taken me to a rock concert that early!

He will swear a lot when he talks himself into a rage about Trump or the current state of the world during gigs though :D

And sadly, no more stage humping ☹️

I would start with the disclaimer that we're just people on the internet so we aren't in any position to tell you what decisions to make, whatever opinions we offer are subjective, and ultimately what you choose as a parent is your choice.

Now for my personal opinion, I don't think kids are nearly as innocent as we think they are and I really see profanity as a total non-issue. I don't have kids or any interest in having kids, but if I did I would be inclined to explain that cursing, obscene gestures and this sort of stuff is only as appropriate or inappropriate as the setting. Like, I would tell my kid, you can't curse at your teacher, you shouldn't curse at cops, you shouldn't curse in grandma's house, but if you're playing video games in the living room with your friends and wanted to yell "motherfucking shit fuck" when you get quickscoped, I really wouldn't care in the least.

I would go into detail about all the things I did and knew by the time I was 11 (a lot), but I would probably end up scaring you and I don't want that. It's your judgment to use as a parent and whatever you feel is valid.

You know what I always thought would be an awesome thing for a concert? Like a flamethrower the performer rubs up and down like a penis and then it comes fire.

From what I've seen, this tour is much more child-friendly than previous tours. There'll be a bit of swearing in some of the songs and there's usually a "fuck you Donald Trump" in the middle of American Idiot, but not much more than that. I've also seen a load of young kids going to shows on this tour, some of them as young as eight. If you don't mind about the swearing, then it should be okay. :D

Hey I missed one! Yeah it really is pretty all ages friendly right now, as mentioned there's those few songs with the odd swear word but other than that there's really nothing to worry about. Billie has replaced dirtiness with positive/impassioned speeches and good clean silliness.

Rammstein have done rubbing a fake penis and fireworks shooting out. Don't think they've done a flamethrower penis yet but they have done pretty much everything else with flamethrowers and penises on stage. Maybe on their next tour.

That is probably because they're not 30 anymore and roughly 50% of the audience is young enough to be their kids, so I think if they still did that it would be a bit weird :D

I think that's been the make up of their shows for a while, and they were still being pretty dirty until quite recently. I think it's more Billie's positive outlook and impassioned feelings about current events making him more interested in spreading the love and bringing everyone together than showing his bum at shows (although he still finds time for that on Instagram :P)

Oh well, as long as he's happy, I will be able to live without seeing him humping the stage with my own two eyes

Indeed. And there's a better view of that in a video/gif anyway

Have fun! And I hope your kid is going to have a great time at his first gig as well!!!

*obligatory note: hearing protection is a good idea for kids, that would be a concern that I'd have (don't wanna be preachy, but I had some trouble after my first gig and don't want that to happen to other kids :P )

I started listening when I was 5 or 6. The Green Day show is probably the safest place to be in the world tbh.

Sometimes I see all these parents asking if their kids can go to "this" concert or see "that" movie and my parents always were like "ok, let's go!" lol, but I'm glad they did, I've been in concerts since I was just a baby

I went to 3 shows on this current tour and at all of them Billie pulled up kids who were between 10-12 years old on stage to either play guitar, sing or stage dive. They all had a blast of course. Other than the occasional swear word I would definitely say this show is kid/family friendly. Even when he does swear, it isn't in a negative or mean spirited way, it's him saying like "I fucking love you guys" or something like that. The whole message of the show lately has been about living with a positive and open mind, and being inclusive to people of all backgrounds. It's a very uplifting punk rock n roll show. If your son loves rock music he'll have an absolute blast...

Did the "cleaner" shows coincide with Billie's sobriety or did they continue into the 99 Revolutions tour?

I believe the "cleaner" shows coincided with his sobriety. Billie struggled with prescription anxiety meds plus alcohol. Read the side effects of Xanax combined with alcohol. Complete lack of inhibition plus retrograde amnesia (blackouts). In the Rolling Stone interview after his recovery he talked about those issues while using. When you look at the "masturbation on stage" videos, it's hard to imagine how anyone could do that without some liquid/chemical courage.

Sorry this thread has kind of gone astray, lol.
