Also the game has a 12 rating. On the songs that are on there cutting swear words was enough to keep it at that but it would be pretty hard to make All By Myself age 12 friendly.

But they included Geek Stink Breath, which is more explicitly drugsy than all by myself is masturbationy (and I’d argue that drugs are worse).  I guess you could say GSB is a cautionary tale? :P

So is ABM if you’ve heard the backstory

Again unless you listen carefully and are aware of the drug terms you're not going to realise what it's about. You can barely hear what Billie says and even reading it most kids aren't going to pick up on the meaning very clearly as a lot of it is abstract. I'd listen to Longview or Geek Stink Breath in front of my nephew because they just sound like cool songs and it's unlikely he'll study the lyrics and ask what every word and phrase (most of which aren't directly about drugs or masturbation on their own anyway) means. I wouldn't listen to All By Myself in front of him because it's clearly a guy straight up being a pervy creep breathing heavily and salivating

Is that now considered the actual backstory? It's an old gross joke that he decided to make the "backstory" on the spot so if it is he was impressively convincing

Green Day have a lot of songs about touchy subjects that made it into Green Day Rock Band, another example is Having A Blast which is about a suicide bomber but i don't get what any of this has to do with the original question.

I'm going to regret asking this but what's the alleged ABM backstory?

Watch the Wrigley Field interview for the full story.  True or not, it’s hilarious.

I could summarize it but it’s worth hearing the way Tre tells it 😄

Well that was quite something and I'm going to choose to believe it as fact

Was it really recorded at a party though?!

Because All By Myself is pretty much a skit and barely a song, hence why it probably wasn't included in the game. Also think about the practicalities of playing a game, the song's just two notes repeated that then move up a few tones for the chorus - not the most fun to play on a game like RockBand.

Tim is much more well informed than me but that seems crazy for it to be recorded at a party - it sounds too clean to me!

I could be mistaken but pretty sure I read it was at a party I’ll have to go digging in my magazine storage sometime this week

Why wouldn't you call it a song, it's sung and has guitar accompaniment, it's easily the worst track off Dookie but i'd still consider it a song. It would really suck to play on Rock Band though, you're right about that.

Because it's so short, is essentially a joke and has one instrument. Whilst it's technically a song very few people would take it as a serious part of Green Day's discography- it's just a jokey thing.

It is hilarious (especially the way he told it) but it's also an old joke that he didn't make up himself :P. It also doesn't even match with what's described in the song :P. He deserves no more credit for it than he does for the no man can eat 50 eggs thing :P

The egg thing has always conflicted me so much because most gd fans seem to think Tre invented it and I don't want to rain on anybody's parade but at the same time I'm like "sick movie reference, amirite???"

Where else was it mentioned?  The Wrigley interview was the first time I saw it.

I've heard the joke (ie someone masturbating in their room with their eyes closed and headphones on or whatever so they can't see or hear, then opening their eyes and seeing their mum's come in and left dinner for them) several times before. Can't think of an example of where but it's definitely not a Tre original, I think it's kind of an urban legend like "this happened to my friend".

Ricky Gervais definitely did about that years ago, but yeah, that joke's been round the block a few times for sure.

Doesn't look like Rob Cavallo to me. I'm sure I read somewhere it was just a friend of the photographer but I can't even remember who that was now.
