Her name is Adrienne.  Nickname Adie.  Which when said sounds like 80.  So that's why Billie refers to her as 80.

Also 80 is the number of the highway that goes from Rodeo to Berkeley and Oakland so I assume he couldn't resist the double meaning when he wrote the song ("80").

Well I remember watching some ancient documentary in which someone claimed Billie was leaving Minnesota having falling in love with Adie, was feeling heartbroken and seen a sign for the 80 highway and called her 80. He then got 80 tattooed on him and wrote 80 the song. Might be a good story if it weren't for all the weird contradicting facts we have now like that he was in a relationship with Arica Pelino (who is in Turn It Around The Story of East Bay Punk btw) and following that was in THAT relationship with Amanda and to top it all off denied even having any relationship other than being penpals with Adie until she moved to California! Phew. All this leads to the conclusion that Billie is really in love with beer

No he wrote 80 back in the 90's and it's fine if was drunk then. It is also fine if he was drunk when he got the beer related tattoo (80  ) as it was the 90's. See he's allowed to be constantly drunk from birth until late September 2012. So it's fine to have a songs about beer thread if the songs in question were trilogy era or earlier  Hell these lines from 80 would be perfect should such a thread exist

The 80 nickname specifically comes from the Bay Bridge which the 80 highway runs through. The band have talked about how the sight of the bridge reminded them they were coming home after gruelling tours and Billie of how his dad was a truck driver with the same experience. It's also one of the only sights Oakland is known for. So the number 80 was already special to him and then when he saw the sign/bridge on his way home from Minnesota, he supposedly applied it to her too because it sounded similar. I don't see any reason to disbelieve that or think it's weird

Adie sounds like 80 in an American accent but in other accents not so much . Can be why it's not immediately obvious to people. Didn't know about the bridge thing, that's cool.

The version I heard didn't mention a bridge at all...it was the highway 80. Also beer

The bridge is part of the 80 highway. I know the one you mean, a roadie explained it and he didn't mention the bridge. @Wrong @basketcase4933 may know the source of the bridge explanation.

It wasn't a roadie explaining it, I think it was Billie. Yeah it would make a lot more sense sense if it was already the nickname of the bay bridge!! It would hold specific meaning to the band touring etc and specifically Billie with his dad being a trucker and how much his dad meant to him. It makes more sense than the story I saw which was Adrienne calls herself Adie, I'm sad, I'm on a highway that happens to be 80, 80 rhymes with Adie, oh I'm going to call her 80, I'm going to go tattoo 80 on myself and she'll be forever named after a highway because I'm probably high

Ah yeah Billie probably said it too. The whole thing does make a lot more sense like that though. If I can find the quote I'll post it. I actually remember it being one of the first things I found out about Green Day's history.

Sooo...when he mentions a bridge in this song along with a mention of "2000" which could be a reference to 2000 LYA are we to assume he's singing about 80 the bridge, 80 the beer or 80 the person named after one of the above

Haha, true. It's just he's always using the same ones, they become part of his outfit. Guess it's because it's not yet another Jr. for once, but I had to look twice to realise what was "wrong" with the picture
