I think they just made a vid for it. They already had 5 hit singles on the album. If they were to do another single, there’s no doubt they’d have made it St. Jimmy or Letterbomb.

Back then did the band really have a say in which songs became singles? I feel like I remember them making a comment back in the 90s that it was all up to the label, but that could have changed. If it was up to the band then I'm surprised Letterbomb was never a single, they seem to love that song

Ultimately at the end of the day it’s the labels decision

Seems their love for that song was born way too late, since it has played only on the full AI shows and then forgotten until 2009. But the undisputable setlist spot for that song only becomes a reality in 2010.

Singles are often chosen by the label. Basket Case is the best of examples

I have a question about the official music video for Whatsername which was never released. Did GD initially intend for Whatsername to be a single? Or did they just randomly make a video for it?

I don't think it was even necessarily a completed video. It was some footage that someone on GDC found somehow that didn't even have sound on it. Then some other random person put it on youtube with the song added and called it an "official video". I guess maybe they considered doing it and shot some stuff for it but ended up changing their mind.

Why in the American idiot lyrics book it's written 'alienation'. I've always thought it's 'alien nation', or the 'n' is common for both? :P

I think it's word play, "all across the alienation" as in all across the nation where people feel alienated.

Was the band reluctant to make it a single ?

Kind of like the FN video :(

Thanks, then again I love "the subliminal mind fuck America". It may be interpreted as "the subliminal mind (and) fuck America" or "the subliminal mindfuck - America" :P

I love that too, love wordplay like that in lyrics.

Basket Case? Not sure if all of the band was, but I know that Billie said he hadn't even considered it specifically a single or even potentially popular, but that they were told by managers that is was hugely popular among their audiences at live-shows. I don't think they were necessarily reluctant to make it a single, rather at first they didn't even consider it single material, until they realized how popular it was. I could be wrong though...

Ok thanks for your reply, I guess that makes sense :) Speaking about Basket Case, the release date confuses me. I've always heard it was the third single after Longview and WTP and I'm pretty sure Wiki mentionned it was released in November 1994. However, during the MTV VMA 1994 (which took place in September) Billie Joe speaks about making videos as if the band already made more than one, and now Wiki says the release date is actually August 1994. Does anyone know any better ?

The band was told that they had to start playing it live because it was going to be their next single. They didn’t really want to because it was hard to play :P But the music video was filmed in April ‘94, so it was definitely the third single. When I Come Around came out in late ‘94, and She came out in early ‘95 I believe.

No, but BJ didn't see it as a single at the time. He even though that it would be a deep cut of the record. "Too personal" I recall.

Even so, the band didn't even bother to play it during the first half of 1994. Only when the video was released and it got heavy rotation on mtv, the band started to perform it.

But then, Wiki is wrong (again) when it says Welcome to Paradise was released in October 1994 ? :P

Is it true that Billie donated a large sum to Food Not Bombs?

According to this wiki page (under the "Charity events and songs" section), apparently so.

All of the charitable work that Green Day has done really reveals an entire different side of the punk rockers out of Berkeley. It's nice to think about how Green Day contributes to the bigger picture. Just a thought

Yes. Their May 1995 shows were FNB benefits. There are two interviews with Jeff Ott where he talks about setting Billie up with FNB.

Hm, I wonder how much the downloads of BOBD amounted to?  Have never been able to find out, anyone know or have an idea how to find the figure?

I read that Billie has only ever written 3 songs for Pinhead Gunpowder (27, New Blood and Anniversary Song) so can anyone confirm or deny this?

Yeah, that’s right. Billie also co-wrote the song “A.P.H.M.” with Aaron, but Aaron made it a Shotwell Coho song instead of keeping it for Pinhead Gunpowder.

A long time ago I  read a poem that Billie wrote around American Idiot time. it said " and that was that or so it seems//is this the end or the beginning//all I know is she was right//I am an idiot". If anyone knows where that's from or has a scan please post it I thought it was really cool.

Weren’t those lines used in the musical? I seem to remember John Gallagher saying them.
